It takes more jumps but with a discovery scanner honking each system the UC data mounts up
I had a base of operations early in the game but I don't think I have any ships left there now. I'm more involved with other things but occasionally I find summon a few ships to a given location, run a few different mission types for some reason or other, then move on.
The engineering unlocks are fun and give you direxct benefits in terms of ship performance. Persevere.I've been taking a pay cut so I can grab some engineering items but I find myself caring less about that now. It feels like too much of a grind. I'm exploring instead.
I'll probably get back to the engineering stuff at some point though.

The discovery scanner is the one that is built in that you honk and lets you do the Frequency Survey Scan or FSS to find out more about the system.Not sure if the discovery scanner is the one that comes as standard but I do make most of my money from cartography data. I'm not greedy. It's just nice side cash which keeps me going. Unless I get bored and attack a pirate. Then I usually have to pay the insurance on my ship.
The thing with the materials is you can accumulate them steadily as you play your normal game, and can use the material traders to swap around what you have found for what you need, though the exchange rates can be awkward.I've been taking a pay cut so I can grab some engineering items but I find myself caring less about that now. The one you have to buy is the Detailed Surface Scanner or DSS that you can use to map planets and rings in a way that looks as if you are nuking them from orbit to be sure.
I've not tried the FSS but I did use the survey scanner properly for the first time as I headed out of the bubble. It seems a bit iffy though. Sometimes it makes a clear mark where you hit the planet and sometimes it doesn't. The dev team needs to fix that, I think. Scanning planets is a grind but it'd at least be more challenging and enjoyable if I knew where I last hit the things.

Making some effort just to unlock either of the first two engineers that work on the frame shift drive and thrusters as even a grade 1 upgrade can do wonders to your ships performance.
Something amiss there - I have not seen this - I always see the impact and scanned area.

The only times I don’t see the mark are when I forget to check the other side of the planet, hit the same place, hit a ring or most commonly just miss. when I look at the route I find that even with a fuel scoop I will not make it.
