LGBTQ+ Flags as ship paint jobs?

Still, I see no reason except the obvious technical one (limited colors) not to offer a rainbow paint job for those who want it. 🤷

this is where we need someone creative who can somehow magic a rainbow decal or paintjob from three colours! (@Qohen Leth)

or we just settle for a Love is Love decal (without the colour OFC)

Well you picked the one example where one represents oppression, slavery and Empire and the other represents the diversity of life and we are all human regardless of anything else.

So if anything the National Flags should go and only non-national ones that dont represent oppression are in-game. One is anachronistic of a bygone age of claiming territory or identifying your troops on the battlefield and the other is the futuristic view that is represented in ED.

I personally find national flags to have far more negative connotations, but I was speaking from an in-character vs. out-of-character consistency perspective.

That said, the view of the Elite setting where everything is cupcakes and rainbows is no where near how the setting is depicted either. Elite is a dystopia barely one step removed from galactic horror shows like Warhammer 40k.

No but NPCs are married to whoever they want without any prejudice.

Marriage itself has quite a few disturbing connotations and in a utopia, I'd expect it to be recognized an entirely outmoded form of contractual bondage, where individuals can freely associate or disassociate themselves with others at will, with no restrictions.

Yes, I'm married myself, but that's just an acknowledgement of the fact that I live under an oppressive regime that engages in social engineering by levying more extortion upon those who refuse to marry. I do quite a few distasteful things to ensure my life isn't a living hell; marriage was one of them.

Very True,

The people getting angry about it just shows how much work is left to do on equality out there, so much hated and discrimination it astounds me, but having these conversations certainly brings people out the woodwork and shows their true colours.

I agree that there is still a lot of work to be done, but I'm a firm beliver in the motto "kill them with kindness".

We have to remember we're dealing with hundreds of years of indoctrination up against a couple decades of progress. I don't think people who discriminate or fight against things like the subject of this thread are necessarily bad people. We're in a social revolution and the Internet has compounded the problem in many ways. Our society is almost being reborn into a new age of awareness. People fear it. That's where the hostility comes from. Fear, and ignorance.

Instead of pushing people forcefully to the curb and demanding immediate progress, we should instead gently guide them and stay as civil as possible.

Out of curiosity, how would you feel if Frontier provided religious paints, like symbols for Christianity, Islam, etc? Religion is also a part of the Elite Dangerous galaxy.

I'm all for it, but I think once you go down the "I want MY group to have representative paint in the game" road, the problem is that soon Frontier becomes burdened by having to create specialty paints for everyone and everything. Personally I'd rather they'd focus on cool paints like the flame paints they have for the Eagle and Cobra. The paints they've been putting out recently are pretty rubbish IMO.

And that's my final comment on this matter. After all, I can paint my ship whatever I want ;)

Well, one thing has been proven ... even those who agree, still disagree with each other.
Par for the course for this forum I suppose.

This ^^^

and this is going to be my final post in this thread. Not interested in opening myself up as a target. I've said what I think, and I have nothing else to add.

If FDev did decide to make a rainbow skin should it be free or cost ARX?
And can FDev keep the money or should it go to a LGBTQ charity?

Fdev I don't blame you if you don't bother..
Also just a skin is not going to be enough representation there will be further demands like gay powerplay characters etc.
there's also plenty other causes that you could do to. Pink skin for breast cancer. BLM, Palestine flag BDS, green party whatever environmental aware etc.

Except its not doable.

Why not?

Do you mean in the sense that the flag is too detailed for the shape of the ships, so bits of it would get cropped off? I can see that for some of the flags perhaps, but others that are just coloured bars should work fine.

Asymmetry clearly isn't a problem anymore for ship skins.

yep, i can on PC too might work up a flag for the OP :)

as for your question, no issue with it, its only any issue if its a symbol which genuinely causes offence, if someone were to suggest it i would not oppose it.

Would there be the same discussion if OP had just asked for Rainbow paint job and not a flag?

Then its either a Rainbow, a Pride symbol or even support for the NHS (yeah, sorry about that but UK schoolchildren started it by drawing rainbows to mean hope in support of the NHS and theres lots in windows near me that have nothing to do with Pride)

But to the outsider, its just a rainbow, it only means something to the individual.

I doubt in 3306 these social problems are still not solved

time doesn't solve problems, decisions do. plus i wouldn't rule out the possibility that in 3306 humanity is again in some dark age, burning heretics, we've been there several times in history. actually, some of the current outlooks are quite grim. take nothing for granted.

Well Humans moved to different planets, which means each planet can have a unique "Identity" as long as travel to other planets is cheap and affordable for regular people.
This also means human thought will be a "Fragmented" ideology. Each ideology will be more concentrated on the individual planet than ever before.

You will have a Planet of people who think Cheese Burgers is the Staple Food Source and all other food is Heretic.
Another Planet of only people who like working out and fat people are sinners
Another planet that all people must own cats as by law.

Once you got Space travel and mass colonization things will only get more bizzare.

indeed, but that's not a small hurdle.

to illustrate, we're currently daydreaming about terraforming mars, millions of km away and with no atmosphere, while we're not even able to keep our own cozy planet clean ... 🤷‍♂️

...Its only any issue if its a symbol which genuinely causes offence...

Who decides what is and is not offensive, though? This thread implies that some people would deem a rainbow flag to be problematic, and of course there are literally some countries where being gay or lesbian is illegal... and there have also been people criticising the existence of the national flags too, because they find those to be offensive. Once you go down this road, it's impossible to please everyone, which means you will inevitably end up offending someone. Either you are ok with that, in which case you can't really justify banning ANY symbols, no matter how offensive some people might think they are... or you're not ok with that, in which case you shouldn't advocate going down this road in the first place.

Also... some people have said "It's the future, no one would care anymore" - to which others have responded, "If no one cares, then why not have the flag, what's the problem?" But we're not playing the game in the future, we're playing it now, in 2020... and the fact is, some people nowadays are all-too-eager to blow things out of proportion.

What happens if Odyssey is a great success, and some famous gay youtuber starts playing it, and they buy the flag skin for their ship... and then I come across them at a Community Goal, and blow them up? Will people just shrug their shoulders, say "Ah well, that's Elite for you!", and laugh it off? Or will they be outraged about my 'homophobic attack', and demand that I be banned? In the current year, I think we all know the answer to that one... and Frontier would either have to ban me, or face a twitter storm of bad publicity and death threats...

I wish we lived in a nice world, where we could have nice things... but we don't, so we can't, and it's naive to think otherwise. Putting the rainbow flag in the game opens up a whole can of worms, it invites sociopaths to start throwing their weight around... if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile. So, don't give them an inch.
