Why did you stop playing Elite?

Is that ESO ? Tried that too but the multitude of players running/jumping around everywhere with exotic pets in tow spoiled the experience a bit for me, like being locked in a childrens playground :)

Stopped playing Elite for all the usual reasons a few years back, but came back now to see what happens here, good to see the community still active.

Seems it has become easier to make money, or is that just me ?

Also Thargoid war is over - did we win ?

This is still a fun flying game when it's been a while.

No, it's Skyrim. The much, much better version of ESO, where there's absolutely zero chance you will ever see other players jumping around everywhere with exotic pets in tow.

You know, not only phrasing it like that, but the actual presentation in-game is in direct contradiction of "a cutthroat galaxy" and the lore.

Well, if you read the books or pay attention to the general presentation of audio logs in game, it is not showing a relaxing picture of the game world. Fuel scooping for instance is described to be really dangerous.

If it's not in the game it doesn't exits is my take. When did they add audio logs?

At some point all gamers have to choose between continuing to play an existing game, or moving on to something new.

While I had an absolute blast playing Elite for years, ranking up to double Elite on XBOX and then PC, I stopped playing because I didn't want to grind for 5-6 billion credits to be able to access the new 2020 content (FCs).

So I chose to play other games over grinding, and my friends and I are really enjoying Space Engineers - so much so we've rented our own Dedicated Server for $20/mo.

That said, I can't wait for the New Era which I'm sure will bring me back for awhile ;-)

The sad thing about this is they removed a feature after people bought the product. Imagine buying a car with a CD player, only to have the dealer come to your house a year later and replace it with a USB MP3 player without your permission. Sure, the latter may be better, but if you've invested in a collection of CDs, you're going to be pretty ticked off! And "better" is relative, since CD quality is actually better than lossy MP3.

Of course nobody actually buys ED, we just pay for the privilege to use whatever software Frontier wants to give us, or taketh away from us. #EULA

I would add a 3rd: experience in making a coherent, balanced, logical, inter-connected game world.

ED plays and feels too much like FD's park games, there's a lot of distinct, independent enclosures you can use to try particular rides and do not affect other encloseres, and each have it's own particular rules that may and regularly do contradict the rules of the other rides. And when the music stops and the particular ride is finished, all is reset to start again. Which is quite fine, for theme park games.

Yes, I agree. Was thinking about the instanced world, too. It's all kinda chopped up. You move your bit like on a big map and then you get some action. In principle it is like Total War - without the strategic layer except for moving about the bigger distances and picking the next place of interest.

But world building is hard. Bioware has tried multiple times now to make open worlds - they come up with ever growing levels rather than a world. ED tries with procedural content for activities. Which kinda works, but more on the activity side - there is only so much world building you can do procedurally. Dwarf Fortress is imo still leading in procedural world creation and that is not really perfect either.

Imo, the world size is ED's biggest hindrance. The really good open worlds are still limited in size and usually done by Bethesda - you'll never know with what nonsense they come up next with but that part was always reliably solid design.

Well, I see the FSS is the reason for many players who've stopped playing. I'm not too surprised but it's still sad to see it.

The old way is gone. The God Honk which was the ADS now doesn't do anything really, you need to honk to start the FSS but that's really all it does now. In order to even be able to tell if a system is worth exploring you need to actually explore it first with the FSS, completely. Only then can you actually tell if a system is interesting or not, whereas with the ADS all you needed to do was HONK and you could then make a quick educated decision on whether to stay and explore or jump out to the next system.

You need to do the entire FSS dance and grind just to tell if a system is interesting. And therein lies the problem.

The FSS itself isn't a bad concept. The old Honk was far too simplistic and boring, expanding exploration into more user involvement was a great decision. The problem is the way in which FDev did it. There have been hundreds of suggestions on how to improve exploration over the years, many of which were really great concepts. The key mechanics of the FSS take a lot of those suggestions into account actually. THE PROBLEM IS THIS: FDev made us do almost all of the exploring up front via a minigame which takes us away from flying the ship and forces us heads down into a blue blobby mess, and the only way to get info on the system is to complete this miningame. EVERY. FRACKING. TIME. WE. JUMP. INTO. A. SYSTEM.

In my opinion FDev should have broken exploring down into a system of stages we could do from the cockpit seat rather than put it all into the FSS minigame. It's too late now, we got what they did and we are stuck with it.
