Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

Well that's extremely disappointing to hear about VR. I've been an Elite fan since the BBC and Elite Dangerous since Kickstarter. The gameplay and content has not improved where it should have done in recent years - due to lack or resource, or technical obstacles, I don't know, but exploration in VR remains one of the game's strengths.

I'll admit that for one of the first times since 2015, I have not been playing since the end of 2019. The gameplay motivation is finally no longer there at all. However, I intend to return for some exploration when I get my hands on an imminent Pimax 8KX headset, as 4k per eye will reinvigorate my interest, to an extent. What a shame I won't be able to enjoy Odyssey in the same way. I do hope you have some truly revolutionary gameplay on the way with this new feature, if it's more of the same but just on foot, that may well be the nail in the coffin for me. Other space games have overtaken ED at this point. I don't wish to be negative, but it's important to be honest and give you feedback from a long time player.

Nonetheless, I hope that progress goes well for the team and that the new feature will meet expectations. And perhaps there is room for VR support further down the line. o7

I was under the impression it was just a cute euphemism for being able to walk around in a game that's based on flying spaceships. Not everybody takes things super literal

I think that their consternation is that conversation around "space legs" almost always involved walking around player ships, walking around stations, etc. Just like atmospheric planets always involved conversation about flying ships down to atmo planets, looking at life, etc.

The reality that legs actually involved running around a mars-like planet with a blue sky, no ships or stations, and maybe not even being able to take the ships down there kind of a "Monkey's Paw" situation.

"I wish I could have the ability to walk in elite dangerous, and visit atmospheric planets!"
"Wish granted! You can walk on a desolate planet with a blue sky that you can't fly your ship around!"

If that ends up being the case, I can definitely see how some folks might be a little disappointed =D

For clarification purposes, does that mean when playing Odyssey there will be zero VR support? I.E. all of the things we can currently do in Horizons we will NOT be able to do in VR? Or will the game function like it does currently up until you want to go for a walk; then you have to remove your HMD?

Also, those commenting about seeing the new planet tech in Horizons, don't forget that Vanilla Elite doesn't show Horizons planet tech at all so unless things are changed to include it don't expect to see any difference, pics below, first is vanilla, second is horizons.

Did you watch the video? It shows an anaconda and at least 1 cobra flying around on the atmospheric planet shown.

Ah, damn. I wasn't aware of that. I thought the planetary tech was shared throughout. That's another dampener on Odyssey if they do the same. :(

Especially when you consider that a lot of us have spent a lot more than that on a PC that supports VR, and currently I only play Elite VR (although that may change it seems).

If you only play Elite Dangerous with your VR Gaming PC and VR headset then you're missing out on A LOT of AAA quality VR gaming content:

Half Life Alyx
Skyrim VR (with the Wabbajack VR Essentials Mod Pack)
Fallout 4 VR
No Man's Sky VR
Echo Arena
Lone Echo
SuperHOT VR
Killing Floor Incursion
Wilson's Heart
Lucky's Tale
Stormland
Asgard's Wrath
Arizona Sunshine
Arktika.1
Wilson's Heart
Moss
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
Chronos
Edge Of Nowhere
The Climb
Dead & Buried
Dead & Buried 2
In Death
From Other Suns
Robinson The Journey
LA Noir: The VR Case Files
Mage's Tale
Vader Immortal
Theseus
Technolust
Borderlands 2 VR
Narcosis
Windlands
Windlands 2
Obduction
The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter VR
The Exorcist Legion VR
DiRT Rally
War Thunder
DCS World
Project CARS 2
Assetto Corsa
Alien Isolation VR Mod
Doom 3 BFG VR Mod

And I've probably missed out a few, those are just off the top of my head without going through my Steam and Oculus Store libraries!
