PS5 revealed

Looks very interesting. No HTPC support apparently. But you think the PS5 will be able to play, save and manage audio CDs? Lossless of course.

Yeah, it's not an HTPC like Kodi unfortunately, and I can't run Kodi on the PS4 so I expect the PS5 to be the same.

But it's a client/server solution, so you don't host any of the media on your client (PS5).

All that is on the server (which doesn't need to be that powerful - a Raspberry Pi with external hard drives would do nicely).

And yes, it handles lossless CDs fine. 🤷‍♀️

Well, well. Live and learn. Thanks again. Now to go check out this Kodi of which you speak. :)

Btw, here's a little piece of intel that you might not know: The PS3 can play WAV lossless. I've got my entire music library in WAV lossless format on a SanDisk ultra dual m3.0 usb drive - 256gb (USB and Micro USB). I assume that this would work on PS4 and PS5 as well. Plus a host of other devices, such as my Denon AVR 4000 surround receiver with USB access on the front, and even Android phones (edit: some android phones - they need to be OTG enabled).
This revelation has mitigated much of my irritation regarding being able to listen to music properly, but I would still love to be able to do all this directly on the future PS5.

The more you know. :)

Edit: had to make this one real quick:

That's how they get you.
FOMO - fear of missing out - that's the whole idea behind consoles and their exclusives. :)

Exactly this - but it did take RDR2 to come along to tempt me. Even though I knew it would probably come out on PC eventually, RDR1 never did so I didn't want to chance it.

Then you get "free" games through PS Plus every month, and before you know it, you have a collection. 🤷‍♀️

Ghosts of Tsushima doesn't do it for me though. Now maybe if it was GTA6 or NMS 2...

Hah, well, they just announced a GTA5 remaster on the next gen, soo... Nah, that cash cow is apparently not yet properly milked dry so I wouldn't expect GTA 6 in next five to ten years. :)
NMS2 on the other hand, that would be interesting. But I don't think they are even thinking about it seriously at this point.

Unlike you I do consider the Ghost of Tsushima one of the games that will be a deciding factor. It's basically an Assassin's Creed in feudal Japan. Win-win in my books. :D

But yeah, this time around it probably won't be a one or two games that will do it for me. I will need to see a portfolio and be convinced of its worthiness.

A GTA5 remaster would be a very welcome stopgap. I'm betting on 2023 for GTA6 on consoles, purely based on the 5 year gap since RDR2, but time will tell.

As for NMS, that's an idle wish. I know HG are working on two other games besides NMS, and they're not a big studio. It's kinda awesome that NMS is still being worked on at all tbh. So I expect they want to get those other two games out first, and then see. We'd be again talking years, if ever. 🤷‍♀️

GTAV is going to be Rockstar's Skyrim isn't it?
Last GTA I played was San Andreas, and it was mostly for fun and not for story (flying around in an suv was what defined the PS2 for me). I guess it makes sense for it to be the one to introduce for PS5, as they kept describing how the SSD could load a lot of assets and render a lot of stuff at once. It will probably be updated each generation until the PS7 where we could smell the Trevor in 4K smellivision.

Ghost of Tsushima has got my attention and may be the one game where it feels like the concept of playing a movie would happen.
Regarding the lineup, I think it is pretty decent. If Spiderman, Ratchet and Clank, and Astro's playroom are launch games, then this would be a great way to try out what the next gen is like for early adopters. Spiderman could render the entire town at once with fast loading, the Ratchet and Clank game has a very cool mechanic where interdimensional will be real time, and Astro's Playroom will be a free game that comes with every PS5, and it is a quirky 3D platformer. Especially since I think this Astro game would focus on the multiple generations of playstation, so it will be a bit of a nostalgic trip to invest older players.

I am curious how games will be like, I read how games like Demon Souls would allow for settings to be adjusted, so that players could settle for 30fps with the best possible graphics of that game, or lower them a bit to allow 60fps gameplay. I think this is actually really cool as 60fps are hard to come across in a good number of PS4 games, and this setting option could allow for fans of high end graphics to enjoy the game in one way, or those who prefer a faster frame rate enjoy it in another. A good compromise to cater to multiple fans of specs if the game is only capable of one or the other, not both.

Why not? Like Skyrim it's a great game - and continues to make them a ton of money I think. Of course, we all want Elder Scrolls 6 and GTA6, but speaking personally, I'd rather wait until they do it right. Which could be a long time in Bethesda's case if I'm being honest, but whatever.

As primarily a PC gamer, I'm not a fan of forced framerates generally. I know they're the norm on consoles, and it's one of my issues with them. Nevertheless, the launch of the PS5 and new Xbox will set the gaming benchmark for the next 5-10 years, so their existence can't be ignored or dismissed even if you don't own them. All AAA games are written for them with their hardware in mind.

So next year should be a good year for PC gaming as well, purely because of the next gen console releases.

No it makes sense to resell GTA V. I don't mind tbh, I am guilty of rebuying my favorites too. I just noticed how Rockstar see's the potential put into this game to resell it from PS3 to PS5. I might even try it cause it will probably be the most definitive way to play the game by the time PS5 comes. I think it is poetic actually, GTA V was one of the major games released to show the difference between PS3 and PS4, I would love to see that youtube video where they showcase the same game over 3 generations of consoles.

I am just looking forward to next year to be here soon. 2020 has not been that great tbh, and I am just excited that the PS5 specs are not just possible but will soon be available to the public.

Fingers crossed. :)
This is going to be great if it is going to be customizable, (but I am confused why the article keeps referring the software as hardware).
I do not think this is a popular thing, but I want to see if I could customize the sounds made when you scroll through the list of games the system has. The 'ting' sounds used for the PS3 and PSP UI is really satisfying to hear when you scroll through the list of games available in storage XD

I finally got around to upgrading my old (I think 40 inch?) plasma to a 55 inch LG B9 OLED 🙌

IMG_4430.jpeg

I wanted to go to the next step and get a C9 instead of a B9 for the better processor, but all C9 models are sold out in my country and there are only a few B9's left. I went for it as it was sold for a 30% discount and supported the HDMI 2.1 input needed for next gen, and I heard horror stories of how the next line of LG OLEDs have an inferior HDMI 2.1 port.

So far it has been a blessing! There is a jump between a nearly 10 year old plasma with consistent ghosting and 2019's OLED 😂. Especially since my base PS4 now could use HDR, which makes my old games look new. I finally dived intro Horizons zero dawn for the first time to make use of the OLED tv, and I think this TV would make the wait for the PS5 a lot easier.

Interestingly, I think this TV (LG B9 2019) came out saying that it supports 4k in 60hz, where I also heard how LG updated the B9 and C9 of 2019 to support 4K in 120Hz. So now I am interested to see if that will be the case when the PS5 comes out, it will be exciting to see if it supports 120hz, provided the console goes 120hz.

With all the recently announced stuff hanging around waiting for the next gen consoles, I may be forced into finally upgrading my now 4 year old GTX 1080ti and i7 8700k to something more up to date and competent for the new obsessively graphically focussed games for the foreseeable future. My current build handles everything I've thrown at it to date so I'm still reluctant to delve into upgrading the major bits...outside of the addition of a few SSD's, a lot more RAM and complete liquid cooling system that I've already added since I initially built it.

I'm certainly not looking forward to forking out the cost of several PS5's for the experience either...at 1200 quid for an RTX 2080ti that costs only slightly less than what I paid for all the bits to build my entire PC 4 years ago, I still may take some convincing yet. As it is...a new and shiny PS5 seems the cheaper and more sensible option :censored:

For me it's cost : hours of use. So my recent PC although expensive will be value for money in time. In fairness my second hand PS3 has been good value too even though I mostly use it for playing (3D) blu-ray films, and not so much game playing. It has the additional advantage that it has way more processing power than my TV (of course) so all the streaming services play much better than via the TV. (Is it just me, or is Netflx not very good? Some of their Netflix-Original films are 'very not very good'. ymmv)

Samsung also have a very irritating habit of 'updating' the software, such that my local HDD recordings now require an internet connection to play, and some apps get demised. 'Great'.

There's no rush.

A 1080Ti is "fine" - it can't handle real time raytracing and the other funky features of an RTX, but not that many games are taking advantage of that yet, because the user base is relatively low. Games are still being written with the PS4 and XB1 as the baseline tech, and a 1080Ti can eat those for breakfast.

Once it enters the mainstream with the release of the next-gen consoles, that will start to change. Prices will inevitably start to come down too.

I reckon we're looking at at least 18 months before it becomes a 'must have' to keep pace with modern games. Probably longer.

This article just raised my hopes for a return of the all-in-one media hub that the PS5 should be. As a strong advocate for hi-fi audio, I really think that the PS5 should be able to playback lossless CD audio (and DVD and Blu-rays for that matter), and others think so too:
