ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

VR has come a long, long way. Half Life Alyx is exceptional. Boneworks, Asgard's Wrath, Lone Echo and many others all show just how good VR now is. In a lot of regards, locomotion has been solved - or at least is on the road to being solved.

However. Locomotion in VR is very different to that with a mouse and keyboard. Half Life Alyx for example would be a very different game with mouse and keyboard (and yes, I'm aware of the mod). For Odyssey to support walking around in VR and on-screen would essentially mean two different games that need to be fully balanced with each other.

I wouldn't be surprised if VR for Odyssey never happens. There's a lot of problems to solve.
Well that´s sort of their job?! I mean what else would all the money we gave them be good for?

So you are offering me a hypothetical choice of a game I don't want to play VSa game I DO want to play but delayed

.......... IF FD said VR not at launch but as soon as it lands we will be putting our efforts.into VR support I would be fine with that but that does not sound like the case here

Yeah, If VR support gets introduced down the line we'd buy for sure. But the content we really like (thargoids) is all in Horizons so no need for Odyssey for us. I have to admit I'm just happy we can keep doing what we do in VR. I think i've already just accepted Odyssey wont be for us and you know what, I dont even mind that much

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.
As a VR only player that was asking for clarification, I am happy to see some feedback. However, this still opens a ton of questions that are of high importance to myself and I imagine most others like me who are playing in VR only. Modt pressing of those issues are the questions about whether or not we can expect to be playing the base game and Horizons on an equal footing to those playing Odessey. In particular, game breaking features would include:
  • Significant advantages for Odessey players over non-Odessey players due to new content (like engineers meaning non-Horizon players are disadvantaged in the base game)
  • Other competitive advantages such as superior ways of affecting BGS or poserplay

Another important question regards the gating between Odessey and non-Odessey gameplay. If this can be made in a way that means VR players do not constantly have to restart the game to switch between the contents, I believe it would possibly be attractive even to VR players like myself.

I am sorry to have to continue to ask for more clarification, but this is important to VR players and the entire current situation has not only put a dark cloud over the medium term future, but also over the excitement we have had for the upcoming release of the fleet carrier update - which this unfortunately completely overshadows - and leaves us with a bitter taste in our mouths.

How cool would it be if I, as a full time ship pilot who doesn't get his hands dirty with ground pounding, could hire players to do stuff for me on the ground to help me out? Like get me supplies or something only specific to Odyssey fps gameplay?
Bro, I don't know how to say this, but... have you looked at Fleet Carriers? Do it, and you'll know how much "hiring" anyone for anything we'll get. I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.

rofl My god man... when was the last time you played VR? The oculus dev kit 1? Walking/locomotion based VR experiences have come a LONG way since then. I haven't seen an experience like what you described since 2017. Moving around in VR games now is as smooth, if not moreso, than KB+M. Hell, look at HL Alyx. Even simpler games like Rec Room- people literally play VR sports games like paintball with ease. The top VR games are all non-seated experiences.

Think you are missing the point, those are all dedicated VR titles. It takes time and resources to get that right, far more than the current sit down mode. There is still no standardised API across VR platforms to help streamline development etc Of course I'm somehow delusional to point out the internal failings of the VR industry! Frontier should just charge more for the VR version of the DLC but it will still need more dev time ;)

Yea...

Still, while I had no interest in fleet carriers for being fleet carriers, they are the closest thing to a trading system between players we can have, so I kinda want one just to act as a trading wallet. lol

If any of the CM's are still reading I have a genuine question ...

Will people in VR still be able to fly space ships around beneath a blue sky?

In other words, at what point is VR not suppored? Is it when you enter glide for an atmospheric world, when you transition to "legs", or when you launch an "Odyssey" version of Elite?

The way I understood it: You launch the game into vanilla, Horizons or Odyssey. You can't have VR flight beneath a blue sky since blue skies are Odyssey exclusive content where VR is not supported.

Edit:
Forgot to include the fact that I'm super excited for Odyssey! I'm definitely one of the people who have been in it since beta, and the ability to leave your ship and interact with the galaxy at a more granular scale is one of things that I find most compelling. Can't wait for the team to show us more over the coming months! I know there is probably a lot of work to still be done, so don't forget that just like in the alpha-beta stages community feedback as things are being developed could be really good to help shape the quality of the upcoming update!

While we wont be getting "base building", is it safe to say we will have some other way to gain some agency as players outside of ships/fleet carriers? Maybe we can't build a base but we could buy one? We can't build them but they are pre-fab that we still get to choose where they go?

I also am disappointed by the lack of VR support, but I do completely understand that the undertaking for designing all the new gameplay elements to work with VR and work well is quite an undertaking. It would be great to see this at some point in the future though. As a lot of other people mentioned elite is one of the better games for VR support and that extending over to this next era could be a really great thing.
