How are we to know that they wouldn't have kept it secret until the last minute?
Clearly the trailer was ready for release. How do we know they weren't going to release it a week after the Carriers come out?
Either way it's out now, so no one is being surprised by anything "without warning"

I can understand the upset, but i can also see that it would have been stupid to delay an update in an attempt to get VR to work, and more importantly, work equally well with non-VR players. I can imagine the rage had they churned out a poor VR experience, it would have been much worse.

Im pretty patient when it comes to the game but id be pretty annoyed if there was another delay just to get it to work in VR for what is a relatively small amount of the player base. They've not said it definately wont appear and hopefully they'll give further details when they start going into the game in more detail.

Yeah, I'd like to see the new content and then see if the VR-heads think it would be a fun VR experience - maybe at that point it will be 'ahhh, makes sense now'

The thing that concerns me and that FD haven't clarified is the implication from the announcement that VR users will not be able to have cockpit VR on atmospheric worlds.

I get that 2D in VR requires development effort but cockpit VR in Elite already works really well, (it's the reason I have a headset,) and if they are choosing to gate atmospherics behind the Odyssey update and therefore denying VR users from experiencing those worlds that makes no sense to me.

I'd really like FD to clarify that.

You are more than capable of playing without VR you simply refuse to. That is your decision to make and in no way fdevs responsibility
What a load of nonsense. They are taking away existing features and functionality from the new game. Features that VR users have invested in both financially and in our time. I could walk the 30 miles to work but I drive, if someone took away my car I would not walk.

It's not though. Nothing is changing from what you have now.
Again. VR hasn't been removed from the game. All we know for sure is that Its simply not being added to a new aspect of Elite. The language being used in the thread is simply wrong.

@Mad Mike summed it up nicely:
FD have been teasing us the new planetary tech since 2017 as a hook to bear with them
... It now seems none of that will be coming to my game, whilst I could be wrong it does look like the next expansion will be totally separate from the horizons build.
I can only add: it's a nice atmospheric planet you have there, odyssey commander. It's a damn shame I cannot even enter it's exclusion zone, if I even can see it at all in her "new tech" glory, because oh wait, new tech is in Odyssey, not in Horizons.

I have VR via a old Oculus Rift DK2 720p set 2nd hand
even 720p looks nice
We have come a looong way since then, the current resolution compared to DK2 is insane especially on the HP Reverb (2160x2160), the screen door effect is almost non-existent now, the field of view is much bigger (drastically in the case of Pimax), and the tracked controllers do all the difference in the world in terms of immersion.

No, I've not. Up until recently, I didn't think I could as I'm blind in one eye.
I am sorry to hear about that. I still think you could benefit from VR for the experience of ship being all around you and your head movements tracked flawlessly, however without the stereo effect which you have never experienced it would just be "better track ir" with the added benefit of isolating you from outside world. I have a friend who doesn't have depth perception, and he still bought an oculus rift s because of the Elite experience he had. He said his condition is "similar to what you would see if you cover one of your eyes". But it all comes down to the disposable income one has for toys, because that's what VR is to me - a really damn fine toy.

I am voting with my wallet. Was considering buying a VR headset to play ED. Will save myself the money now!
Vote with your wallet, buy a VR headset and play a plethora of other great VR games out there. They won't be Elite but that doesn't meant they won't be awesome. I gave the list twice in my posts, I'll link it into my sig because people still have this strange misconception that it is still 2016, VR has just released and there are no games for VR at the moment.

The only thing excluding you is a personal choice you have made.
It's like me saying I'm excluded from the VR section of Elite because I don't have the kit.
There is no VR section of Elite just as there isn't a 5.1 surround sound section of Elite excluding headphone wearers from playing, due to a personal choice that they made. KB+M players aren't excluded from HOTAS gameplay either.

Is it though?
So many of the "VR crowd", before it was announced there would be no support at launch, were busy bleating about vomiting over their keyboards or not being able to control their CMDR in FPS, and how they would be disdavantaged over the KB/M crowd, etc, ad nauseum...
Now they are up in arms that they can't play in VR from launch...
Priceless...

Yes, I play in VR, Yes I have a high-end PC... Do I actually care over much? No, not really, I still play more than 50% of the time in pancake because of RL constraints, I'll just play anyway - so, can't play the new content in VR at launch, oh well, that's life 🤷‍♂️

You will never get the vote of the "Me, me,me" Snowflake generation with that attitude.

The thing that concerns me and that FD haven't clarified is the implication from the announcement that VR users will not be able to have cockpit VR on atmospheric worlds.

you are not being denied noone will get to see atmospheric worlds in vr you simple have to play pancake like the rest of us do.

Sorry if this has been asked already (most likely it has but this thread has grown fast..) but will our Cmdr character be able to die in ED Odyssey?

Hmm lets fun-speculate here:

Our cmdr can not die (as it is now): There is a shield that surrounds our spacesuit, when it gets to zero , our spacesuit starts to recieve damage and then when its health gets to zero it blows up and we get instantly tranfered to
1.) a suit-rebuy screen.
2.) Inside our ship naked (censored)
3.) a ship-rebuy screen - our suit health is tied to our last controlled ship's health so when our suit blows up, our ship blows up as well.

Or

Our cmdr can finally die: Similarly our suit has a shield field, when it reaches zero, it starts taking damage and when suit itself reaches zero health, we die
and we are transfered to a coffin where we have to pay life insurance to get resurrected either inside our last controlled ship or inside a hospital - station/starport/base.

I totally disagree with you, small development team have made great things in porting games in vr with a very small budget (borderlands 2/ serioussam vr/ skyrim vr / no man's sky) frontier are just lazy and just cares about bringing star citizen fans into their games with big guns and fitted armor...

I wouldn't say those are great examples of VR. They are average at best. But yes, I can see why some people would prefer average VR rather than no VR. It certainly shouldn't be impossible to implement VR at that level. As many have suggested, it's likely a case of resources.
