Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

Thank you FD! I'm very excited about your new DLC as I've been with you since the first Beta, which I played with an Oculus DK2! Please don't leave your VR fan base behind.

@Tim Smith

I think for die-hard VR users, who will not play Elite Dangerous without VR, the most important question is, "will FDEV commit to Odyssey being VR compatible and, if not at lauch, when?".

I will only speak for myself, but other VR users may feel free to chime in, I will NOT buy the Odyssey DLC until it is FULLY VR compatible in ALL modes of game play.
Could not agree more. I hear so many (non VR) people predict that VR players are just talking nonsense saying they won't buy this. Trust me: we're deadly serious,. We are not interested in a 2d spinoff of what we perceive is Elite. Plus, if Odyssey does not go VR, then Horizons will become abandonware.. No bugs solved .. ever. All attention will go to Odyssey development

Oh my! flight sim is the next kick in the teeth waiting for me... £79 for pmdg 737 NGX for FSX, had to rebuy for p3d for £100, MS return stabbing LM in the back, P3D will go (probably) pmdg will state the 737 ngx for ms2020 is a new product and you will need to rebuy... this will be typical of many of my add-ons... I can't afford to keep up... Elite has been my saviour. I hope your project takes off... going through the pain will make you a better producer.
Thanks, but at ~1 million copies sold and knocking MS Flight Sim off the Amazon.com best seller list for six weeks, I'm happy in my production skills.....VU3 awaits....

Im really fighting with myself right now. Should i buy the DLC and have the new content or should i wait untill its VR supported in a playable way (the, as soon as you walk your VR-Headset turns into a monitor stuck on your face, variant would be ok for me as long as i still have full VR expirience while flying). I really like Elite but after playing it in VR i really dont see why i should go back.
I just hope they reconsider their decision and add VR support on their high priority list after bug fixing.

You're joking right?
You want to pay money... just in case VR gets added later??
[Insert twitchy eye meme]

Wouldn't you rather wait and pay later?
As you know, FD are not a moral company anymore, they're not scumbags but they're controlled by their shareholders, where money talks. If you wish to spend money and want software you might never use, would you consider Humble Bundle?

Huh, well, I have this certain bridge...

I don't think morality comes into it - I think Frontier have become GM, defending a position in a culture of fear. They're certainly no Tesla, even if they started off that way...In hindsight I find it ironic DB had the gall to post his congrats to Elon for putting Doug and Bob into orbit in light of that.....what happened David?

FDEV has the opportunity to garner some good will by not stone-walling the VR community on this important (to us) issue and responding expediently.

Thank you.

Signed the petition.

Good luck with that.

I think you’ve got your history slightly muddy there, Braben sued Bell over comments made in an interview:

Edit: the interview in question -
I had thought that court case was effectively a countersuit to the one where Bell started suing Braben over the "expansion disk" / "sequel" dispute from the interview. I seem to have been wrong.

You are the customer so it's your choice and not for anyone else to decide.for you... But if you buy it just know you are essentially doing exactly what FD hope. The ONLY trump card we have in this mess is to vote with your wallet. I can't , I already paid but if not there is no chance I would be preordering this.....
I have backed / EAed a few games in the last few years precisely due to VR in the hope they see a spike related to VR. I have not ever played some of them eg asset to Corsa 2 and pCARS 2 and dirt rally

This is getting scary!( No construction, no interior, no VR?

I think we are all voting with our wallets. We can all just say what we would pay for at this stage and that is going to be up to each and everyone to decide for themselves. Personally, I will have to evaluate exactly what is being implemented and then make a decision, but if there is absolutely no playability in VR, I will not buy it as it simply would not appeal to me. Anything between there and full VR implementation and I would have to carefully evaluate if it was worth it for me to pay and/or to buy cosmetics through ARX. If there is no VR implementation and Odessey offers significant advantages in current gameplay, I would likely stop playing even Horizons and the base game, which definitely would mean no money to Frontier from my wallet.

I see a lot of questions asking if only parts of Odyssey with be out of bounds for VR players. Will we still be able to fly in atsophere etc. But isn't the removal of VR due to the change in engine. And surely that means all of Odyseey is unavailbale to VR players? Anyone confirm?

Nope, all of it will not be comparable with VR at least at launch as revealed at this time

Dear Devs,

I know you have said no base building, but here is an idea for you - not tied to to the core game, but create a base / settlement builder game, using fixed resources that players can build and run settlements with.

Then you can get people to design and build original settlements, that you can put as more unique locations in game. Whats more you could possibly sell it, and generate revenue at the same time.

This could be used just to create the structures that you use, but also to populate them with personalities and characters, if you were feeling really adventurous, it could have its own tie in to BGS so that people could be running them in the game world, with ones that are ignored falling in to ruin or being taken over by automation.

Just a thought
