Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Complete nonsense I'm afraid my dear Mole.

We've been given delivered progression to span the very heavens themselves! The Morrow Tour, Bartenders, Penguins, Turtles, Alien Languages, Prison, Nearly One System! Lots and lots of ships! Land sales! Server meshing! Netcode! There's elevator gameplay! And who could possibly forget the joyful dread at being overwhelmed in the dark majesty of their first Sandwurmie encounter in the unexplored wilds of the Leir system, with nothing but a pair of bunny ears to protect them!

There's been more AAAAAAAAA^A^A gameplay experienced in just those brief moments, than in all other gaming titles combined since the beginning of time.
I had a very strange discussion with one of the usual SC Kool-Aid drinkers the other day...regarding length of development time and development cost. He made the usual mistake of trying to equate the Star Citizen/Sqn 54 clusterfarce with the usual list of titles...

"Witcher 3..." he said

"Been playing it for 5 years I replied...since it's a very successful released title.. on consoles and PC."

"Ahh, but GTA V took x years and X millions..." he countered

"Been playing that for 5 years too, both on console and PC...since they released it 5 years ago..."

"RDR2 then." He suggested..."Now that took a long time and a load of money..."

"I've been playing that one for 2 years already, both on console and PC...Did you know it made Rockstar over $880m during the first weekend of it's release?" I reminded him.."They also used zero funds from backers to get it to release state.."

"Well then, everyone keeps on about CDPR and CP 2077...but they've been building that for the same length of time as Star Citizen has been developed...and it's delayed too."

"It's been delayed a year so far...but you'll notice CDPR released a 45 minute playable demo to the gaming media during that time so they could legitimately review what they'd seen. Not a hands off dreams.txt video with Sandwurmies...they actually played it...as well as reviewed it. Just in case you doubt how much CP2077 will add to CDPR's aready stellar and trusted reputation as game developers...or even add to their quite comfortably filled coffers when it does release...on multiple platforms... in November...I'll remind you that CDPR also used zero backers funds to get to this point."

"CP2077 isn't a multiplayer game...plus Ci¬G are developing 2 separate games at the same time..."

"Ahh...but GTA V and GTA V online are 2 separate games set in the same gameworld...as are RDR2 and RDR2 online...so that's 4 very successful and separate games that Rockstar have actually released in the same time period it's taken Ci¬G to mess up 1 project with 2 parts...impressive."

And there is this certain other company that released a functioning space game with full game loops in 2014 and has been steadily increasing its scope, all while players are playing it as a released game. They've also released two other games and are now publishing two additional ones. That particular example might really rile them up. :)

I accidentally had a bit of a trawl after looking for a quote.

Whatever happened to all these - helpfully posted by our dear Ecity ages ago?

Hah, well played sir.

When a backer is really desperate to show how much there is to do in SC.

Yeah, just mining (by hand, ground vehicle, or spacecraft), finding and selling valuable harvestables, deliveries, commodity trading, PVE dogfighting / bounty hunting, PVP dogfighting / bounty hunting, spelunking, prison breaks, prison defense, boxing, crimestat hacking assistance, crimestat hacking prevention, black box recovery, investigations, general PVE FPS combat, general PVP FPS combat, general PVP dogfighting, piracy, drug-running, racing, combat assistance service beacons (player or NPC), travel service beacons (player), comm satellite hacking, comm satellite recovery / defense, various bespoke assignments from 7 mission NPCs, exploring points of interest, shopping for food / drinks / clothing / armor / weapons / utility items / spaceships / components, roleplaying, participating in prearranged combat operations, manning a turret / crewing a ship, and general shenanigans with friends.

Oh, yeah, and taking pretty screenshots.

EDIT - This is just a list of everything that popped into my head that is possible to do in-game for entertainment. Yes, some things overlap, some things are similar, some things are buggy. Point is that there's quite a bit more than just mining and delivering boxes and taking screenshots. It's far from a complete game and there's much more that CIG needs to deliver, but we should still paint the entire picture.

More content in a single crater than in the whole of Skyrim!

Yup. Definitely going to happen. Weeks not months. Just buy more ships.
Don't be so mean, there's progress: few months ago it would have been written using the present tense. Though sure should, would, could, perhaps, hopefully, we hope to, fingers crossed... would have been better for fideliciousity.

7 months of progress that is what happened :) They were refactored/redesigned/reimagined/eaten by the sandworm (delete as appropriate) to become:

Roadmap August 28-2.jpg

That does raise an interesting point though ... What are the plans for 4.0 now it is nowhere to be seen on the roadmap?

Indeed, 4.0 should provide a second system! A milestone moment!

They just need to finish the magical tech that will allow them to add more systems. Once that is in place i'm sure they will be able to pump out a new system every few.... years?

Wow, it's so anaemic. The result of 3-6 months work at a cost of $15M - $30M. It's such poor value.

Yeah, i'll take that with a pinch of salt.

I doubt any sort of investigation that could happen here would cause them all to dissapear like that, unless things are even shadier than any of us suspect.

I'm sticking with the investors having something to do with it.

True wrt several large grains of salt, but if the investors, say, brought in external auditors would that count as an investigation?

Not the same as law enforcement, sure, but if they find any shenanigans the board could be in a LOT of trouble.
