Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

So we are getting VR crossplay as well? Nice!

Also looking forward to being able to see my avatar’s body when I look down. Great to have some cheering VR news for a change 😁

Now if Hello Games would just copy ED’s SRV for their vehicle controls...

PC has higher maximum number of players in a single instance. Is the PC version going to be bottlenecked by console versions now, or have they found a way to have more players on xbox and ps4?

Imagine that from Frontier... :)

Or CIG.

All said and done, HG keep hitting the ball out of the park and at a beat rate that is bewildering.

SC, ED and NMS really only have one thing in common, the backdrop of space. After that they are as alike as apples, pears and chalk. So let's not compare any game against the others, instead let's judge each on their own merits.

Two further eyebrow-raisers from the patch notes:
  • An option to automatically transcribe voice chat has been added to the Network options.
  • An option to automatically translate voice chat has been added to the Network options.
Speech to text, with automatic translation? Very impressive, and should lead to some awesome “Whaaa...?” messages due to regional accents :D

Question about the new 'crossplay' stuff.

I'm not interested in multiplayer - but I am interested in any way I can link my PS4 saves to my PC saves. Since they haven't added cross-save compatibility (grrrrr), I was wondering.

Could I use both platforms to build a single base? By that I mean - have the two accounts as "friends", find a planet somewhere where we both are, and build a base? Would it be visible on each platform regardless of 'save' positions? The bases are held on the server & are persistent... so it should work (in theory), but it's a bit of a faff to set up & I'm wondering if it's worth it...

Started my adventure yesterday (just made available via Game Pass, very nice move), found myself on a -55 °C planet with -95 °C blizzards, without knowing a single command, and already slowly freezing to death. Then after struggling with the first tutorial steps and with a sodium plant every km I got sent to an even nicer, mildly radioactive planet with a lovely 55 °C acid atmosphere. Built a cozy wooden shack (it must be some very sturdy wood), then after a trip to a station to get some kind of info I found myself pointed to a very pleasant planet with a nice clean atmosphere and 20 °C under a red sky. And absolutely swarming with very aggressive fauna.

Is the game trying to tell me something?

You ought to be able to view the base on both platforms. Trouble is, your base is going to "belong to" one of those two accounts, and you'll only be able to build/modify the base, or access its storage containers, when that account is logged in. So if your PS4 account is the owner of the base, you won't be able to build anything with your PC account unless the PS4 is also logged in. If that's something you can live with then you should be good to go.

yeah, in the early days people complained that the game was too easy... so you're enjoying the fruits of their whine.
seriously though, if it's ridiculously hard you can always restart and hope the RNG is kinder to you, but there's a warmth to be had in sticking with a hard start and surviving in spite of it - and things get a lot easier quite soon, as you get some decent cash and upgrades in your pocket

for me, a predator infested planet is a valuable resource as there's lots of 'kill nnn predators' or 'kill nnn creatures' missions available (and i don't like killing anything that isn't trying to kill me first) - so i'll usually rename the planet accordingly, e.g. 'PlanetName' > 'PlanetName preds' so i can find it easily later.

the same goes for airless worlds (air) and portals (ptl) too - there's plenty of missions asking you to take photos of those two things, so it's handy to be able to build a huge stack of those missions, and then go straight there and take the photo and do them all in one hit. placing a save beacon next to the portal itself saves you having to look for it; the beacon is always visible in your hud.

Ah, I didn't realise that restriction (owner must be logged in) was in place. Thanks.

Never mind then.

This is quite normal. ;)

It often takes a couple of restarts to get a planet that is vaguely habitable without it being a race against time. As others have said though, it does get much easier fairly quickly with even some low-grade upgrades.

One thing though - as part of getting your ship off the ground, you'll have to go and collect a part about 1km away on foot. This can't be avoided. Either on the way there, or on the way back, you will experience a scripted storm, and at that point in the game, you don't have a Terrain Manipulator that you can make an adhoc cave to wait it out.

So you need to either be incredibly lucky & find a natural cave on the way, or collect all the Sodium you can find (look for it using the scanner) and keep shovelling it into your suit when the storm hits.

Little tip: if you are lucky enough to find a cave, mine Cobalt while you wait. It should be everywhere. You can sell this when you get off planet to a station, and it gives you some useful early cash. You can also find good quantities of Sodium and Oxygen in the nasty plants that live on the walls.
