Il2 BoS

Well, CoD's stock RAF campaign was thoroughly disappointing. Barely a campaign at all, but at least I had some fun being shot down by Bf-109s or shoving down 2000 rounds into invincible Junkers engines. It's funny how I played this a few months ago thinking "hey a bit old, but nice graphics nonetheless", then again now in post FS2020 times, "gosh that's laughable" 😅 . I'm definitely downloading some additional campaign.

The comparison is only fair if you subtract the gameplay from CoD though...FS2020 is certainly pretty, there's no denying that...but the sum total of all you can do is gawp at the scenery minus the Messerschmitts whilst flying around. An overly simplistic viewpoint of course but still a basic like for like comparison of the two distinct sub-genres of simulator :)

I played with FS2020 for a while and initially (like everyone else) enjoyed the experience and scenery, my first real try at a GA type sim to be fair since they never really interested me as a whole...in the end, that distinct lack of Messerschmitts finally killed it off for me, it became all about pressing buttons on that Garmin glass cockpit rather than looking out of the window... an aircraft management and autopilot simulator.

For GA flight sims...certainly FS2020, the gameplay is the scenery (and clicking on buttons and switches in the right order)...for combat sims, even the now dated CoD, the scenery isn't the focus, it's merely a backdrop for the Messerschmitts to play in.

That's why I usually fly with gauges and only do VFR...

P.S: the above wasn't really a comparison at all, I just found interesting to fly over the same place in two different titles, separated by 10 years in development and 80 in setting.

It's a pity Pat Wilson didn't do his campaign generator for CoD...It was an essential part of RoF, even in IL2 BoS to be fair although they now have a campaign mode built in. Flying Circus especially is a different beast entirely with Pat Wilson's CG.

Having a nice evening spin of IL-2 BoS, just realized that one of the Battle of Normandy aircraft, the P-47D-22, is already available, time to hop on!

edit: it never ceases to amaze me how beautifully detailed these cockpits are...

There are 2 things I would love to have in this game.

The simplest, is at least another level of time compression... Going on a bombing run 100 miles away (and returning) even on the current fastest time compression setting takes a good while...

The hardest would be interactive cockpits, like the ones most other modern flying gamers already have (like X-Plane 11, MSFS2020, DCS, etc)... I would love to start these beautiful machines from cold and do more manual management, but not if I have to bind (and remember the bindings) things like batteries, magnetos, radiators, cowl flaps, etc... While I can definitively live without this, it would bring a whole other level of awesomeness and appreciation for these beautifully recreated machines.

While this doesn't happen, time to go bomb some more of Stalin's forces... The young Luftwaffe lieutenant Hans Gruber never rests...

Is there a Regia Aeronautica campaign somewhere? I'd like to fly one as Alfredo Cappelloni and answer all radio comms with concitated hand gesturing. That could be why many of our earlier birds didn't even have radio comms. 😅

You can still do it while flying the italian made Macchi 202 :D It's DLC, but soon(ish) there will be the usual winter sale. :)

I need to get BoS first before getting the DLCs though 😁
Ah, the MC 202 and 205, beautiful machines...a shame that CloD has a very good rendition of the G.50 (now that was an ugly bird though) but nowhere to use it in SP...I still miss the huge content of 1946...

Desert wings:Tobruk comes with a short Regia Aeronautica campaign, Tempesta sull’Africa – flying the Cr.42. There's also a list of Italian aircraft (mostly variants) included...it's certainly more than I've seen elsewhere outside of IL2:1946...
  • BR.20M
  • MC.202 Series III
  • MC.202 Series III Alta Quota
  • MC.202 Series VII
  • MC.202 Series VII Alta Quota
  • CR.42
  • CR.42 Trop
  • D.520
  • G.50

Oh, I miss the CR.42 campaigns of 1946....dazzle the British Hawkers with hypnotic aerobatics while shooting gummy peas at them. 😅

@askavir - sorry, I thought the Tobruk DLC was for BoS while indeed it's for CloD....just checked on Steam and, thank but no thanks, will wait for a heavy, heavy discount 😦...we're still talking about a DLC for a game that crashes on selecting "Fly" once every three attempts...

Mossie :)
Today we'll continue to show you the progress of the aircraft currently in development. The hero of the day is two-seater this time, twin-engine fighter/bomber De Havilland Mosquito F.B.Mk.VI Series II we're making for Battle of Normandy. This famous and popular WWII British RAF plane had an unusual and distinct look (well, the same can be said about most British aircraft). But it's interesting not only because of its appearance - it reached high speeds in its class despite being partly wooden. Moreover, it kept its high-speed capability even when carrying bombs thanks to the internal bomb bay.

2000 pounds of bombs, four 20mm guns and four 7.69mm MGs the Mosquito carried made him a dangerous adversary for the enemy. In our sim, there will be additional weapon modifications available - eight RP-3 unguided rockets and 57mm anti-tank gun (!). Here are the first 3D renders of this bird of prey at its current development stage:

The recently announced player controllable mobile AA guns are also showing good progress. Along with the work on their visual models, we're improving the realistic physics model of the wheeled ground vehicles movement even more. And don't forget about their crews as well:
