Ships Any use for the dropship / Assault ship and gunship ?

I like theses ship cockpitwise , but cant seem to get some real role out of them. (Like the T10 :( )

I'm not looking for the BEST ship for his role , but at least some correct abilities.

Are some of you using them ?

Are you kidding me? The Assault Ship is one of the best combat ships in the game. It's my personal PvP ship of choice and it kicks @$$ and takes names.

The Gunship and Dropship, unfortunately, are really slow but can be great at PvE.
Putting all multicannons on a Gunship is pretty bad@$$

Yes. All :)

FAS and Gunship are combat exclusive ship. FAS has also some piracy potential. FDS can do everything besides exploring (short ranged and fuel hungry)
Before the Python I was doing a lot of work in FDS. This ship is quirky and has a character. Good internals, very strong hull, quite heavy and drifts - not as much as the Cutter though. Many pilots have problem with it, but learning a few tricks in fa/off can overcome the drift and use as your advantage which helps in making sharp turns and steady sideways drifts - perfect for railgun fire. I also used FDS with success in anti xeno combat against Cyclops.
Speaking of Gunship. Flies different than FDS, less drifiter yet slower. Less tanky and relies on slf. Some cmdrs use both FDS and Gunship with success in pvp. Personally I like having four railguns on FDS.
I bought the Gunship not that long ago, engineered and armed with 7 multi cannons. Didn't like it though, kinda boring and ammo dependable. Parked the ship, until I found this tread and reworked my Gunship inspired by cmdr Northpin build. Really liking this ship now. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/lasers-which-how-and-why.546173/page-2#post-8529220

Thx then I knew that FAS was very good , but the gun and dropship were a bit more difficult to role. I really like the exploration FAS tho =D Might try that :p .

Sir Eploralot !

Curious - whats with the Guardian module reinforcement? Is it better than standard for combat?

Dropship is awesome!

I murder my first set of wars in one... Large pulse laser, med MC's and just tore through bad guys :)
It's slow, non agile but just so much character!

I went exploring in one for a while, done mission running in one, heck even took it canyon running for the heck of it (who cared if I hit the planet, it would move if I did :) )

oh yeah also got my first Tharg kill in one kitted out with AX MC and rockets before the guardian stuffs. \o/

I use a federal gunship for planetary installation attacks. I loaded up all the hardpoints with nothing but dumbfire missile racks and It just blows everything up and the splash damage is so high it will usually destroy any skimmers in one or two hits. I left the two small hardpoints with a couple of fixed beam lasers to deal more precision attacks when needed or to help fight off any ships guarding the settlement. I doesnt even need very much engineering to. I dont use it much as missions for these are very rare now unfortunately.

Dropship is my favourite miner. Enough hardpoints for mining gear and still room for weapons. Mine has 88T of cargo space which is ideal as I don't get bored before the hold is full like I do in my Python/T9

I love the Dropship because it's the most stable FAoff PA platform I've ever flown.
Sadly it's outclassed by most combt ships, but I really like duelling in one.

In one aspect the FAS, Dropship and Gunship are some of the best advanced 'training' combat ships in the game. They each fly very different learning new skills and offering different load outs. The Gunship can add Ship Lunched Fighters trying them out for the first time and learning. Embrace them ignoring personal rules many decide playing the game. Some PvP players swear by them. After mastering them the learning curve is small going to more dedicated combat ships as in the Fer de Lance, Clipper in a PvP wing and the big three.

With easy credits, getting the rep and bypassing them getting one of the big three some PvP player who didn't bypass the training in a FAS will send a big three to the rebuy page. Then lots of rants on the Forum per, "How could this happen?". There are many. Getting the skills is so much more important than buying the ship. Unlike other games there is no boss monster at level 13 in ED.

Note when the Alliance Chieftain came out many experienced FAS pilots moved over to it. But that is for another thread and there are many.

So decide. Owning the ship with or without the skills to fly it? Good luck. Patience playing ED is your best weapon...

this thread made me want to revisit the FAS.

I had one a couple of months before the chieftain arrived. At the time I only had grade 3 thrusters and the thrusters on the FAS combined with the lackluster shields (compared to my beloved Vulture) felt abysmal. ThE lateral thrusters on the Chieftain felt better and the weapon placements seemed more flexible. I have been through all of the medium ships and keep fallong back to the Vulture and Chieftain (but somehow I don’t really care for the Chief). Looking at statistics the FAS seemed like a downgrade, especially with how I remembered the lackluster manouvering of it. I didn’t look back until now...

I suddenly remebered how different dirty drag drives felt on several medium ships when going from grade 3 to 5. On the chief and challenger almost all drift went away. Could it be the same with the FAS? Short answer YES!
Flying the FAS feels like the agility of the chief with the higher thrust performance of the challenger - meaning great pitch without stalling.
Like the challenger you can set thrust to 75% (above blue zone) and maintain higher speeds than most othe combatants. In my testing I only loose ½ s on a full 360 loop and the FAS doesn’t stall og drift! This is amazing.

the hardmpoint setup is optimal for me - even though the placement is something I need to adjust to.

I have always hated the ‘chieftain and Fed ships are hull tanks!’ Claims. Yeah they are optimal for that - but with guardion shield modules there are other builds possible.

my current setup:

It has the same shield level as my vulture with three times the armor backup and 2 extra medium hardpoint and almost the same agility.
I must say it feels perfect - just what I always wanted.
I tried her out yesterday in a HAZRES and quickly earned me 3mil and the last 15% to dangerous combat rank.
I’ve never felt so sure and secure taking deadly and elite groups of three alone before - even a group consisting of aFAS, krait and a gunships - all deadly or elite. My shields didn’t break until I was halfway through the armor on the last combatant.

this had me almost dumbstruck and I started to giggle - 4% hull damage and no damage to my modules.

I really enjoyed my return the the FAS - Yes, it definitively have a place in the game stilland I forsee that I’ll be using it for quite some time. The shadow operator color scheme (the dark and red schemed one) looks amazing with the entirior of the cockpit too and I actually like the look of the FAS too.

I use this shield tank FAS quite often:

After a while I started to often switch the SCB to an extra fuel tank though as I did not feel the SCB itself was needed anymore.
