ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

Saying VR will not be available at launch and saying VR will be available later are hugely different things. Not available at launch is so ambiguous, so non committal, it opens this thread up to endless speculation, it's guaranteed to fill this thread. If I wanted hundreds if pages of ranting that's exactly the sort of thing I'd say. So no one needs to be upset at what was always going to be inevitable. FD could stop all the ranting by just coming clean about VR. This thread content is by design.

And Frankly, I would like to see far reaching alien based planets that would like to do basic trade with earth-folks. Willing to pay outrageous sums for otherwise cheap materials in the bubble/Colonia regions. They would also speak through a text based translator giving galactic level clues through their legends of lost races, rumored surviving races, lost artifacts of enormous value (think 3 billion credits for one lost ancient 'seeing stone'. The first race of communicable aliens I would call the Veloxi. This game, givien the ridiculously unrealistic number of ELWs, remains the deadest galaxy one could imagine.... Why doesn't ED focus on bringing variety and life to an already incredibly stellar forge? Can you imagine starting a home infrastructure of buildings and trading posts on a volitile alien world that doesn't want you to compete with trade there? They start ambushes on your buildings with their alien SRVs only to find 30 of you guys have now settled there and are not worth the battle so they retreat to a 500 km parimeter?

I do sympathise with you ..... It must be annoying but for some of us ED may as well be having the servers shut down... I imaging if ED was announcing they were dropping PC support all together because consoles were their majority sales and pc was a niche..... That the niche pc players would probably kick up a stink
As a non steam user looking at the Odyssey announcement could lead you to think they are as the supported platforms seem to be Steam, Xbox and PS4.

I am a non steam user and am aware that steam is a way of adding complexity to running a PC game, it might offer an advantage to people with more than one game I wouldn’t know.

Among the many unused icons on my PC is an Xbox icon could I run the Xbox version of ED using that?

What are you basing this on?

The majority no longer care enough to express an opinion, because they don't play any more.

Common sense. You said it "The majority no longer care enough to express an opinion" but if they are not playing game they don't count as majority.

I am looking forward to further unveiling of Odyssey over the next few months, the teaser was interesting enough to have me go 'Hmmm, what else?'
I get the disappointment, and already expressed that, but this is content that does appear to be 'game changing' and I really do want to know about, and see, more of the content and changes being offered in this DLC.

I don't think your argument is a particularly useful one. Perhaps it would be better to just express your own opinion & not be too concerned about what the majority think. This is a pretty old game now, a lot of people have played it, enjoyed it & moved on. If a new DLC doesn't offer what they are looking for (to encourage them to return) they just won't buy it, and anyone that doesn't currently own the game (perhaps because it didn't have an FPS element) will make their own decision too.

Of the existing, active playerbase every activity is a niche activity.

Even with the latest update to OpenVR (yesterday) it is dreadful... Yes it is VR, but that is along the lines of saying VGA was HD definition and colour depth :)
My only gripe with NMS is that PCVR resolution is the same as PSVR (I don't know why!).
Flat screen NMS is really quite impressive as graphics scale nicely.
In vr its like late ps2 quality imo i might like it more but i played elite first. to me ED w/o vr > nms with vr

Seriously? So if they made it VR only would you be happy, would you quietly opt out?

Yep, I'd stick with Horizons, which I only bought two months ago.
I might think about buying the kit to play VR though but I'd have to check it out and see how and if it works and if I thought it was worth the investment.
It is a slightly different situation though. You have both setups, VR and normal, so you have the choice to either right now.

Available later is also ambiguous as it doesn’t say how many decades are involved, the ranting etc would still be here but some of it would be focussing on how long.

It's good to see apparent movement forward with the content that was trailed as long ago as 2012. I do like the idea of wandering around on planets (or more) on foot, I do hope that any FPS won't be unbalanced as badly as the ships have become with engineering. I'd rather not go on a snipers run everytime I step outside.

VR would not be the same for you unfortunately. It would be like me using trackIR. Like night and day.
