VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

I really wish the FD would give a likelyhood of VR in Odyssey eventually on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being very unlikely to 9 very likely. I feel that the answer would be 2. It would help if they did this.

You think so? Doesn't that just mean that 2 is slightly less very unlikely than 1? How's that help without any context? We need details, and ideally discussion from Frontier. Putting a number to it doesn't really clarify anything on its own...

if they say 8 or 9 then I would be more hopeful
Sure, because that would mean there is VR mostly, but it would still require context. An 8 means there is VR, but how much then is not perfect VR?

Because, by the number system, if Frontier said 5, what would we surmise exactly from that, other than 50% chance of VR?

Numbers don't help. Details do. IMO.

Me personally, for Odyssey I'd just like VR in cockpit and SRV as per Horizons, but be able to interact in VR with whatever else is in the game. Which during "space legs" could be a projected monitor like we see in VR when accessing a space station.

With that in mind, I don't need VR controllers to work my body and legs in VR necessarily, and can interact the the control options as we have now, plus keyboard and mouse for my first-person movement. I'm a VR veteran, so can walk around seated just fine.

If they did that, I'd be happy. I can't speak for everyone else here, but that would do me and keep me on board. That would be a 5 on Glen Fiddik's scale above- half-baked VR, but functional! ;)

No acknowledgement from Frontier of any support or consideration for VR users is what boils my urine.

They could take a poll, interact with the VR community and gauge opinion here, or elsewhere. But sweet FA from them is very frustrating.

I think we really need one of the following three statements from Frontier:

  • In light of the feedback, we WILL add VR to Odessy at launch.
  • It is too late to add VR to Odessy at launch, however, we cast-iron promise that it will come to Odessy within a timeframe of (for example)1 year.
    • Not a launch but later - sometime, later, eventually... sort of vague platitudes don't count for anything
      • PS4 VR? ("not at launch")
      • Additional SRV types? ("not at launch, but later in the season")
  • Regrettably, VR will never be part of Odessy and is unlikely to feature in the future roadmap of Elite Dangerous because;
    • the company deems VR as far too niche to be commercially viable to pursue.
    • the technology is incompatible with the sorts of experiences we are aiming for with Odessy and future updates to Elite Dangerous.
If anyone feels the need for it, I can dig up quotes on PS4 VR "not at launch", and also quotes promising other SRV types, "not at launch", "later in the season" or "in the future"; and all these things have patently failed to materialise, so IMHO at this time, such vague ambiguous wordings would not be an acceptable answer for the questions asked about will there ever be VR in Odessy.

Whatever is said in response to our feedback needs to be absolute and definitive...

If they announce they are going to add it, they can be ambiguous at this stage as to how integrated it will be. I personally want "a limited VR experience with WASD movement & VR headlook" whereas others want it to be a "full VR experience with hand controls". Either is better than their current position of "Odyssey will not be VR-compatible."

It's frustrating that they can't even take the time to explain it to the player base. Who are we other than people that throw money at them I guess or how I'm starting to feel anyway.

I wish 2d players would join in and have more sympathy for the Vr users cause at the end of the day we all want the same from Elite and that's to be the best it can be.

2d ,Vr and console have all played as one and we all shared concerns and a lot of good feedback also helped fix problems and let exploits be known. Shared money making ventures or setup rescue missions. Don't matter if one had the headset and the other didnt.

All I get from most 2d players that I've talked to are just deal with it. It's not worth it or I cant afford Vr so why should I care. I'd like to see us all together on this one and help us get a proper answer. But like some have said apparently I'm asking way to much.

I agree with almost everything. Given the current state of the game with subsurface respawns, missing fleet carrier livery, etc, and all we are hearing being the sound of crickets - it seems to me everybody at FDev has gone off for summer. Radio silence on all fronts.

On Twitch, Arthur (CMDR Tolmie) the new CM has apparently not looked in the forums so far. I asked "Has Arthur tried VR, and any opinions on its future?" but it wasn't answered.

I am going to move ahead with some other games as if Odessy is never going to have VR and if it ultimately does it will be a nice surprise and I can play multiple games. I don't have to just play em 1 at a time.

I've found the 2D section of the community to not only be apathetic to our concerns, but in many cases belligerent and vindictive, revelling in our disappointment. I genuinely do not understand why they revel in our misfortune, take such amusement from taunting us, or feel the need or desire to show us such hostility?

It’s funny but I’ve not set foot in my ship since the announcement other than to install and check FC. Totally lost my mojo
Likewise, I simply logged in to check the credit balance was in the region of what I recalled it being, made sure the NPC was still deadly, they are - but their avatar is now a geriatric(?), that I had the right number of ships, and after those checks - logged out. I've got the money, I could buy a carrier, but since the announcement, I don't see the point.

Human nature, people group together in tribes and throw stones at the other tribe. So were on the receiving end of that. But guess what, I don't wanna be in their tribe, and ours is way more immersive, am I right!?

Oh missed the bit about Protonwar. Will check it later after work, because I am curious. Thx.
I'll give that a blast later on - however I have to say, I prefer VR Headlook, and for Odessy VR I want VR Headlook and wasd/gamepad for the FPS sections, that would probably be my preference over hand controls, and would certainly be my "computer screen" preference were it to get a vote in the matter.
I look forward to hearing how well you handle full mouselook in VR.

... or if you instantly fall off your chair and lose your lunch...

For me, I first played the game a bit on screen to configure controls and understand what to do (it's just a simple arena shooter). Then I quit and launched in VR. It felt natural. It was just like playing on screen, but in 3d. Mouse aims and you can still look around with your head. It's the exact VR experience I want from a FPS game.

The point here is not VR only. If they start removing support to existing features today it can only mean that they will remove supports for other existing thing in the future.
I don't think it's a good company policy to remove existing competences from their own portfolio.
Imagine if "tomorrow" they announce to stop supporing the PC version because for some reason the consoles market go straight up.
