Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I love Trek too but Discovery and Picard surprised me in their use of profanity. I am not easily offended - in fact, the more offensive and rude things get, the better I like it - but the use of the F word in these series did have me a little taken aback :D
Confess we have not yet seen Picard (lockdown + four kids who stay up ever later + wanting really to do it justice = we're waiting) but we absolutely loved Discovery and have to be honest, I don't even remember any bad language! I was an investigator with HMCE for a few years, so perhaps I now just tune it out (the words I learned during that gig!), but I'm a bit of a boring grammar and profanity pedant with the Templars junior so am surprised at myself. I can't have been rolling drunk for all of it! Although a G&T does help the sci fi slip down nicely.

That's because these two series aren't Star Trek.
They are not entirely bad, like many people say (although I didn't finish either of them, giving up STD after 1st season and Pickard after fourth episode), but they are not Trek. They have virtually nothing in common with the old universe and its atmosphere.
If you want modern Trek, go watch The Orville. That is the true spiritual successor to the original Star Trek. :)
That's very harsh on Discovery! We thought they hit a few key cues very nicely, albeit within the constraints of shooting in 2020. They tied it in to the old Christopher Pike very nicely (indeed, I'd watch a spinoff around that modern incarnation of the character), I thought that his sequences were very sensitive and helped the overall tone. And Gariel Lorca straddled the expectations of the 1960s and 2019 pretty neatly, too. Anyway, always fun to hear another opinion. Must be a nightmare, making a show or a film for the modern audience - we're all so aware of context and history that we can have increasingly precise expectations. They can hit those of person A, miss those of person B, yet both of those people can be close and empathetic pals of person C (and one another). It's a creative minefield out there!

I've certainly tried to learn gravity braking, while participating in Buckyball races and watching what the pros were doing. It's difficult, and you really need to know the system and what approach you'll be taking, and then time it exactly right.

In normal play, I use the good old 75% rule also. It never fails, and it's fast enough.

I do have one little 'trick' that I use if I manage to miss the window for slowing down. If I'm about to overshoot because I didn't slow down in time, I cut throttle and 'nod' my ship down and then up and then back to the target. It bleeds off enough speed that I don't go flying way past :)

I've never managed to do the 'corkscrew' maneuver that many Buckyballers use, which is clearly very fast but gee...I can't coordinate it.
Listen to your engine. It starts to strain as it enters the gravity well but a second or so before the 'speeding' warning.Start rolling, and by the time the warning goes off you are ready to complete the manoeuvre, by pulling a gentle angled 'sideways' loop, and rolling out when you have shed enough velocity.
At least, that's the way i learnt it in the scout.

Although, whilst initially cute, I do hope ttibbles stay in the past.

I found another LTD2, even better than the other one I found last week.

I spent an hour in the peaceful setting and collected 110 LTDs (and 10 incidental Tritium). That's about what I averaged back before fleet carriers, when I was mining in Borann, so I'm quite happy with the results here. But now it's a mixture of laser mining, subsurface mining, and core mining, which is great. Keeps things interesting.

This whole exploration/mining/carrier loop is working well for me at the moment, and I'm having fun.

I don't think we have seen them since DS9.
Hate to drag us off topic again but I'm pretty sure Tribbles were in STD. I haven't watched beyond the first series but I think they were in the webisodes at least.

And yes, Tyres, the ' hubris' stuff from Picard was really weird, but also funny as a meme.

Maybe Codger can post another pic so I don't feel so bad about the off topic thing.

I am now safely berthed in one of the handful of systems in the Colonial area which remains free from carrier presence at this time.

I had noted a system with a bio sign on my last trip down from Sag A*, and being at that time in need of repair decided not to risk the data i had onboard in a possibly disastrous high G landing, instead dropping a marker and continuing on.

Leaving Elle Cyd to the tender ministrations of an experienced and trusted repair crew, I hopped into the seat of Fancy Free and we made our way back to Odins Hold.

Arriving back in the system, i headed for the marked planet, expecting to find the bark mounds which predominate in this region, but i was instead presented with a field of glittering pumpkins who sparkled in the waning starlight as the heavens turned.

Following a peaceful slumber i set about mapping the other 43 planetary bodies my scan had revealed. These included a further pumpkin site , three ringed Y class stars, various geo's , 11 barkmound planets and a triple platinum hotspot. Chump change to today's go-ahead miner, i know, but maybe something a learner might get into to keep him out of trouble, perhaps.

Full system map completed, i returned via the neutron superhighway, encountering one system with twin ringed water worlds, and one close encounter
with a pair of ferocious beasts, who came close to finishing me off when i came out of Hyperspace between them.

Fortunately,i was able to slam on the anchors before gingerly picking my way around to get a better view.

I arrived back to find that two more systems from my paltry stock of safe harbours now host carriers, limiting my options for a carrier-free experience further, but this was to be expected. It's really only a matter of time before i encounter them, but i prefer to do so when i have made my peace with their existence.Until then, i intend to stay out of their way as much as possible.

All hail the bark mound.

All hail the bark mound.

Great post! I didn't know some of the phenomena you encountered even existed! Time to research bark mounds.
