It probably doesn't help if those new players are reading spectrum or reddit and seeing criticism being countered with "its alpha, we're testers not players" and "maybe alpha isn't for you". Those new players might start asking themselves whether alpha is for them as well.
It's also dependent on the context.
Go and point out the completely broken everything (game engine, networking, gameplay...) especially on the cultist subreddit and they'll immediately shout "ITS AN ALPHA !!1!1!11" and "YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND GAME DEVELOPMENT".
On the other side, in the PU, if i point out in the chat that it's only an alpha / technical demo, i'll have a dozen white knights shouting me off that "ITS A GAME ! CIG TELL US SO, THEREFORE IT MUST BE TRUE !!!!!111!!" (barely paraphrasing here..) .
Havent launched 3.9 yet, motivation to do so is low...

seems to be doing pretty well

I realise that it is quite sad for those waiting for the fixes to arrive and I realise that this has been going on for ages, but I admit that I chuckled when I read that - it just has a slapstick comedy feel to it.
Unless you're playing, just woke up back where you started from and have just lost 400k aUEC in cargo since your ship only respawns empty. Between the 30k errors and dodgy game physics, trying to earn some credits through cargo running has almost turned me into a virtual pauper begging for fuel money at Levski :cautious:

So much for long term persistence where you can keep what you earn...or lose in most cases. I'm beginning to wish they'd wipe every patch just so at some point I have some credits to start with. I was better off when they did wipe...

A number of big streamers like Lirik greatly boosted the numbers on Twitch. Lirik averages 20K - 35K for each broadcast. There's no way these guys keep playing the game, given the state it is in.

My mum always said you should wipe after taking a dump, and CIG's patches seem to be massive dumps.

We should ask the totally independent and legit games journalists over at the very insightful and upstanding pixelemonade.com that was definitely not a total copy-paste fabrication registered to the online reputation management firm they definitely had not hired on retainer at the time…

Nevermind the totally organic community grown around Rexzilla streaming.

liriks been playing since 2017 iirc and eventho 3.9 has lots of bugs its a lot better then whatever hellspawned patch we had back then

liriks been playing since 2017...
No. He's tried it twice in the last few days. Before then it was six months ago when he last tried (check his VODs). And he knows full well what he's doing. He's not "playing" Star Citizen, like you tried to imply here. He's faffing about, making jokes and enjoying the resulting hilarity in chat.

With 3.9, other larger streamers such as uhSnow, Timmac and Nmplol have also been trying it. This has really goosed the numbers because these guys get far more viewers than the typical 100 - 500 viewers that SaltEMike, Captain Richard, etc. get. I sense a marketing push from CIG.

I hear that the big streamers like Lirik can make a decent wedge of cash by selling their live playtime.
Sponsorships

If subscriptions are the cake, sponsorships are the icing.
For sponsorships, companies pay streamers to promote their brand. The most visible one is to pay streamers to play their games (sponsored streams). Reportedly, Electronic Arts paid Ninja a million bucks to play Apex Legends. EA did this with Battlefield V too. The easiest way to tell this is happening is that you'll start seeing #ad appearing in stream titles, to comply with FTC guidelines.
The rate streamers get paid for sponsored streams ranges from 1¢ to $1 per viewer per hour. If you get 10,000 viewers, that's $1,000 to $10,000 per hour of gameplay.
You will also see streamers being sponsored by companies that make gaming equipment, from headsets to chairs to keyboards. Each individually negotiated and that information isn't made public by anyone.
There are some sponsorship networks (google them to find out more) out there which will connect brands with “influencers” too – so that's a way forward once you get your channel up.
