VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

I'm very suprised by the number of VR players not aware of the lack of VR support for Odyssey.
Really, I still read a lot of posts, especially on reddit, where people comment the last Odyssey video saying "woah that will be awesome in VR"...

What’s the ratio of buyers/readers/commenters that I’ve seen in the past? Something like, of 100% of the game owners 10% will read the forums and only 2% will actually make comments?

Although I’d expect VR owners to be a bit more savvy & enthusiast than average and thus be more engaged with online information, I still expect there’ll be some very disappointed headset owners come EDO release...

(...unless there’s an 11th hour reprieve, of course 🙂)

I'm not especially surprised. I don't think a lot of ED players actually come to this forum and stay .. I drift in and out myself ... to be blunt ... its possibly the most hostile, unwelcoming gaming forum I have ever encountered. I have 4 other friends that all play ED in VR and none of them ever visit the forum or comment on VR in ED. None of them would have known VR wasn't supported in ED until I told them.

The Yamiks posted a video containing a written interview with somebody and FD saying that Xbox and PS won't be available at launch either. What does FD think they are doing. If you are interested the video is on Ytube.

Nope. Just to be clear, it's not about PS and XBox support per se. It's about PS5 and XBox X Series X Edition X (or whatever).

Exigeous excellent video hits the nail on the head how I feel about Odyssey and my future with ED.
“Planets with seas and basins...maybe seeing liquid water on some surfaces” - looks like Dr Ross has claimed another victim! Perhaps she should have said maria, or lunar-like seas. (Edit: she does actually say, “seas, basins, like on the moon” but looks like folk are missing the last bit)

Also, he calls into question walking around on airless worlds, while using a picture in his video that seems to show exactly that?

Still, hopefully it’ll let a few more headset users know that there may be a grim future for VREDO.

169 pages of whining? No. FD tuned out at page 2.
To many of the players "whining" FD may as well be turning the servers off if they don't release vr support.
I imagine non VR players would whine quite loudly if ED:O went VR only..... But to me at least ED dropping VR is that big a deal. Yes I COULD play on a monitor. But equally I could play it at 640x480 with CGA visuals... It doesn't mean I would want to if FD decided to only support that for ED:O

Besides a large percentage of posts in this thread has been responding to non VR players telling VR users how impossible it is to have FPS feet in VR and other nonsense

That said I agree. I don't think FD are reading this thread any more

After 169 pages it makes sense maybe to make a resume of what's happening here:

  1. FDEV release Odyssey trailer and the community is in awe. Someone noticed btw that on the Odyssey Steam preview page the VR support is missing.
  2. VR players start wondering if it was just forgotten and ask FDEV a feedback about this topic.
  3. FDEV replies saying that VR won't be supported at launch for Odyssey. They have some concerns how to make it work properly so at the moment they have no official plan nor roadmap for its integration into the game. VR will still be available for the base game and Horizons.
  4. VR players are confused: will VR not supported at all or it will still be available in ships and srv's since it's already supported and it would not require additional development? If this is the case what type of transition will allow to switch from VR cockpits to Flat Screen for spacelegs?
  5. @Alec Turner writes an e-mail to FDEV asking clarification to understand what we should expect and how this transition will eventually be handled in the game.
  6. FDEV replies saying that it is safe to assume that VR will not be supported at all by Odyssey at launch. So the VR headsets will be disabled by launching the Odyssey option from the game launcher.
  7. So the only option to play Odyssey and VR is currently to fly ships in Horizons and when you reach the orbit of your destination planet you quit the game, remove your VR headset and restart the game with Odyssey option.

At this point what many VR players are asking to FDEV can be summarized in the following 3 options:
  • Leave VR compatibiliy inside SRV's and SHIPS only. The moment you disembark and you are on legs a message appears in your headset saying to remove it and to continue playing the game on the regular display.
  • Same as before, but instead of removing the headset, the 3D environment is disabled and the game switches to Theater Mode, so the game is shown on a flat screen inside the VR environment.
  • Experimental VR Branch: FDEV should leave VR in the game as is without any dedicated feature. The game will not be optimized and might have some issue but since it's tagged under "experimental" the user is informed that he/she has to expect some instability. More details HERE

Influence on NON-VR PLAYERS:
NONE!

VR players in this thread are:
  • NOT asking to delay the Odyssey release to implement VR.
  • Perfectly fine if VR will be integrated in the game in a timeframe between 6 to 12 months after Odyssey launch and we expect some feedback from FDEV about this.
  • Aware of the additional effort required to implement a smooth FPS/EVA experience and do not expect the same quality level of Alyx (as an example).
  • Partially disappointed and costructive and partially angry as hell. We're not all the same and we have different reactions and opinions but we all agree that VR is a core feature of the game and FDEV should actively continue the development of the game keeping that in mind.
  • United against people that mock the lack of VR complains so think twice before posting nonsense.
  • Willing to share their passion and to help other people to discover the mind-blowing experience of playing this game in VR.

Excellent summation, worth posting - thanks for this!

the game switches to Theater Mode, so the game is shown on a flat screen inside the VR environment.
Curved screen! Curved screen!
Even Bethesda managed to do that with with Fallouts opening video - unlike Elite Dangerous' apparently impossible to change flat market screen (one of the screens in the station menu) where all the other screens were curved.

Other than that, nice summary. Coming up on 200 pages and still nothing from Fdev. That's community management right there!
