Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

I worry about bio/solar body diversity. As it currently stands, the planets/moons/stars become repetitive after a while; you come across an ELW and you have pretty much seen them all (apart from the occasional ring around some). Its the same with biological encounters, the plants/trees are pretty much the same as those you've seen on other planets/moons 50,000ly away. I fear EDO will bring not much more, only now you have a scan gun to place scans into your CODEX. Is this all the scan gun thing can do? i wonder.. Why can't it take samples you can combine with other bio stuff to create something?

And the emphasis on light atmosphere concerns me!! Because that means to me that all they've done is added some atmosphere to some minor moons/planets which won't really add very much

Only time will tell, i suppose...

For the record Odyssey does looks stunning, just what it is. But this is stuff we should have had three years ago or so, with walking on ships and actual planets (elws) by now. We're nearly SIX YEARS into development. We had year 1, which was good, Horizons, which came slower than I'd have liked and Beyond, which was basically QoL and updates. I knew coming into this game this'd be a long haul, but after six years from launch, I expected we'd be far deeper into the wish-list than we are.

This is why we feel abandoned. Development is obviously taking longer than we'd hoped back in 2012/13.

That's exactly my worry. Exploration does get repetitive by the time you've reached the center of the galaxy, and any patience to go further only goes rapidly downhill from there. And yeah, not sure how far they're willing to go for us to land on Earth outright...which would be a treat by any stretch of the imagination.

Anyone else noticed that the ship isn't locked into one direction before jumping to another system in the video at 0:24?

that's a 2 second clip. the hype is working ;)

the ship slowly starts to auto align at the very end of those 2 seconds as the shot changes. a regular jump, nothing to see here, dig on! :p

On some of the in-flight shots, the PoV pans across the cockpit view slightly. I wonder if that is headlook or VR capture. Also, I wonder if the updates to the engine to support atmospheres include upgrades to the lighting engine to support multiple light sources and other celestial effects (oblate stars, "lumpy" supergiants, accretion disks, etc.)

I agree but a comment saying we know it is not at launch but it will be included later in the year would go a long way to help.
Help shut the VR crowd down. There is a time and place for everything. Not a VR Vendetta each time this topic comes up. The official word is not at launch. It does not mean EVER. So get real you minority group and forget about your crusade.

I'm excited for the updates to planetary surfaces.
I'm excited for new planets to land on.
I'm excited for light atmospheres.

I still don't get space legs, at least not in the current iteration and not compared to so many other, more foundational enhancements to the existing game play. We could experience most of what's being pitched with space legs with the SRV already (and it would work with VR!). It would have been cheaper and faster to ship these updates with an updated SRV model.

I'd much rather see Community Goals, GalNet, fixed and enhanced multicrew, new missions, increased interactions with the background simulation, more accurate star models (accretion disks) or solar systems in various stages of development (protoplanets), updates to the Thargoid war, etc.

I love Elite. It's one of my favorite games of all times, but sometimes I really don't understand FDev (and this comes as someone who is a game developer and understands many of the issues at hand). There's a vibrant community creating a really amazing amount of content and it often feels like FDev is running the Elite game with a skeleton crew. There's even plenty of decent monetization options (and no, that doesn't mean selling ships) if they needed more revenue to fund the game.

Please, let them continue. One, if its something they feel passionate about in the game then its cool, and two they make me look sane and reasonable! Kinder Egg deal.

l, and two they make me look sane and reasonable!
I wouldn't go that far ;)
One thing I would be interested to know. AFAIK (correct me if I am wrong) PC ED:O is steam only. Does that mean people who bought horizons on other store fronts will all get a free horizons key (I think it is just the Oculus store) or will the game just not get the expansion for those players (or they have to buy horizons again) which seems harsh.
(That is assuming the expansion is cheaper for those with horizons of course, it's a non issue if it is a flat rate regardless of if you own horizons or not).

Its not Steam only unless you have a firm dev source- I think that stemmed from lack of info during the previous beta I think.

Nope, not Steam only; it still launches the game launcher so nothing changes. They wanted us to wishlist it ON Steam, as it's a obvious place to advertise. Otherwise, business as usual there.

No, no Dev source but I don't see how the oculus version can get the expansion as it is a VR only store front.
I haven't checked the last few weeks but last I looked there was no warning on the store that you would be buying a version whi hbwas about to stop getting updates which is pretty wrobg of oculus. I did send them a message asking for them to make it clear on their store months ago but surprisingly ;) they didn't respond.

Edit... AHH ok I just checked it seems they have added the following

(Important note: This purchase will grant you access to the Commander Deluxe Edition. If you already own this game and you're redeeming a key for the VR version, you'll be able to access whichever expansions are already linked to your Frontier account, such as Horizons or Arena.)

So I guess then that could mean you log in through frontier and buy the expansion there if I am reading it correctly. It's still not that clear however. (Or maybe I a thick)

It stemmed from Odyssey being wishlist-able on Steam when it was revealed - some people leaped to the conclusion that it meant EDO would only be available on Steam 🤷‍♂️
