Sadly, yes. 11001 isn't a possible combination for numbers either.
Valid combinations would be
11111
01111
00111
00011
00001
00000
10000
11000
11100
11110

The only other obvious possibility then is just doing something with the numbers the bright parts represent. The bright parts might also just be a red herring but that's unlikely.

The 5 digits could represent the main star, and the shorter sequences could represent different objects. But I don't know how this would help us.

it would definitely take a while to brute-force explore everything nearby to find that, but it's possible

Anyone else thinking about mysterious weirdness intruding into what is normally a realistic game? 2001 style? Maybe the 'stones' are mysterious black monoliths...?

I'm still wondering over that last group of digits, 00100000. The only reason to end all of it with a space that makes sense IMO is that they needed a way to add another group of highlighted and/or dimmed digits to complete an additional hint hidden inside this puzzle.

You could be onto something there.

The cluster was named the Jewel Box by the English astronomer John Herschel, who described it as a “casket of variously coloured precious stones”

From Earth the cluster looks like it sits on top of the Coalsack nebula, check out the images on this page:

Just had a look at that article. Is it just me or are there similarities with the 'Jewel Box' constellation layout and the layout of the highlighted number in FDev's pictograph?

Quite weird indeed. I wondered about this too: why the additional space?

Planning to join the fun later today but need to equip a shipyard to my fleet carrier first, to be more useful to fellow CMDRs. @CMDR Xerix what's your planned destination? Let's coordinate to cover more ground.
