Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

That sentence might work better in the style of “Professor” Stanley Unwin from Carry on Regardless and later Gerry Anderson’s Secret Service.

All slippery slidey in the wettey ridey, a young lad set out in the early mordey to find heaths wisdom, and true love in flower petals arrayed. Goodly byload.

Also, I just exploded my first ever 'roid /chuffed

I reached my destination system in one piece, and parked the carrier in orbit around the earthlike world.

I'd forgotten how beautiful the sky is out here:

I discovered this planet some years ago. I don't remember it having a human settlement on it then, but scanners were worse back then, too. Maybe I missed it? Anyway, there's people living on it now!

Perhaps someday I'll be able to land there and visit :)

So, another excellent day mining! Loving the Taxi service, got a few reliable ones bookmarked.
Tried the T-9 miner kitted out for all types of mining, yeh, not such a good idea, very inefficient.

Also, came back thinking I really need to add more active collector limpets... No, I just need to make sure they are assigned.
640 tonnes with 2 limpets when I actually had 5 available! 🤦‍♀️

I think if you just abandon the missions, keep the cargo in your hold , it becomes stolen. Then go to black market to sell.
If a mission is abandoned early enough , you may not get a fine fron the mission giverer. If no goods in the hold...and your already at friendly level.

I actually figured out what was going on. I had abandoned 2 of my missions and the cargo showed up as stolen and was presumably good to sell at the black market but when I clicked on the stolen cargo to sell it I didn't notice it was combining all of the same type of good, whether it was stolen or active haulage, into one sum so when I clicked sell all it wouldn't work. I had to slide it down to just the amount that was stolen and then it sold.

I'm really sorry to hear this. The FCs have opened up new gameplay for me, and I'm very happy with mine, so it upsets me to find that you are so negatively affected.

Up until now it's been possible to pretend that the galaxy is more empty than it is, because players left little evidence of their activity behind. Now, however, you can clearly see which places are most popular, because there will be carriers there. I expect every populated system in Colonia will have a fair share of carriers, simply because there are so many fewer populated systems there.

Player hotspots like Colonia and Shinrarta and Deciat have always been busy, but now you can clearly see that it's so.

I think it's a good thing, in the end, but I do see the other side as well.

I'm heading out Colonia way now, myself. I started out last night, and I'll be arriving in "my" system in a few days time. That'll put me about 500 LY from Colonia itself, so 10 minutes in a normal exploration ship, or 20 minutes in a carrier (1 jump).

I'm planning to hang around a while, do some exploration around my little base system, and then head back. No set schedule, so I'm flexible.

Simon, if you want to return to the bubble with all your ships, perhaps I can bring you back with me when I return. I'd just need to install a shipyard for the journey, and then you could put all your ships on. I'd be glad to do so, if you like.

That is an incredibly kind offer, thank you so much. However, I have absolutely no idea how this works. I'm on Xbox, so are we compatible? Do you have space for more than one ship? In terms of the expensive ones to ship IIRC I have Corvette, Cutter, Clipper, T7 and Python up at Colonia (plus various tiddlers but they'd be relatively cheap to send back). And is it too expensive/do you want to install a hangar? I'm not aware of any game mechanic which would enable me to pick up the tab. But if I have not missed the boat, and within the unavoidable and somewhat embarrassing irony of using a Carrier to address my Carrier-related sadness, that would be a wonderful offer, thank you. I don't see Colonia ever diluting, but there might be a small corner of Bubble space where I could hide and pretend to play a Carrier-free game. If you mean it? Even the offer itself has me inordinately grateful, so you don't even need to follow through/defeat the hurdles to have me in your debt, Commander.

This is the kind of stuff I love about the community. :)

Seconded. It's my escape from the unpleasant realities of lockdown life and a worsening society at large.

We ought to create a private group for us forumites :D

On here or within the game?

Well I was going to add (until a work call rudely interrupted me) that this thread and the people in it are what I would call "the really nice thread people" :)

Even where we disagree, it is courteously and considerately :) It's always a pleasure to come back here!

A private group would be great :)

I really sympathise with this. I must confess I was shocked by just how many carriers there were. I think INARA was listing something like 5000+ (before today's patch which has shuffled things up a bit with it's unique ID change). I really didn't expect that many players to have that many credits. For me, it's not so much the long distance thing (although now you say it I totally get that too) - it's the density within popular systems in the bubble. I know you can filter them out of galaxy map and nav panel but I feel like the system maps of places like Lave, Diso and Shinrarta have been changed forever (and not in a good way, it's like seeing a beauty spot suddenly full of BMW's and Audi's). I did wonder in the beta whether they'd disperse around the galaxy after a while but I really don't believe that's gonna happen now. And actually, it's not even just the system map. Even when you're just flying around you can be looking out of your left window awed by the wonderous view of the cloud formations on a nearby gas giant, and then you look to the right and see targets such as Trumpelstilskin, Fleetwood Smack, I Buy LTDs For A Dollar and Carrier McCarrierFace!
@Simon Templar (and others) - there is still one place, unlimited in scale, where you can pretty much guarantee not encountering another human soul for months of truly glorious, unspoiled exploration ... take your expedition planetside!

At least until Odyssey allows people to erect Coca-Cola vending machines all over the place!

Yes agree on the ruined maps, thank you for that. I, too, was surprised at the sheer numbers. It is a different game forever, and certainly several notches less challenging and mysterious. Now feels very modern - like those online maps people post designed to take all of the 'reveal' from any game, in order to 'rank up' more quickly. I am of a relatively modest level in RDR2, but regularly defend myself against much higher level players who might want to mess with my day (who are in a minority) purely as their high level has been achieved through off-table support rather than through learning the game and developing a skill set. It's a modern curse. I tend to favour the methodical route to a success, and find it more satisfying. I passed three Carriers when last playing using sexually-explicit ship names, too, 'cleverly' respelt; so a further issue is that I'd suddenly be less happy if my kids wanted to play the game (I have four kids, 7-15, and my three sons (11, 13 & 15) have all at various points eyed Elite. Arthur in particular is not going anywhere near it with some of the Carriers I have seen. Apologies, conscious I switched points there!

The spoilt beauty spot point resonates with me. We live in a National Park IRL (the benefits of both working largely from home, these days) and we go through odd periods (for instance, during the current semi-lockdown) of having to brace for impact as the more challenging end of the mass tourist market alights upon us for whatever period. Bank Holidays in the sun aren't great, with regular fires owing to impromptu barbequeques. But don't get me back into rant mode. I'm a gentle, content soul, really.

Hmm.

Well, I created a group. It's called "Tyres O'Flaherty" and anyone can join. I thought I'd be able to name the group something suitable but there you go - rushing into things without researching first! :ROFLMAO:

If you do enter it, please don't be offended if I don't answer chats - I'm not normally looking out for them so will more than likely miss them :D

All welcome. Do as you will - I have no aims for the group other than what you want to do. Come and go as you please and do what you like - it's just a bit of fun you can opt in or out of as you like.

Incidentally, I was running low on some materials so had to go to Dav's. This happened:

Truly stuck no matter what. Quit the game and it had shifted slightly, allowing me to jump boost up, turn over a few times, fracture the trans-axel, warp the sub frame and dent the furry dice before landing upright again.

Where is this group? I'd join, if my incessant moaning and griping has not rendered me entirely PNG. You are really a very patient group.

Guess where the Crystalline Shards are...

:-(

Simon, I'm still heading to Colonia on my PC profile....I'll probably take so long to get there most of the FC's will have dispersed or gone bankrupt and had their carriers repossessed by the Galactic Bank :) Not too worried over it, but I understand how it can be a right mess right now.

Trouble is, there's nowhere for most of them really to disperse to up at Colonia, as there aren't as many hubs, so I think that concentration might well remain worse than in the Bubble.

The in-game group should be available from here:

I'd not set up a group before so it's just a bit of fun if you want you want to hop in. Completely up to you and it should auto-accept now - I hope! Sorry it's called "Tyres... ": in my naivity, I thought you could call a group something once created and I didn't realise the group was the CMDR name

Incidentally, I was reading some stuff while pondering my next exploit, probably some LTD3 goodness to get me to fleet carriers which segues quite nicely to my though process... I came across this article in the Wiki:

So... yeah. These things can already move. So... yeah. To me, that means fleet carriers are as old as dirt and have been around since inception.

Then again, I tend to overthink things sometimes :ROFLMAO:

Interesting, haven't thought about groups before. But presumably we'd only encounter those of us who are on the same platform? Don't think that ED does cross-platform, yet, other than Carriers?

Yeah, it's weird. You can use somebody's carrier, but you can't actually meet them in person.
It would be great to have a TRUE cross-platform, not just shared galaxy. Maybe one day they're going to do that with at least the XBox. IIRC they were thinking about it at the start, but the main obstacle is XBox's weird update schedule (basically Fdev would have to submit the update ahead of time and all other platforms would have to wait) which is no longer the case, I think, and Sony simply said NO and they are quite opposed to cross-platform for some reason. But (again, IIRC) when comes to the engine and matchmaking servers, I don't think there were any real problems. It's a shame, really.

Quick note about LTD mining. I'm seeing a lot of complaints since the patch, saying that it's broken.
I think not, just a slight nerf to overlapping hotspots.
I had a lazy few hours and picked up 640, just from Sub Surface, (ignored cores, surface etc).

If you're not seeing any, move area!
Just boost away or exit/re-enter the hotspot.

Safe mining Commanders!

That is an incredibly kind offer, thank you so much. However, I have absolutely no idea how this works. I'm on Xbox, so are we compatible? Do you have space for more than one ship?
Yes, anyone from any platform can land on a carrier. So we won't be able to actually see each other, but you can still ride along. I believe we can chat via system chat, too, if we're both online.

How it would work:
1) I'd have to install a Shipyard. I can store only my own ships unless I have a Shipyard, which then allows others to transfer their ships to my carrier, just like a station.
2) I'd have to jump the carrier to someplace near where your ships are, to make the transfer costs as low as possible (I transferred all my ships to the carrier from Jameson while I was 1 jump away in the carrier. It didn't cost much. I didn't even bother to add it up, it was insignificant.
3) Once your ships are onboard, then it's just a matter of me returning to the bubble and parking close to wherever you want to put your ships again.
4) Transfer your ships to their new home, and voila. No huge transfer costs :)

Installing a Shipyard costs 250,000,000 credits (one time fee). It adds 6,500,000 to the weekly upkeep, and 3000T to the weight (so slightly increased fuel usage). That would be my total outlay, so no big deal. I'd uninstall it once we were done with the trip.

If you want to help defray the costs you can just help me refuel with Tritium back in the bubble. It takes quite a few trips to haul enough Tritium for the ride back! I can set up a buy order for Tritium that's the same price the station is selling at, so you can just buy it at the station and sell at my carrier for no cost.

Schedule-wise, I'm very flexible. I'm only about 500LY from Colonia right now, so I can pop over whenever and park the carrier so you can transfer. I was planning on doing a bit more exploration before returning to the bubble, but I don't mind changing my plans. They aren't set in stone or anything. I'm just following my whims, and helping a friend is one of my better whims :) So once your stuff is onboard, I'll just fly back to the bubble and then decide what I want to do next.

So yeah, we can definitely get you back to the bubble without much trouble. Just let me know when you'd like to do the ship transfer, and we'll go from there.

Simon,
Actually, I have an alternate suggestion. The area I'm in is pristine. I'm surrounded by undiscovered systems, and it's very peaceful.

Sooo, how about this idea? I come get you in Colonia. Then, before heading back to the bubble, we come back out here and spend a week or two leisurely exploring, getting some exploration credits and first discoveries and first mappings. It'd be fun and there's nobody else out here. No carriers except mine, and it's only in one system. The rest are empty! :p

Also, I've already discovered a planet with hotspots for void opals, low temp diamonds, and tritium, all in the same ring. If you like, we could goof around mining until we have a few thousand LTDs on board, head back to the bubble after that, sell the stuff and end up richer than we started. Mining out here is quiet, too, with no NPCs or pirates, and no system chat going on.

It just depends on what you want to do. I'm flexible.

Also, I'd like you to give me some RDR2 tips, because I want to like that game but so far it's not grabbed me :)
