ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

If they roll atmospheric planets and graphic improvements generally into Horizons and leave Odyssey to be a pure FPS expansion, this might not be a disaster.

Also, if wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

The way I read it, both are Odyssey only; though so far atmo planets just look like regular planets but with a blue sky, so I'm not too hurt about that. The graphical improvements may also be Odyssey only, which I've seen other games do with their expansions.

Right now it really looks like Odyssey is neatly packed up as it's own little thing. Though hopefully Tim can expand a bit more on that for us to confirm/deny it.

No VR support kinda kills the incentive to get the expansion for me. On top of that, if Gamestar is right and we won't even get station and ship interiors, I am now pretty sure this isn't for me.
Well, as long as I can still play Horizons in VR like before, it'll just be like no update happened I guess.

Despite my peeves with some aspects of Elite I always gave it credit that it has been in the VR front lines, contributing to making that mainstream push happen, and honestly it's been doing an excellent job at it. There are certainly features in ED I think can only be described as poor game design, but the flight model combined with VR has always been absolute best in class. Now here's news of a major update with VR support dropped. Well there goes the VR poster boy position ("oh yeah it's in the last year's model, go check it out there"), and a bunch of players just joined the pre-Horizons players in the "am I a second class citizen?" population.

Wow.

With the September update dumpster fire, the chaos-driven-design of Fleet Carriers late minute balancing, with everything I have been witnessing since I started playing ED, I really really figured you could only go up from here. Well it already looks like a shaky start for Odyssey. "At launch" doesn't exactly fill me with any hope of seeing VR support in a future update. Past behavior as a predictor of future behavior and all that.

I guess I've learned to enjoy Elite as it is, despite my certain grievances with it. Hell, if something, I appear to be rather passionate about the game and I wish it success. So I guess... yeah. I'll probably be purchasing Odyssey. Because, you know, you already failed the whole PSVR thing and I'm used to playing it pancake on PS4. Definitely mothballing the PC CMDR though. I gotta say, at least you're consistent in something, I'm just not sure what you're consistent in is anything to be proud of.

I just can't for the life of me figure out how, for every non-trivial change you make, you manage to shoot yourselves in the foot in the process.

If any of the CM's are still reading I have a genuine question ...

Will people in VR still be able to fly space ships around beneath a blue sky?

In other words, at what point is VR not supported? Is it when you enter glide for an atmospheric world, when you transition to "legs", or when you launch an "Odyssey" version of Elite?

People pushing for VR support in Odyssey - careful what you wish for.
I mean if you push it hard enough, VR might come with Odyssey at launch... but in early 2022 🙃
So you are offering me a hypothetical choice of a game I don't want to play VSa game I DO want to play but delayed

.......... IF FD said VR not at launch but as soon as it lands we will be putting our efforts.into VR support I would be fine with that but that does not sound like the case here

Walking around Stations/Ships has been asked for, for Years!!! An even Teased in the Krait Trailer.... So why isn´t FDEV speaking about it???? This is an unnecessary cat and mouse game!

no vr... why are you breaking your community like this?...it's a no buy for me... and i will not be able to play with most of my friends anymore.
2 dev of hello games figures how to implement it in one year and you in 3 years with 120 people did nothing

rofl My god man... when was the last time you played VR? The oculus dev kit 1? Walking/locomotion based VR experiences have come a LONG way since then. I haven't seen an experience like what you described since 2017. Moving around in VR games now is as smooth, if not moreso, than KB+M. Hell, look at HL Alyx. Even simpler games like Rec Room- people literally play VR sports games like paintball with ease. The top VR games are all non-seated experiences.

VR has come a long, long way. Half Life Alyx is exceptional. Boneworks, Asgard's Wrath, Lone Echo and many others all show just how good VR now is. In a lot of regards, locomotion has been solved - or at least is on the road to being solved.

However. Locomotion in VR is very different to that with a mouse and keyboard. Half Life Alyx for example would be a very different game with mouse and keyboard (and yes, I'm aware of the mod). For Odyssey to support walking around in VR and on-screen would essentially mean two different games that need to be fully balanced with each other.

I wouldn't be surprised if VR for Odyssey never happens. There's a lot of problems to solve.

Well, as long as I can still play Horizons in VR like before, it'll just be like no update happened I guess.

So at this point I'm just fantasizing about what I'd like to see, but the Odyssey page says this:

Take on a wide variety of contracts and play your way, from diplomacy and commerce to lethal stealth and all-out combat.

How cool would it be if I, as a full time ship pilot who doesn't get his hands dirty with ground pounding, could hire players to do stuff for me on the ground to help me out? Like get me supplies or something only specific to Odyssey fps gameplay?

I know that historically FDev has had some kind of crippling fear of cooperative play with players, trying to limit it as much as possible by not letting us pay each other or trade with each other, but the word "contract" really makes me excited for the possibility that the game might actually start trying to be a real multiplayer experience. If that's the case, I'd get Odyssey and just sit there making contracts all day.

Fight for me, my little FPS soldiers!

Oh, another thing I realized:

Base building being denied from ever happening proves all the people wrong who said Fleet Carriers would become "so much better intergrated" through base building in the next era update. And people wonder why their optimistic views are unpopular.

nah, the only truly great part of the game is killing goids and that is in Horizons. I dont want the FPS stuff and already dislaike going to planets so I'm good. VR is still gonna be supproted in Horizons so I've got my goids. FDEV wont get our money for Odyssey but i'll spend that much on ARX probably so win win really

Hm. Wait until the storyline continues and Thargoids require walking on foot at some point. Or live on planets with ammonia atmospheres. You'll be locked out, just as you could never visit one of the Thargoid sites or the Guardian stuff if you only had the base game. Thargoids with base game only suck. And so it will be. There is no escape :)

O7,
🙃
