ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

It is quite clear for me:
If the Odyssey expansion can't be played in VR, but the old content still can, I might continue playing Elite Dangerous. I would just pass on puchasing the expansion. If the whole game will be unplayable in VR because they changed the engine, I will leave it for good. And I will certainly not buy anymore items from the shop until I know where this game is going to.

I am so sad and angry about this devastating VR news, you have no idea, Frontier.

That's what I thought, if the engine doesn't support it VR users are stuffed. Who wrote the engine, FD?

As far as I know, yes, although others are far more knowledgeable about that than I am. Their language does seem to imply that it will continue to be worked on. I wonder if it is just an unwieldy interface with hotas setups switching to a mouse interface while in VR that is driving it. I don't know though as I don't VR.

Edit; then/than I hate that.

I invested a lot of money in a top(ish) end pc and VR just for the purpose of playing Elite. I also migrated my Elite game from PS4 to PC, and lost all my progress as a consequence, so that I could use VR. I feel utterly stupid now frankly.

I've spent a fortune as well but have not gone VR yet due to needing the corrective lens inserts. Have found a supplier for that so I really don't know why I have not done it as the price is not off putting. Perhaps when Odyssey goes VR I'll spring for it.

Edit; some days my spelling appalls me.

@Tim Smith

I think for die-hard VR users, who will not play Elite Dangerous without VR, the most important question is, "will FDEV commit to Odyssey being VR compatible and, if not at lauch, when?".

I will only speak for myself, but other VR users may feel free to chime in, I will NOT buy the Odyssey DLC until it is FULLY VR compatible in ALL modes of game play.

FDEV has the opportunity to garner some good will by not stone-walling the VR community on this important (to us) issue and responding expediently.

Thank you.

Edit:
Signed the petition.

I honestly don't expect the space legs option to be compatible, I can see that could be a big issue for developers. But I don't see any good reason why VR players can't enjoy the same graphical enhancements such as atmospheric planets, additional detail, multiple SRVs (if that's going to be a thing) etc and so on.

It would be nice to perhaps in the short term switch over to screen when walking and then back when playing in a more "normal" mode. Clumsy but if short term...

Hey Fdev, you could invoke the "community letter" principle and delay launch however long you need to in order to CYA. Any excuse in a poop storm.

But I thought loads of players use hotas VR or non VR? I have friends that play VR and non VR and they use hotas and keyboard. Hell I lift my headset up when I have to type stuff like in the galaxy map like all VR players have to.

For me, this depends. If Odessey players are getting significant advantages in the new content (a la engineers in Horizon advantages in the base game), I do not think I will continue playing even if the old content is playable in VR.
Same here, I feel like I would be putting time and effort into a dead end. I should be on elite now but bought Lone Echo instead.

I wish I had someone I knew with a VR system near me to try. I would be a lot more interested if I could try it out.
If someone wants to try VR, I'd suggest a google search - maybe in your city there's a "VR arcade saloon" - I observe a renaissance of them, which is kinda nostalgic, because they remind me of coin-ops arcade parlours from my childhood :) I've seen them opening in many cities even here in Poland, so there's a high chance that some are near you and you don't even know. Of course with the whole COVID situation they might be closed, but patience isn't something that Elite Dangerous players lack, is it? :p

I agree, I don't really see the problem with that; perhaps it is the engine, I am not knowledgeable enough to say.

I see a lot of questions asking if only parts of Odyssey with be out of bounds for VR players. Will we still be able to fly in atsophere etc. But isn't the removal of VR due to the change in engine. And surely that means all of Odyseey is unavailbale to VR players? Anyone confirm?
There is no change in engine from my understanding. Why are people saying this.

The old content can be used in VR, that's already been confirmed.

From the wording the problem isn't the engine, just that the gameplay expirence is sub par when played in VR, and Frontier would rather you have no VR than ship a product with actively bad VR support at launch.

Yeah, that is what I have been taking from it, but like I said, there could be other reasons. If that is what is holding them back they should just cough up, ask the community about it and get some input. I'll bet that most would accept partial time VR over none with the knowledge that it will move to full in the future. Just Fdev being Fdev.

That's just new planet generation tech, not new engine, they are still using the Cobra Framework. I don't see how that has any bearing on VR compatibility.
No me neither. I must be the FPS that is a problem for the devs. But as other games have shown FPS in VR is possible.
