Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

From what I can gather just noting what's being said amongst the faithful, ToW will probably be quite popular...assuming it works right.

Yeah but thats the thing with Star Citizen from day 1 of development. This game will be GREAT once its done and works right. Current observations and verdicts are swept under the rug, ignored or attacked because "its alpha" and "it ll be great once it works". Star Citizen as a whole started out as a promise of potential that could make it a game of unrivaled size and complexity. The resources were there. The talent was there. Things were looking good for Star Citizen simply because what they wanted to do didnt seem impossible, was funded well enough und relied mostly on the dev teams approach so people waited and held their breath for Star Citizens first iterations that would verify or muddy the stakes.

The rest is history and well documented.

Its just sad to see that people dont learn from past mistakes. Trust is usually earned and based on a number of previous occurances that support or enhance someones take on something. Your own statement "ToW will be quite popular...assuming it works right" settles into the long list of other comments (from other people) who make similar statements about Star Marine or various other areas of the project. And at the best of times there is always a glimpse of potential that allows people to dream, to look past red flags and worries and bask in the glory of the vision. These glimpses take the form of advertising videos, orchestrated footage, nice screenshots or simply shilling. Anything to enforce someones careful interest, to harden convictions that all it takes is a little more time and patience and things will work out.

Criticism and warnings that exist in other games and which are taken in as facts are categorically supressed, denied or attacked because they present an exestential threat to the project. Not because they are criticism at large but because some of the most probably worries and red flags indicate that Star Citizen is impossible to make and thus represent a direct couter to its claim....all the while CIG being uinable to provide evidence or proof to lay these worries to rest.

Star Citizen is a series of promises, each one seperately heavily funded und supported and so far CIG has demonstrated that old promises change or are neglected, sometimes even dropped or ignored for new goals on the horizon. Justifications are many and readily available but all of them are as theoretical or opinionated as the criticism involved. Showing a good looking screenshot and stating "SC is great" doesnt have any kind of connection or reliance on each other. The only real statement supporting SCs quality as a game is the notorious "its fun for ME" which is as useless as it gets.

Visual presentation is a disconnected quality which might add to a games quality but is not responsible for it. There are enough pixel games out there who are deemed great games as well as many great looking games who are deemed mediocre or even bad. Its strange that so many people seem to be unable to understand the relationship and get fluffed so easily by eye candy in SCs case. But then we also know why that is.

Investment.

Which plays a huge role in Star Citizens development as well as the backer behavior. Concierge clubs, several tiers deep. Most of the current gameplay experiences tied to additional purchases outside the regular basic package. At some point people act in defense of their past actions because admitting that Star Citizen isnt all that great would at the same time mean all the money and time invested so far is also moot. And its always easier to blame others or look elsewhere for fault and reasons then yourself.

So many pro defenders are heavily invested. They might call it different but being concierge means you are heavily invested. That alone is ample explanation for the over-the-top replies, toxicity and fanatical responses. They got something to lose in all this. And the "bah...when it fails it fails" is at best bravado and machismo because even with that knowledge it ll hurt and many people I observe simply lack the capacity for acknowledgement....rather arguing the "real " start of development and similar innane things instead.

So what about all the fresh blood which cannot be heavily invested, neither financially nor empathically? At first I thought the reports of newcomers must ve been faked but according to more trustworthy sources this is really the case so why are many of them so deep in all of a sudden? Its easy to dismiss but by doing that I would make the same mistake as the people who immeduately disregard me as a hater regardless what I have to say.

So more hours spent on live streams watching, observing, trying to find the quality people cling to and bring up in SCs defense.

And I cant see it. Oh I see the potential glimpse that promises so many wonderful things but I also know so much more now that renders developer statements and Chris Roberts promises void, especially considering how vague and careful they usually are spoken. The hard facts are timelines, roadmaps or rather the missing things of past roadmaps and watching how past statements become remodelled and reinvented to allow for another delay. One factor I can spot is that Star Citizens "trench war" is a really old phenomena by now. Positions are enforced and constantly confirmed via different interpretations. The same thing happening to all can be good or bad for Star Citizen depending on how you chose to read it. Depending on which side of the skirmish you first have contact with might also decide about your faction in this thing. Buy-in from the get go and laugh and play along other SC-favorable people might lead to you defending the project even against valid criticism because you feel threatened (and often are called a fanatic as well). But if you start out doubtful and ask hard questions, chances are you ll be thrown into the ranks of the disbelievers, haters and contact soon becomes a personal matter. Changing first impressions under these circumstances is a hard thing to do. It requires mental maturity and also integrity to admit you were wrong. And lets just say that these qualities seem to be a rare thing among the "chosen". Giving up on SC is easier to do then changing your tune from the opposite side. Because the things SC reliably excells in is delays, underperformance and overcharging.

When the question "what does it take for you to give up on Star Citizen" is asked.....the reply usually is so evasive that a correction in case of the thing you state coming true is an easy thing allowing you to keep going. And if everything fails there is always the "I dont have to justify myself or my actions to you" retort. Which is true....but why participate in discussion in the first place then?

I ve been away for a few days due to a move and havent had access to internet. So I m a bit surprised at the amount of news on this topic but, picture my surprise....its all news from the hater camp pointing and laughing at the joke which is Star Citizen. My posting here has become infrequent and theres good reason for it. I ve grown tired of this. The endless ongoing "promise" to finally see progress after the next stop, the next hill, the next patch. And it never is. Maybe I can give up quicker on this then others due to my non-investment but I usually came back to check in on stuff. Doing so means to sample other games which release in the meantime (or finally break into my steam backlog) and it helps to put Star Citizen and what it actually does in perspective. Finished games who blow Star Citizen out of the water in any given department. Graphics, complexity, content, groundbreaking innovations.

Those games deliver and SC only promises it will one day.

Star Citizens promise also is from 2012 or is for the most part. A lot of it has been updated to stay current and compete with current titles but by doing so the dream has turned from potential into full-blown vision. Impossibly far away and so hard to accomplish that it rivals a wonder at this point. One factor in this is Chris Roberts who (if he doesnt run an active scam knowingly) cannot admit that some things are beyond his grasp. He refuses to admit defeat or allow for diminishment in scope but rather asks for more time, more money and more patience to make the dream a reality.

Children who cannot admit defeat are nothing rare. Even adults who act like kids arent. But usually life is breaking the childish behavior swiftly and brutally. Either its the parents who put a stop to the charade or its real-life obligations (usually money and the like). But here we have Star Citizen...a community of people who chose to dream over common sense and reality and who are also willing to pay for that illusion.

I dont know how many million people run after their dreams and the ones who manage to catch it are great examples for all kinds of good human qualities. But its easy to forget or miss all the people who never had a chance or failed in the first place. Its like lottery for you. Every week or almost every week there is that one person who gets it. But for him to get his money millions of others are requried to fail......right?

How long will it take for people to accept that Star Citizen and Chris Roberts are (and where from the start) in the pool of failures? Its golden moment was when it bought the lottery tickets and it held 50 in its hand compared to the one others have. And still it never won anything.

People might get "tired" of the constant SC bashing as they call it....the screaming for scam and deceit but it doesnt change the facts. And getting tired of something usually means you stop doing it....not continue what you do which allows the thing in the first place and just mute the aspects you dont like.

Come to think of it, have they ever managed to squeeze out any semblance of a logical argument why spoilers would even be a factor in their chronic incapability to create something as trivial and development-critical as a roadmap?

No they rather depend on peoples mental jump to justify its relevance because its quite obvious in regards to story telling. Why would they tell you the ending first? SQ42s story isnt important in all this tho. They could perfectly well report on SQ42 as progress or even aspects of its story without giving the surprise away. Or rather....competent people could. With the "spoiler" excuse coming up carte blanche for every possible aspect of SQ42 is simply reeks like a lame excuse to cloak its non-existence. And they probably cannot share what they have now because it would be testimony to the raw state and the projects non-existence at times where it was heavily advertised or reported as "played through".

I don't get why they have to be leaks in the first place. Its almost as though CIG are embarrased for their pre-pre-alpha versions to be publicly shown. I mean, they let people show off their regular pre-alpha stuff once it goes to PU.

Its propaganda in a nutshell. Star Citizens videos are not meant to report or demonstrate progress or the actual current state but are used as a tool to advertise the honey source and catch more flies. Pre-alpha footage is freely shared and spread as lonmg as it looks good or works okayish because it allows to push the narrative. Experimental code is kept under NDA until the worst offenders screaming "GLITCHY" are sorted out. The fact that most PTU stuff still breaks the PU even after revision only speaks of the teams competence in this regard. If it would be up to Chris Robert we would only see stuff after its final polishing phase and not before. Only then we wouldnt ever see something out of this so he goes for the middle path. Half-finished buggy alpha stuff but polished to insane levels so everybody can be happy.

Yet again, they deliver. You gotta admit that they put out good entertainment. I think they're modern clowns. Back then the circus clown would find themselves humiliated and embarrassed. They are doing basically the same. It's an art.

You are not wrong. While its becomes less and less probable that Star Citizen ever turns into a reality and failure is much more probable then success the amount of pure entertainment not linked to gameplay is through the roof. I never played Star Citizen, I dont even plan to ever play it even if it releases and yet....this thread and the topic itself has been the source of much entertainment. Its mostly through drama but it allows insights into addiction and fanaticism same as basic human behavior patterns. I find it a lot more entertaining then watching any given sport to be honest.

I'm dreading it...I think I'll go back to playing cowboys for the week.

My go-to will be Division 2 and Endless Space, depending on the internet quality

and not trying to push a narrative or communicate a message. I just find it funny cuz we all know those statements so well ^^

edit: had to hunt down the image because the reddit one was deleted. I had no idea there was a meme-line on this :) available for all kinds of SC topics ^^ just do a google search for "Star Citizen bingo"

Skins
For Fleet Week, you’ll find a bevy of skins available on the pledge store, and we’re happy to share you’ll also be able to purchase them in-game for aUEC in an upcoming patch. In time, we’ll continue to roll out new skins, and it’s worth noting that in the future we plan on making a variety of exclusive skins that are only earnable in-game for aUEC. This is important to us because it gives pilots out there making their living among the stars the opportunity to show off their hard-earned work. In regard to pricing, skins that can be pledged for with real money outside of the game will be based on a percentage of the ship’s hull cost, but are subject to a plateau to avoid large ships from having skins that are overpriced.

That's a crud way of phrasing it :D
Worse still, it's been so long and it has taken so many mind-bogglingly stupid turns that I've now forgotten what even was the origin of that excuse. :(

I think I had something to do with temporary ownership or loaners or something — that they couldn't just “borrow” stuff because this would apparently clog up the DB with ownership references somehow. But that might have been something completely different.

That's exactly the "spoiler" they're desperate to avoid.

Ah the digital paint scam. And priced proportionally to the ship's hull too. If ED is any indication of player's spending habits, SC has just ensured itself another 10 years of funding what with rare/limited edition paint jobs.

Well, people will be able to earn them in game "in a future patch"

So, a few years of milking people for money first.

No SQ42 news today:
*UPDATE: We ran into some editorial issues with the SQ42 update video so won’t have this out today. Cue the jokes about delay – we know! We’ll get this one out soon. Thanks for your patience!

There will be a fee on downgrades. Basically, it's necessary to reduce the abuse of the system: people switching willy nilly between whatever ships they want to fly on this day and causing unnecessary database schmeg.
Schmeg. It's what's unnecessary for databases.
I couldn't think of the right word here.

Ahhh - near half a decade ago :D

How dare people switch between jpegs they purchased - foulest abomination!

Please - consider the database, and it's wants and needs. It just wants to feel special - just like you do. Consider adding a like and subscribe to it's channel - and if you'd smash that bell button and purchase tat from our store (Buy an Idris!) - we'll give you an exclusive code off a discount possibility loot box token from our wonderful sponsor! Big Benny's Noodle Hazmat Suits!

Incoming patch with the Cutlass Blue
