Are there many other women on here/playing Elite: Dangerous?

As an experiment, I once created a character with an obviously female name and avatar on another online game and played it on and off for a few months. I'd recommend that every male gamer does it because it really opens your eyes to what it must be like to be female and a gamer and honestly, I wouldn't want that to be a regular feature of my life.
CMDR Jenny Diver experienced this. I started her as a PvP CMDR but quickly decided to switch her over to exploration. The direct chats I was receiving were really creepy and inappropriate, and it made me feel very uncomfortable despite being a guy "behind the mask". Thankfully my wife rarely experiences this in RDO. Weird to think that RDO is "safer" than ED in this regards...

Yeah that was exactly my experience. There's pretty much nothing someone can say to me in chat in a game that will actually shock me, I've had death threats, sincere wishes that I get cancer, that my parents get cancer, that I die in a fire and God knows what else, usually after I've despatched the person concerned in an amusing or stylish manner and honestly it's just words on a screen to me, I can't even begin to care what some butthurt clown thinks.

Some of the stuff I got on that account though, it really makes you look at humanity in a different way because one thing I've never had on any game account anywhere that seems to be male, cis or otherwise, is abuse or indecency purely on the basis that I was a bloke, with no other context to it. I'm sure it does differ from game to game but this was about five or six years ago and I found myself thinking 'is this really where we're at almost two decades into the 21st century?'

Just a plain old human male of north european descent. Though, today, I do identify as a Krait Phantom. Tomorrow I may be a Cutter, unless I am feeling like a Corvette. My daughter plays. So that is at least one person that plays Elite Dangerous that I am sure is female. The rest of you are ships to me. We are all just ships in this game when it comes down to it.
I heard we were all just dust in the wind. 🌬

If there are, they are smart to hide the fact from the stupid little boys who populate most of the gaming world.
The reason I am "Old Duck" is because while a little boy at heart, I did not want actual little boys and girls, which make up the bulk of PS4 gamers, mistaking me as one of them. You hear these stories of older men pretending to be young kids for nefarious purposes, so I wanted to make it blatantly obvious to everyone that I'm an "old fella" who is just here to play games, not make friends with a bunch of obscenity-screaming 12 year olds (the main reason I turn off chat on PS4).

And then I joined the ranks of Elite Dangerous, where I'm closer to a "Spring Chicken" than an "Old Duck", relatively speaking. \O/

EDIT - never mind, arguing with you just isn't worth it.
I hope in the future you will stop to reflect on how other people may interpret things different from yourself.

I am sure you are used to getting away with arguments similar to the ones you have presented in this thread without being called out on them, but having a ”gamer wife” in no way entitles you to speak for all female gamers. I do not pretend to do that either, I am merely pointing out that the mannerism displayed in this thread can easily be described as toxic to many - even if your wife does not find it so.

People who find toxicity everywhere are specifically looking for it everywhere. And considering todays safe space needing crayon munchers consider everything that they don't like to be toxic simply by point of it existing, I consider the source.

...That you find it funny does not mean that everybody will and to many this behavior will be toxic and drive them away. Particularly people that are in a minority to begin with...
...That you have thick skin does not mean that the OP has. I see similar problems myself all the time in my generally male-dominated profession. That there are some women does not mean that there is no underlying issue...

Wow the thinly veiled transphobia in this thread is pretty horrible....

Cmdr's - your S̶J̶W̶ ideology is showing...and i believe Politics is against the rules...shhhhh!
I'm kind of restraining myself from sinking to your level here....So....

On topic -
I'm a dude - but i have bought copies of Elite for various female friends and family. (The more the merrier!)
...Does it really matter though? We're all "commanders" in this galaxy, regardless of gender...
This.
