Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

 Hmm......very interesting. 😆
It's a very good source of g4 raw materials (those are the highest grade raw mats, there's no g5 for raw)

It's also one the worst, most tedious, most boring things I've ever done in nearly 40 years of videogaming.

And I've done it twice in as many months.

Salt for the salt god, indeed!

:) Well, I can at least appreciate your dedication to it. While I ain't even trying to consider it though, I can see the potential of the idea of farms considering the Odyssey update. The only way I'd do it is if it brings me an exorbitant amount of cash. All that hard work and patience better pay off in a big way.

Oh... it does. It does!

Have you ever farmed geo sites in a sidewinder?

To be fair, the gospel that Colonia Jesus spreads is not his own; it is the word of Lord Braben. Colonia Jesus is merely his messenger.

Book of Cow, 13:37
The rebuy must flow, for this game desperately needs a gold sink, and making things go wrong for other people is, verily, what helps constitute the richness of the Elite tradition.
🙏 Amen

I just played with a Krait Mk2 fixed frag setup on Coriolis, after looking at that number above and thinking "that can't be right Shirley". All OC/Oversized I'm getting 1,900+ DamagePerSsecond. Range 2km with a damage drop-off of 1.8km. There are lasers with lower drop off, and we're talking the equivalent of a space shotgun i.e. low range high impact weaponry.

Am I missing something here? If (and yes, that's the big "if") I manage to land hits on a ship with say 3,800 shields from 1.7km distance, twice, that's their shields down? My 3000hp shieldless Viper 4 that I thought was pretty sturdy will last less than two direct hits?

So, to slightly exaggerate the situation, I'm bringing a knife to a gunfight if I don't equip all my combat ships with an all-frag loadout, given many of them run shield-tanks stacked with SCBs, so by the time I get their shields down even just one ring (using non-frag weaponry) they have mine dropped already if time-on-target is largely the same between us?

Absolutely appalling balancing there by FDev. No wonder I see them so often often these days - and I realised they were OP'd but not by just how much. Wow.

At least that would explain why that Krait ravaged my Corvette's Prismos so quickly (which have decent resistances all round, but then it'll just take an extra shot)... and also makes me conclude that if I see a hollow triangle stacked with frags that means 'don't even bother to engage'.

Even greater DPS can be achieved using Double Shot and oversized experimental...
Which is what I use on my builds, sans oversized (am using various other experimentals) - and I did chuckle to myself before how quickly NPCs vanish with that loadout, I just don't find frags that much fun in practice but that's a personal preference.

It's just when you see the actual numbers, which I never bothered checking before, and knowing my shield/armour values for my ships, some of which I was quite happy with in terms of defensive capabilities, and some of which are actually supposed to be able to push back when it comes to PvP, then yeah... puts things into perspective, and it's just stupid really.

I always thought double shot/screening shell was the DPS winner, because of the the 2.5 sec reload speed gain of screening shell. Oversized will still make you wait 5 seconds before you can fire the next salvo.

Or did you mean raw damage instead of DPS?
Raw - too early in the morning for me to make sense yet 😹

That raw damage does depend on all pellets hitting the target, though - any real distance between ships and a portion will miss...
My observation is in PvE, naturally (and also that I have an annoying tendency to fire too soon with frags...) ;)

If you fire on a viper4 at 1.7km, even if you're dead on target, the vast majority of the pellets will go wide. The on-paper DPS of frags is a lot higher than they tend to be in reality.

Plapping them at point-blank into something so huge you couldn't possibly miss (like, say, an unengineered, unarmoured exploraconda) on the other hand...

Ah yeah, and that's why I included the caveat in my earlier post, but it basically means engaging in large ships, even if they have obscene healthpools, is essentially futile due to their low speed and large hitboxes that are impossible to miss - which wouldn't be as big a problem if the DPS number wouldn't be so obscenely high.

Oh yikes, I just tried in EDSY replacing the multicannons in my FdL with frags. Why was I not informed? Trying this is on my to-do list now. :)

The main use of that FdL is "Pirate Lord" missions. They usually turn out to be Corvettes these days.
