Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

That happens if you interrupt the download and resume it later.

After the interrupt/resume, it started at 0/30.7, then increased normally to ~4GiB. Then I went for dinner and now it sits at, allegedly, 38.55GiB. Asobo and BlackShark might have done a lot of the work, but you can smell the Microsoft touch from miles away. :ROFLMAO:

To give you a better idea of what a patchwork quilt based on the Orkney islands looks like...maybe there's some magic settings option to get rid of it. I've cached the whole of the islands so it's not that. But...the infernal flashing as the tiles draw in in varying shades as you fly along is pretty horrendous. If anyone is a bit wiser as to what's happening there, please...do tell before I bin the thing.
............
What are your GRAPHICS settings set at for various elements, try bumping a few up and see if you get away with the frame rate hit... It may be using a generic setting at certain levels to reduce strain on graphics... Although my video was at dusk, I didn't notice this, I can go up and take another look! ;)
Ok, that's pretty shocking. 😂

But at that point, it has to be a bug somewhere, you can clearly distinguish the checkerboard pattern.

I just did a quick flight out of Kirkwall (had to visit the source of my uisge-beatha at the Highland Park distillery*) - meandering about it looked really weird, as if it was swapping in-and-out two different sets of photo tiles - the same details were in the tiles but the image had different hue etc - almost like one set was from a dry summer and the next was from a normal damp autumn. I had set the sim to mid-July and mid-day so it can't have been mixing-up seasons. Not seeing that effect over Outer Hebrides, Great Glen, glesgey or auld reekie though - enough other issues, poor mesh, lousy autogen, no castle, etc etc.

* - No I couldn't make out the distillery - so I just had to make do with a dash in my coffee.

Do you live on a boat @Para Handy ?

Despite the launch glitches... Boy, this is relaxing stuff. Threw on some Popol Vuh, and can pretty much hear Werner Herzog spouting goofy voiceover commentary over the landscapes. Roll on VR support and another "ten year plan!"

Glad it isn't just me then, that's exactly what I'm getting...tried a few other places I've lived and I know well...Uist north and south...none of that tiling over there in Na h-Eileanan Siar, must just be Orkney. :cautious:

Apart from that, massively disappointed with Orkney scenery...looks like a badly stitched duvet cover even at Ultra settings. Perhaps if I moved to a city then flew over my house I'd be more impressed...right now with the way it looks, I'm tempted to uninstall it.
What's your area look like using Bing Maps? It seems MSFS uses Bing Map data, and the maps for my area are pretty rubbish in spots (clouds covering things, sections alternating between summer and winter, etc). Google and Apple maps are way better for my neck of the woods, but we know Microsoft won't be switching to them.

Bing maps looks fine...it's just the flight sim that's burgered...

I took a walk down my road, and I realized that I wouldn't need to make custom houses to really fix up the place to be more realistic. All I would need to do is be able to tell the autogen "This is a gray garage, this is a blue house, this is a white church, this is a grocery store" and let MSFS use its default autogen assets for these. That would make a HUGE difference and would be easy-peasy for me to do for much of my town. I wonder if there is any way to do this.... Any developers in the crowd?

I hope they're cheap...
Compared to the states...even mainland UK... the properties are dirt cheap. A 15 acre croft will set you back just north of £85k ($111k US). You can't buy a one bedroom flat in the south of England for that.

Just noticed that I'm downloading an update...maybe they've fixed Orkney? We live in hope....wait...it looks like it's downloading the whole 91Gb again...if it is, It's headed for the recycle bin :cautious:

It was indeed downloading the entire 91Gb again...cancelled and uninstalled. Microsoft, you've got a lot to learn about trying folks patience.

Been playing with it since yesterday. I was a bit concerned when it was recommended that I run in 'Ultra' graphics mode, but it seems to work just fine. Quite smooth actually. I have found a few bugs that are already known (trim, etc.), but other than my having to go online to figure out how to get my VKB pedals to work I'm making progress. I do miss flying my A2A P-51D around though. :(

I'll probably be bouncing back and for for a while.

I took a little trip over Detroit, MI. I used to live there, once upon a time. The tall downtown buildings were badly formed, with gaps and odd angles. It almost looked bombed out! But it was still pretty cool to fly over it.

The drone camera thingy is cool.

Some of the in-cockpit gauges are nearly impossible to see.

External camera is fun.

Auto pilot works pretty good.

Went to jump in tonight just as the sun was setting to catch the view and Im getting errors whenever I try to start the app, maybe I'll reinstall before bed.

For me, so far so good... :)

Done a handful of flights, getting used to the controls (struggling a bit with the trim) and just adding to my mappings, one or two things at a time. Otherwise I think it can be a bit overwhelming trying to get everything set up at once.

I do agree with Codger that some of the cockpit instruments can be difficult to see well, but I imagine there may well be settings that I can tweak to make that better, particularly when it comes to lighting, as much of the time it just feels as though they are bit dark. Old eyes and all that. 😎

As far as scenery goes, certainly around where I live (which has been the majority of flights) it's really pretty good. All the lakes are where they should be, and the ski areas are spot on. :D I can even clearly see the patch of sand at the end of the runway that I often ride my mountain bike across going to or coming from rides.

Many buildings seem to be generic, including the airport, but that doesn't bother me too much, at least not at this point. I'd not expect them to do much more for the smallish city / town where I live, but to be sure, it's absolutely recognizable.

Very happy with it so far, and hoping I've got the hang of it and all my mappings sorted for when they add VR... :)

I have found a few bugs that are already known (trim, etc.),

Oooh, what's that? Maybe it's not just me... :p
