Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

You have established it. I have established it's really fun !
Not really, no.

Chris Roberts said:
“During the technical prototype stage, we try to have the fewest number of people as possible workin on a game so the vision will remain concentrated and consistent,” he says. “Those guys spend about a year to get to technical prototype, and once we hit technical prototype and have proof of concept and a game looks like it's going to be fun, we finish up the project the following year, and that's when we bring in four or five more people.”

Roberts says that proving the game concept and technology allows them to avoid potentially costly mistakes. ”At lot of times, you'll hear of software projects that have gone on for two or three years, and racked up a cost of six or seven million dollars, and it comes to the point where company simply has to release the game in order to make some of that investment back. That's one of the reasons we try to keep the teams small in the early stages, that way if you take a look at you can say ‘ok, we can junk it,’ and we haven't invested too much money in it.”
Huh, they should put that guy on charge of this project rather than the incompetent pre-schoolers running it at this point. Imagine how much cleverer and better he'd be at software development now, 23 years later!

Yes. Me, my friends, the corpo I play with, and a lot of other testers I've met in the alpha, we have 'established' that the alpha is fun. I put this word between quote because no-one can 'establish' that something is fun or not. It's personnal, nothing more. I can't see how you can 'establish' SC is not fun while precisely a lot of people have fun with it 😒
Say SC is not fun for almost everyone here if you want, nothing more.

Now you're getting it.
The next step is for you to make the pretty obvious deduction that “fun” is a wholly worthless description for the game. It says something about you, nothing else. It is wholly inapplicable to anything that isn't you.

Say SC is not fun for almost everyone here if you want, nothing more.
No, because that's equally useless. Instead, I will say that it is objectively bad by pretty much any standard and any set of criteria you could apply to it.

This is one of the things I don't get. Why on earth would you pay to test someone's project. Normally people get paid to test software or perhaps volunteer. But pay to do so? Sorry, that's completely beyond me.

Edit: changed to correct tense

The simple answer here is: then don’t

Let's see SC take its talents to Steam. Do a free play like other MMOs. I'm sure Steam users will be very understanding of $100+ space ships in an MMO where the ships are more numerous than places to visit with them.
Also the ratio of combat designed/PvP ships vastly outnumber the non combat (trader/miner/expoloration/scout etc) ones. Well, at least according to a drunken analysis FTP did on SC ships in the 'Verse a while back

Sounds like a plan 😀. Thanks. I hadn't realised the free fly was still on.
If you do get on the freefly, look me up in the contacts list and add me. I'm just plain 'Mole' in SC...It's always better to have someone show you around who is a tad cynical and realistic ;)

Don't get me wrong, there are good bits and sometimes, the forever subjective 'fun' to be had. I had some newbies in tow tonight showing them how to mine with a ROC...advised them to just buy it in game rather than splurge the cash in the store. I reminded them they can support the project just as well by playing with nothing more than a starter package...leave the buying of ships to when Ci¬G prove they can actually get closer to releasing a game.

If you're so pig headedly cynical that you continue to lambast everyone and their dog on what are purely personal tastes, why not put on a pair of man-pants and try the freefly yourself instead of just rattling a few keys every time someone offends your delicate sensibilities by mentioning one totally subjective word?...Then perhaps you can objectively give us all the benefit of your wisdom and newly discovered insight as to exactly what the definition of 'not fun' actually is... and just maybe...I'll start taking note of you (and others) when you cry foul every time someone mentions the word 'fun' :D

I had 'fun' in SC tonight with a few freefly newbies...they weren't the gullible types everyone around here seems to tar and feather as typical SC tryouts. Three of them are long term Elite players who decided for themselves to see what all the shouting is about. They professed to having some subjective 'fun' too over the last couple of days and besides the bugs, enjoyed their brief Star Citizen experience as something different...as much as none of them will be buying in once the freefly is over after an in depth Q&A session with me...which is good, no? ;)

No thanks. Been there done that, and my wisdom as to what is fun and not fun is as information-free as everyone else's.

That makes your guidance good, which also says very little about the game. Now, their decision not to buy in might, but that would still require a bit more insight into what went into that judgement..

Support not needed as CR already got way more cash than he said he needed and has enough in reserve to finish if funding dries up?

I wouldn't suggest anyone give more money to CR to burn or buy another mansion, special edition sports car or another cook, maid, whatever. All money goes to develop the game, not.

CR thinks it is already released and anyone logging in accepts the terms that CI has zero obligation to deliver anything. CR thinks SC already has "more content than AAA games" because it has entire planets you can fly around.

Err...it's a free fly event. No cash required. Outside of that, if anyone buys in to Star Citizen after talking to me for half an hour...there's no accounting for gullibility ;)

My guidance is purely subjective...as always. I'd never recommend anyone giving Ci¬G anything, not even the $45 for a starter package...they quite simply don't deserve the cash based solely on what they've produced. But then again, I've been supporting the project as well as playing what they've produced long enough to make that informed judgement. Unfortunately, most of the newbies I meet have already spent that $45 based on nothing more than a few hours when the wow factor is still fresh...

A few Elite players have appeared in recent days, some of them in anticipation of Odyssey and the space legs. SC is one of the few experiences where they can discern some reasonably comparitive gameplay with 'what might be' when Odyssey does appear. My advice to them is just to wait and see what FDev come up with...it'll certainly be more complete than anything Ci¬G can come up with in the time period, whether it'll scratch the space leg itch the same way that SC does...I'm in the dark as much as everyone else.

I've said it before... but walking up the ramp or taking the elevator up to your ship, winding your way past the cargo on the way to the cockpit never gets old for me...it's not the FPS, not the space pew, but just being a moving part inside... and outside... of your ship makes a world of difference...for me ;)

If you do take the jump please give us an honest review. If you think it was awesome I ll take your word for it but I hope it ll be more then a one-liner ^^

Maybe that drives the point home how "worthless" the statement really is.

Welcome to the new decade. Are you old or something? I get where you are coming from but times have changed my dude. Letting the testers pay for the privilege is common today and also embraced. Lots of people pay through the nose for the opportunity to slave away for a company for free. I also dont get it but I accept it as a reality I cannot change.

INFIDEL! The faithful will stone U!

Its probably because I m drunk but this pic and comment had me in stiches so upvote for being the most hilarious post of the last 10 pages ^^

Is that elitist talk for "your opinion is worthless if you didnt do it yourself"?

Cuz I dont see the sense in that when we do actually have such reviews and even those are universally rejected or refused. Should I really go through all the effort, even dig into my pocket for the base amount of investemnt only so that you and the rest of the high-throne guys accept my posts? I dont care what you consider serious comment. Also your post is pretty rich for blasting him about being "offended by his delicate sensibilities" when you yourself portrait that same trait in your reply for bending out of shape over what he wrote.

You had fun with a few guys. Nothing he wrote refuses that and what he said still is valid and holds true. The fact that you had fun with a few guys says nothing about Star Citizen and is essentially worthless in determining its entertaining value for others. Its not hard to understand but obviously that simple fact is like a thorn in some peoples side.

I'm far from one of the faithful or elitist, Fritz...you already know that. I still maintain that if you really feel the need to gauge the (lack of) entertainment value as a simple directive for others when passing comment, you can't do that objectively if you've never experienced it yourself :)

That aside, I'm always glad when a freefly comes around, not to garner support for Ci¬G but just because it offers the opportunity for folks who'll never back the project to perhaps see what I see in it...good and bad. I couldn't with any conscience recommend anyone put a single penny toward supporting it...but it has it's good points for what it is...not for what it isn't. I've enjoyed the freefly and it's influx of newbies this time around...mostly since I decided to engage with them rather than plainly ignore them and perhaps taint them with my personal cycnicism for the project before they had a chance to find out for themselves.

Rather than batter their senses with complete negativity, I also showed them the good bits of SC...along with a canned history of failure from Ci¬G to realise most of the missing or broken parts to balance it out.
