Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

I got NMS first day (2016), was really looking forward to it. O.k. things weren't great, but I found the game good for what I wanted 'Exploring'. I didn't have any issues with HG at the start, just fitted my game play, so why argue.
That said, from those first days the game has come on so much, it's a credit to HG. Exploring in NMS is one of the nicest things in space gaming I've found. Plus I do like my space games.

Hello too, this is my first post on here.

Two further eyebrow-raisers from the patch notes:
  • An option to automatically transcribe voice chat has been added to the Network options.
  • An option to automatically translate voice chat has been added to the Network options.
Speech to text, with automatic translation? Very impressive, and should lead to some awesome “Whaaa...?” messages due to regional accents :D

fully expect gibberish from regions of scotland!

I must admit I really loved it from the start...and it's just got better and better...although I havn't played it much on my new PC.

Welcome. :)

I got NMS as a birthday present from my sister, and it was more or less day 1 (but could have been a few days later). I got 60 or so very enjoyable hours out of that version. I kinda miss the giant Emeril penises if I'm honest.

But of course, what we have now is light years (sorry) ahead of 2016. If only other space games could boast the same...

Yup - same experience for me. I enjoyed the game as it was delivered, and had a dip-in, restart, dip-out relationship with it until the base-building bug bit, something that I didn't see the appeal of until I tried it. Deciding to play the mission through to completion has also supplied motivation to play - who would have thought you could have a coherent (ish) storyline in an open-world sand-box?! Just saying. Not hinting. Well. Okay. Hinting a bit.

As you say HG have been (imho) nothing short of stellar in bringing new, genuinely fun, additional game-play - and all for free. It's got to the state now that I almost feel guilty.

Nice to read your experiences!

As for the bouncing penises... I have jpegs for sale....... :ROFLMAO:

Started my adventure yesterday (just made available via Game Pass, very nice move), found myself on a -55 °C planet with -95 °C blizzards, without knowing a single command, and already slowly freezing to death. Then after struggling with the first tutorial steps and with a sodium plant every km I got sent to an even nicer, mildly radioactive planet with a lovely 55 °C acid atmosphere. Built a cozy wooden shack (it must be some very sturdy wood), then after a trip to a station to get some kind of info I found myself pointed to a very pleasant planet with a nice clean atmosphere and 20 °C under a red sky. And absolutely swarming with very aggressive fauna.

Is the game trying to tell me something?
Yes. It hates you. Grah! :D

Ah, I didn't realise that restriction (owner must be logged in) was in place. Thanks.

Never mind then.
Yeah it's one of those things I've been hoping they change at some point. Ran up against this issue hard when I was playing with a group and we quickly learned that "our" base wasn't really shareable and could only be worked on when the original owner is online. As you correctly note, the base itself is saved on the server so I don't think the restriction is a technical one; likely it's a bit of excessive caution to prevent people from opening themselves up to griefing.

This is quite normal. ;)

It often takes a couple of restarts to get a planet that is vaguely habitable without it being a race against time. As others have said though, it does get much easier fairly quickly with even some low-grade upgrades.

One thing though - as part of getting your ship off the ground, you'll have to go and collect a part about 1km away on foot. This can't be avoided. Either on the way there, or on the way back, you will experience a scripted storm, and at that point in the game, you don't have a Terrain Manipulator that you can make an adhoc cave to wait it out.

So you need to either be incredibly lucky & find a natural cave on the way, or collect all the Sodium you can find (look for it using the scanner) and keep shovelling it into your suit when the storm hits.

Little tip: if you are lucky enough to find a cave, mine Cobalt while you wait. It should be everywhere. You can sell this when you get off planet to a station, and it gives you some useful early cash. You can also find good quantities of Sodium and Oxygen in the nasty plants that live on the walls.

Thanks for the tips! Anyway I wasn't really complaining, I actually like my games to give a resemblance of challenge, I just found pretty ironic how the game threw misery at me right from the very start. 😅

A few hours in and I still have no idea about 3/4 of the things I'm doing and the stuff I'm seeing, I feel like I haven't felt so disoriented with a game and in a completely bizarre place since I first played X2 back in the days. All the crafting that is needed to do anything keeps looking absolutely brutal, I hope I'll get to grips with that eventually, I still feel like they have been a bit overzealous in places with the "harvest this to create this to refine this to build this to assemble this to..." business. Like, screw metal plates, nanotubes and chromatic metal, really.

Made it to my first hyper jump, was greeted with a foaming (?!?) planet. It lived up to its name!

You're not wrong - that was my early days experience with NMS too. After a while things start to click, and your equipment improves to make things less of a chore. After another while I forgot that early mountain (now a hill) that needed scaling, and now find it a charming and chilled experience.

And I'm finally right at the end of the Atlas story (after about 240 ish hours of play in this save alone) and just crafting (the over-long) chain of exotics required to build the <can't remember sun thing> (Heart of the Sun?) to end my journey and 'do that thing'... ...no spoilers, not from me.

Even after this there are still things for me to do too - at least the exoskelton and living ships, not to mention playing with the seqeuncer...

Don't worry. You're having a normal experience. :D

I just started playing Scrap Mechanic, survival mode the other week and it's the same thing. No clue at first what the hill is going on. But with time, you're starting to puzzle things together and it gets easier.

Thanks all for the welcome. I forgot my password and couldn't get back in. Age I guess. :(

Anyone know if the bases made in PS4 can be visited by pc players ?
I've seen an interesting one and thought I would take a look. It was made on PS4, so not sure if I can visit on pc.

Cheers.

I visited a friend's base on xbox (I play on the pc) You just need your friend's code to go to his game (And consequently on his base). Choose the multiplayer option, add your friend's code and load your game.

Yup, it's a completely shared universe across all platforms as of the last update.

It was a portal address I had, just looked interesting, but I know portal addresses can be a little unreliable after updates. Wasn't thinking mp, I usually only play solo, but with the mp turned on in case I happen upon anyone.
Anyway I tried and it was corrupted, probably either an old address rather than a cross platform issue.

Thanks anyway.

I had been secretly hoping they'd add something like this eventually. Between this, the improved freighter customization and inventory management (shots fired Frontier!), and the "anomaly detection beacons" which you can stumble across while asteroid mining, it seems like they're doing a lot to improve the in-space part of their space game. Still holding out hope that we'll see some improvements to ship handling and dogfighting, as well as (my dream) proper shared multiplayer base ownership in the not too distant future.
