ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

I use VR for hours and hours without issue as long as I'm flying my ship. It's the SRV, and games where I "walk" that turn my stomach. IRL I can read a book in a car without any motion sickness. But, I do get motion sick on boats (but then I don't travel by boat often). I haven't tried to "push through" the motion sickness in games with walking mechanics, instead I either switch over to the teleport mechanism or (if not supported) I don't buy/play them in the first place.
Thx for satisfying my curiosity. Pushing through is usually not recommended, better to take it small steps at a time (pardon the horrible pun), and make frequent breaks. I needed ~6 weeks to fully adapt, while my wife can jump into Onward with little to no VR training whatsoever ;-)

Hah! In all seriousness, I cannot do "walking" in VR without being sick, but I can manage the teleport mechanic.. but I just cannot see how that would translate to PvP. PvE it's absolutely fine as the AI can aim in milliseconds after you teleport, if it wanted to.

I doubt it was concerns over PvP. My "impression" is that it's either a technical issue (tho, presuambly this will use their VR capable Cobra engine?) or a quality/gameplay issue with getting it to "feel" good in VR, and dealing with the whole walking vs teleporting and that's where PvP might come into it. How do you do PvP FPS with teleport movement? I just cannot see it - probably just a lack of imagination on my part as apparently it's been done.
You are correct WRT teleport. In a shared universe I imagine players would have to have full locomotion and either grow vr legs or play parts in 2d. The only other way I can think of is a novel way a game called From other suns used which had a kind of out of body experience . It would.people at a slight disadvantage but it worked. Google if interested as I can't really explain as on phone and meant to be working

But what happens if you play in 2D Odyssey and you finish your FPS session on an atmosphere planet, sit on a rock, rest your nerf gun against a nice green tree and take a deep breath of clean air before switching off for the night. Next day you switch on and decide you fancy a bit of VR. What on earth (or not on earth) happens?
I would guess the same as happens if you switch from Horizons to vanilla ED. You get put back in space in your ship.

You know teleporting FPS would be insanely good, take aim and bang they disappear only to appear again on some rock behind you, but of course before they take aim you've jumped, great fun. And let's be honest, Captain Kirk and Spock were doing this decades ago!

I tested it with a friend who writes game reviews on some websites, it's a nice fast paced gameplay.

Please pass to the team, that we NEED a DEFINITE answer. A definite YES or NO for POST-LAUNCH VR SUPPORT.

We need to know if it's an end for VR Elite or not. Please understand, that for some of us, going back to monitor gameplay is NOT AN OPTION. Period. :)
If Elite is to drop VR support, then it's the end of the road for some of us and we at the very least DESERVE a QUICK, HONEST answer about this. For all the financial support we have given you over the years as customers.
You are assuming they have a definite answer now. The answer might be yes if we can deliver it to a reasonable standard within budget, no if not. Would that make you any happier?!

That looks great fun! And surely easy to implement for other controllers.

No. It's not rocket science to get VR implemented for Odyssey. It's just a matter of time and money. It is a financial decision that some higher up has to make at Frontier. I won't be satisfied until I know what that decision actually is.

Looking at how low priority VR seems to have had for Frontier since ED's release I never expected a deep VR style FPS shooter in the first place. Since release all work that has gone into VR was to keep it working mostly at a bare minimum. Accordingly I expected it for FPS to be a barebones tacked VR experience with a basic camera attached to the player with just standard mouse/keyboard controls. And for me that would have been probably fine.

Currently there doesn't seem to be even that. If there would be any plans right now to add (even basic) VR support post-launch, i think Frontier would have already communicated that they'd be looking into re-adding it in a future patch after launch. They didn't.

I think your likely to be unsatisfied for some time then. At the risk of being called out for introducing real life into the discussion the economy is taking a big hit at the moment and while small luxuries like games and chocolate do well in a recession, whereas things like family holidays or big tech purchases do not. So FDev maybe waiting to see what happens to sales, of the games and VR kit, and looking to maximise on the development already done for Odyssey before committing any more cash to the project.

You take them with you; because whether you play Horizons or the base game, you have a single shared online account which represents your commander.
The beta differs, because they clone that single account for the beta, typically from an old backup (several weeks old).

I would "assume" Odyssey will share the same single account and all credits etc.
I suppose my latest fear is that Odyssey is a new game, a stand-alone that they can just transfer your account into. If you are familiar with flight sims then an example would be P3D v 4 cost £200... P3D v 5 same sim... new engine ish... ah! its a new sim so new £200 please. Not taken that plunge yet and I don't think I could anyway.

I am searching for a glimmer of hope... but I know that having had the VR experience... well, technology once learnt you would think was irreversible.

I have a question...
When in Horizons or the base game we all accrue credits, materials, ranks, ships etc. When we take part in any beta those resources are available to us but any additional i.e. the purchase of a fleet carrier is lost when the beta ends... because it runs on a separate server I think. If I play on Horizons and then switch to the base game... do I take my new hard earned credits with me and any rankings etc... or are they lost?

Since it's communicated as an expansion, not as an entirely separate sequel in the Elite franchise, it will almost certainly connect to the same Elite: Dangerous production back end as the base game and Horizons.

It's time to collect money to buy out Braben and FD, Horizons and launch them into free float. And something tells me that the game will develop faster and better.
Looking at the moment, Frontier's Market Cap [1] is 764 million pounds. Obviously that share perceived value includes their other games, including their as-yet-unreleased projects, but still, you're probably looking at a sizable 9-digit sum to either buy Elite Dangerous from them or get majority control of the shares to force them to sell.

If you have or can collectively raise that much money, just found your own games company and make your own space game. Sure, you wouldn't be able to include Lave and the Cobra III but most people don't have so much attachment to those bits of IP that they won't play a space game without them.

[1] The amount it would cost to buy all shares at the current price. You might need to offer slightly more for a formal buyout, but it's a reasonable estimate of the sort of money required.

Wait till they actually tell us they're not adding VR, and not adding any support for players who want to play both VR and FPS.. because, IMO, that day will never come.

No, I won't sheepishly wait for them to tell me what they don't want to be upfront about but try to hide to soften the impact on them !
Or, to cite some of the other users here:

FD do sometimes drip-feed bad news out in the hope of diluting it over time.
I'm sure they know far more accurately whether VR will ever be implemented In Odyssey. I little bit more clarity would really help. I feel like a child asking mummy for a new toy, "maybe" always means no.
Given FDevs track record of "transparency" (or more like the absolute lack of it), cancelled features and false promises - its more than likely that it's going to end up like the PSVR situation.
Everytime I heard the phrase "with no defined date" in corporate meetings it would always mean "we're not doing it".

Pehpas it is an age thing, or if you have been exposed to corporate lingo in your life more frequently - well, I am both a bit older & kow this kind of word-smithing when statements try to turn bad news into something which the recipient won't immediatelly recognize in its extent of badness but will have just enough ambiguity to allow for wishful thinking while at the same time not closing the door for you to tell them later on that you never said it was going to follow at a later stage.
Old trick, nothing FDev invented newly.

Just had a thought, FD say they want to offer "that same experience without compromise" and are therefore dropping VR. But hang on, as every VR player will agree the experience in the entire game in VR is soooo much better than 2d. Surely asking VR users to go back to 2d is a massive compromise that contradicts their own statement? Surely FD should drop 2d and make it a VR only game???
Lol true dat
Also let's.be honest ED is literally full of compromises anyway little features which don't really work 100% or design decisions which are quite shallow. This is true of many games and it does.not make elite a poor game..... But it does weaken the position of "we will not compromise our quality" to include a feature. Smells like the stuff from bovine bottoms to me ;)
