Why I need a Clipper

And what to do with it. I have just finished the two Salome books about Elite by Drew Wagar. Reclamation and Premonition are both absolutely excellent. Huge respect to Drew for bringing alive the Elite universe, fleshing out the lore and background.

Problem is, our hero Salome is closely linked with her Imperial Clipper. But I've never bought this ship despite having the rank to do so - I was grinding for the Cutter.

Anyhow, what is the best way to use the Clipper? As an all purpose ship, like a Python or Krait? I've heard it excels at mining? Is it good at PvP?

If so could anyone suggest good builds?

And now I need to read more Elite fiction, but the bar has been set incredibly high!

Exploration was fun. It's a hoot to fly. Super agile in SC and out. Mining is good too. Funny too because I flew one and named it KT Salome. When engineered for light weight/ long range jumping? I got nearly 52ly out of it, so good for exploring.

I loved flying the Clipper, fast, and great handling in SC. But then I got enough credits for a Python.

Yeah Python is kind of the Must Own. It's the God ship. Does everything and you get paid more using it. Like passenger runs. Probably because it's all c5 and c6 modules and is faster to dock in than a large ship and is also medium pad capable.

Reading this thread has allowed me a small epiphany.

I like the Clipper because I do not measure my play experiance by cr/hr. I do things for fun.

It really makes a difference to how you view your ship roster.

And that is how you play. You have more fun that way. We could all use that lesson.

4x anti xeno multicannon on turrets and she eats scouts alive. Absolute blast to fly.

Past that, not much to say, its a large hull with small med internals. Fast and maneuverable but the hard points are so spread out you get no convergence w/o turrets or gimbals.

Think will try that on large points. I have all overcharged, but screening shell on large and corrosive and drag on mediums.

Edit : messed up post on editing, that was response to @Sir Ganksalot 's post about incendiary

Biggest downside of the thing is the large pad it needs.

Screening shell is kinda worthless to be honest. Incendiary can chew through shields much faster than screening shell can reload. And most NPC's still have pretty crappy thermal resistance.

I agree. Also the reload-desync with other secondaries is annoying, since often you fire the frags in salvo's of 3. Or I use double shot with screening shell on all frags, or on none of them.

i didn't realize that Incendiary still did Kinetic damage. i thought all damage was converted to Thermal.

what is the Damage ratio?

I get your point guys. And it makes sense. First all my frags were double shot, but due to bad piloting i would miss too much and run out of ammo too fast. Then i switched to overcharged, but left screening shell as effect.

Also I second this.
We all can make credits and mats to buy and engineer multiple ships, so I dont get people who are saying this is the best, you should fly this like that and if you don't, you 're noob.
For example, I have FDL, core internals all g5 and I dont know what to do with it. Just didn't find a role for it yet. And that' s like the best ship for shooting.
But found perfect role for Clipper and setting it up now.
So people will say there's better ships than Clipper , yet I enjoy flying my halfway engineered Clipper while my g5 engineered FDL is collecting dust in some hangar. Go figure...

Other than reducing the reload speed the only time the screening shell was useful for the screening effect itself was shooting another players remote flechettes out of the sky while shooting them in the face.

Anyways, fun fact: You can get a frag reload time down to .88 seconds with rapid fire and screening shell. Not terribly practical but is the occasional "hail of gunfire" fun.

A gimballed frag Clipper is the best way to fully utilize Clipper combat potential. A melee specialist excellent for causing mayhem in the systems. And if your target manages to survive frag cannon hailstorm just ram him to pieces and watch the debris. Don't bother with npc ship, start hunting cmdrs in barges... I mean Anacondas, they are usually very confident, but rarely live up to make that life saver hi-wake.

There are plenty of good uses for the Clipper. A mining ship. L-pad trader. Some cmdrs fly Clipper explorers. Before I got the Cutter I was doing trade CG's pilotting the Clipper. Some tried to interdict me, but they were unable to catch me and because of the speed Clipper is very good for trading in more dangerous regions of open mode.

Seconding this Clipper build. I ran into some gankers and griefers in my PS4 open for the first time and decided I’m gonna have to prepare for the possibility that not all CMDR’s are as moral and just as I imagine Aisling’s are, or something like that.

4 frag cannons and a barely engineered 7C bi-weave shield turned mine into a longhorn ram that spits bullets. The high speed and mobility was getting me in and out of sticky wickets with FDS’ and FGs’ in the first run-through in Res’

It's a thing of absolute beauty that I can never find a reason to fly because I can't land at half the stations I want to use due to them being outposts. It's ridiculous that there is still no Imperial medium ship when the Feds and Alliance have three each.

For OP's benefit, I will say that it's very fast. Like eye-bleedingly, stupidly fast with DD 5s.

Rumours that its weapons convergence allows you to hit targets in two separate systems with one salvo may be slightly exaggerated.

Note - since OP is unlikely to care since I've just noticed this is yet another pointless six month old necro, disregard this.
