Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

lol in a thread about understanding, dominated by you, you don't understand do you?
Spell it out for me. Because I honestly don't know what you think I lost.

You know, I'm a jolly third party observer here really. But Fisto doesn't strike me as bitter at all - if anything it seems more the opposite.

I'm not trying to start on you River, I'm just saying how it appears to someone reading this. You seem to be falling for a lot of trip-ups, although I have no idea if they are or not? It just seems like the bitter or angry person is throwing those claims about, not the other way around.

And the third quote above kinda illustrates my point.

I'm not trying to start on anyone here, I just thought it might help to see how things are appearing to others. You may want to call me anything you wish, and as far as I'm concerned, go nuts!! It makes no odds to me.

Anyway, I'll put my head back below the parapet now!

(Btw hope you don't mind my spelling your name Phisto, I just find it too funny ;) )

I think it was in response to the DG infiltration of PG that made them 'clarify' or 'tighten up' the TOS, but dont think anybody got banned from game for it if the former. No consequences, or not ones that mattered anyway. Its an open secret (see what I did there?) that Fdev will probably (almost certainly) reinstate your ship if you lose it in deep space, almost regardless of reason. This too was initially a response to DG and has become a bit of a comfort blanket. I choose not to use it. So Im not sure DG had any positive long term effect on the game.

I have the same vague recollection of this, it was a long time ago! But I don't remember anyone getting banned from it, I think it was more a token gesture kind of thing.

There were a couple of bans, actually, if I recall correctly. It also resulted in the soon-to-be total downfall of SDC

I have to admit that the last bit of discussion about BGS and whatnot have gone completely over my head.

As mentioned (quite) some time ago now, other than the BGS apparently being indirectly responsible for me becoming a ganker (imagine that), I still fail to connect how it or PowerPlay affect or directly influence my gameplay.

I login, I decide which of my ships I'm (still) trying to finish engineering on, and whether I'm in the mood to grind PVE massacre missions. If those options don't appeal, it's off to do some ganking in a system largely selected at random based on what's close to where the FC that is my home happens to be at the moment.

Often that means it's easiest to travel to a nearby engineer system or similar. I'm honestly still learning where these "player hotspots" are, and of course, I know that the BGS can have some influence over that (i.e. I could be using Inara to identify systems with good selling prices for various popular commodities). Maybe I'd in fact get more satisfaction from the game if I got more involved in the BGS or PowerPlay - maybe my ganking could serve some hypothetical higher purpose.

But first I'd have to be convinced that there was some reason to take the BGS and/or PP seriously. And so far, simply nothing has stuck in that regard. It feels like taking an oath to uphold a belief about something that you can't otherwise see or directly experience. Maybe I'm just too faithless a person for it to resonate with me. I genuinely don't know?

Anyways, if I could be convinced that BGS and/or PowerPlay mattered, it could be a neat thing to give my PVP efforts a focus. In the meantime, I suppose I really am roleplaying a wandering murderhobo.

Well.

Certain systems in certain states can increase the likelihood of tasty hauling ships with tasty diamonds aboard. Both of the hollow and solid variety. The hollow version can usually be tracked down just by looking at the highest prices for LTDs/Painite/whatever, or the lowest prices for Tritium. Sometimes, people work to put anarchist factions in charge of those systems so they can indulge in that gameplay without the fuzz getting all up in their business.

Unfortunately the ones I'm working on are way too much of a backwater as far as player traffic goes to be suitable for ganking. Well, unfortunately for you maybe, it certainly makes my job easier.

OK - and as a ganker, this next bit is absolutely delicious for me - but: Why?

Just to paint the map? Just to make some numbers change? Does it give you an in-game benefit of some kind?

I'm sincerely in appreciation of the fact that this sounds like trolling of the first order, but I genuinely do not understand the appeal.

It's as hard for me to understand player investment in the BGS as it is for many people to understand my choice to be a ganker.

I do not disrespect the choice - I just don't understand it. What do you get out of it?

i played this game for 5 years and tried everything except goids i had by far the best time on DG2 over any other thing i did in this game, i made friends and enemies and tbh i probably did more Ly's than 90% of the distant world tag alongs. 2700 player deaths later i am still playing, i cannot say that would be the case if i had not taken an alternative path. also @Vikestart it was pleasure parting you from your cargo, you nearly made it.

I considered task killing the game, but that would have been cowardly. Though you would have deserved it.

Anyway, congratulations on making me a Solo player (when doing anything important) 😊

Must have felt nice making someone have wasted 2 hours.

Or Thargoids, or CQC..I think thats it.

They dont. unless you want them too, no more than a new variant of Gas Giant in a far away nebula affects your game directly. Elite and its successors are a new breed, its hard to explain but a personal storyline would probably kill ED as it would be have a beginning, middle and end and a, yuck, endgame.

Sandro said something about different people wanting different mutually exclusive gamestyles and both were valid.

But long before that theres an old documentary (1984, 1985 ish, sure it was 80s) about Elite and the development of the game. Its presented by John Snow (if you werent confused before you sure are now) and if you watch it and get the whole thing about why Elite was such a success, why it was so different, what the publishers said and why they didnt get the publishing deal it may make more sense. Its definitely on YT. ED is elite updated, not the new Fortnite or trying to be SC or MSFS or anything else.

well you made the right choice by not task killing because that would indeed make you a cheater . all for a few bits of digital wealth,so
i respect you for that. Maybe solo is for you if thats how you feel. I have been where you are i promise you, just my response was different.
