Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

Stream is very boring so far.
FD want us to feel a sense of wonder stepping out on a planet.
Achieved, in many parts of the game.
But that is pretty much it.
No new details 45 minutes into this.
And the Dev Diary skips around so much, it is very, very surface.
No deep developer commentary on how the planets are rendered (since that is the lead in I would think they would be proud to talk a bit more about that) new flight mechanics due to light atmospheres, if any, etc. So much that could get into cool detail.

How about some gritty details and answering the hottest questions even mentioning what may come later to avoid spoilers and work with their plan, whatever that is?

I love ED, huge respect for the developers. But the marketing is beyond me, past them just posting cool trailers. Befuddled by FD as normal of late.

Maybe this is partly due to the announcement trailer being prematurely released?

Oh well, will try to tune out until mid-September.
I would hazard a guess that's it probably pretty difficult to do that stuff while they are all working from home.

This can be perfectly conveyed on a 2D screen. No need for VR for that.

It really can’t though. Not in the same way that VR can. It is a completely different level of immersion. May I ask how much playtime in VR you have?

I have already discussed one of the better examples of this: Skyrim. Playing Skyrim on a regular monitor was amazing and I felt I was really in the game. Then I got my first VR headset in an original Vive and the experience of SkyrimVR just blew flatscreen Skyrim completely out of the water.

So it's starting to look like we have not only waited all this time, but we still won't get the whole thing in one go when it does arrive.

and what would be the "whole thing"?
They never released a list of the content included into the expansion and the only information we had was the leak that didn't mention atmospheric planets.

ha, that leak seems a lifetime ago.

I'm pretty happy with what we appear to be getting tbh. And I imagine fdev are keeping lots of good stuff to be revealed in the months to come ...

My great fear, the one that keeps me up at night, is that on the day Odyssey launches, I quickly install the expansion, boot it up with barely contained excitement, and see this:

So yeah: for those with short attention spans, patience, or pressed for time, here's all you need to know:

At launch, no VR and no walking around ships...but both topics are in the "Working on it" bin.

Noooooo!
well, that’s me out already.
I really hoped they’d add interiors with fun meaningful gameplay and seamless exit/entrance via ramp and airlock.

This is so very, very disappointing...again.
Fool me once, etc.

While the video exhibited quite a bit of aliasing on the environment, I am really eager to see what the improved (...whilst hopefully not hopelessly performance-draining...) terrain LOD detail is like! ...because the current fuzzy state is a long standing bugbear of mine, especially since I play in VR, where 100 degrees of field of view is not compressed into 40 or less, the way it becomes on a monitor (unless you sit really close). :7

Absolutely flabberghasted that such things as atmospheric influence on the flight model, vehicle-to-foot transitions, and making use of upcoming generation console hardware resources are supposedly matters undecided and/or deferred to post-launch, this late in development... I guess that last at least means hardware demands should probably not have increased too drastically, unless one have simply decided that a significant drop in frame rate is acceptable... :7

Heh, must say the air of finality that comes with the words: "promise fulfiled", jarred me each time they were used; Sounding more like: "We're ticking the "legs" box here: Done, dusted, and never brought to mind again", than: "First step about to be taken - now let's build on this". :p

Looking at that SRV climbing a snowy slope, I wonder if the ground surface it still rather flat, with some normal maps to go with the textures, or if there could be any chance at all it might have smaller scale geometric detail, tesselation with heightmap offsets, or parallax mapping... (I suppose that is partly the VR player in me speaking again; The flatness is not quite so apparent/annoying without depth perception). :p
