There's more content than Skyrim just outside of shot. Promise.

And all of it is hand-designed and totally unlike those boring beige worlds of Elite Dangerous with procedural bases that look like slightly scrambled variations of the same limited asset pools. This is TOTALLY DIFFERENT with unprecedented scope, fidelity, and silky-smooth subsumption. I absolve myself in advance just in case, tho.

The new mountains do look good.

Unfortunately I absolutely hate what they have done with the flight model. The oversteer in particular. And how miserable and tedious flying most ships in atmosphere is. I cant think of a game, especially one based on "flying", where it is so punishing and unfun.

CIG is stringing this project along because Chris and his family are drawing executive salaries. Things like this heightmap give the appearance of "progress", while they're protected from criticism by keeping the project in "alpha". That's why they added more in-game shops instead of new solar systems. And plushies instead of server meshing.

I never test on the PTU.
It seems the new flight model is better in space, pretty good in atmo for big ships (some adjustment to be done to take off) but less good than before for small ships.
It's true ?

These both are only AAA sry for the bad comparison. But I have seen lately in spectrum comparisons for these games in relation to SC.

If you dont do combat, probably wont notice the oversteer.

And atmo is terrible for big ships, they can barely fly. Any ship that can barely fly should be denied landing at any ground based space port. You're not gonna let these giant things fly over your city if they are on the edge of falling out of the sky.

Hard to write anything sensible about SC. I bought the cheapest ship around 2 years ago just to get access. Updated SC and played it recently to see what has changed and can sum it up in two words - "very little". The thing I'm not getting is that it has been in active development for at least 7 years and raised more than $300 million and still not a playable game. Something doesn't add up and Roberts buying a $5.5 million house is just weird. ED started with something like $600k and was a mature game within 5 years and it is better than SC IMO. So if anyone really knows what the heck is going on with SC please share.

welcome to myself several years ago. Star Citizens development never matched up on its cost and timeframe. And taking a closer look in order to figure out why only revealed how serious and worrying it really is. Your short summary would ve earned you rabid personal attacks and being called all kinds of names in other places. Nobody really knows for certain and the few people who claim such knowledge are not free to share their sources which could prove their claims. All we have are rumors, signs and logical conclusion. Theres a whole laundry list of issues regarding Star Citizen and it helps to answer some questions surrounding the project but it might not be an answer you like.

Any kind of "short review" would be heavily biased depending on the person giving it so you probably wont be able to avoid a little effort to dig in yourself. No small task considering how much SC related material there is to sieve through. In combination with professional and private shills, fanatical fanboys and people with an agenda asking people questions wont do you much good I m afraid.

Personally I have given up on simply believing anything coming out of CIG or from people who seem to be almost eager to cram all kinds of information (all positive of course) down your throat. I go with evidence and hard proof rather then "benefit of the doubt" simply because the benefit of the doubt, once given freely has been abused way too often to being granted responsibly anymore.

Either way....welcome to the adventure that is Star Citizen. Not the game because its not a game yet but the development story which holds most of us glued to our screens for the past few years. Its the best free entertainment I ve ever stumbled upon ^^

DCS is really pretty. Will buy it.

Plot twist: base DCS is free, with a couple airplanes ("low-fidelity" Su-25 and demilitarised P-51) and the repimped Caucasus map, so try it out for free for a while to make sure that it is for you before spending anything. You pay for high-fidelity airplanes, maps, campaigns, and there's also a bunch of low-fidelity airplanes (Flaming Cliffs) that's cheap too. I recommend you spend a long time looking at the airplanes/helicopters available and ask around before commiting. Not all modules are created equal, and it's even worse with the Flaming Cliffs airplanes as they're also sold separately. We have a DCS thread here, there are forums on Steam, reddit has the r/hoggit forum, and there are also the official Eagle Dynamics forums if you don't mind their, errr, authoritarian tendencies.

Oh, and the stuff regularly goes on sale, so it's generally worth waiting for one to pick up modules, as they're on the expensive end.

Active development actually started in 2011, according to Chris Roberts himself, so that would make it not 7 but 9 years and counting.

As for what is going on, there is sadly too much to tread into, but this 3 article series at Kotaku would give you a good insight:

1 - "Inside the troubled development of Star Citizen"
2 - "The 24 years feud that has dogged Star Citizen"
3 - "Who are the Star Citizen superbackers?"

This will put you up to speed with things up to 2016 at least, but imo it still is a must read. It describes much of the core issues and problems in the development of SC that are still with us today.

More info about more recent aspects can also be found at Forbes
