Please teach this long term player how to pirate

Hello again!

I think I am getting my head around it :)

Would it be possible to check the following and fill in the one blank I have please? And take a looksie at my Cobra.
BTW - I don't have access to Pack Hounds and doubt I will be able to for a while (is it at least 4 weeks?) and CBA to unlock engineers UNLESS there is a lvl1 engineer who is really worth the effort.
  1. Accept a "liberate hostages/diplomatic pouches/whatever" mission.
  2. Find target
  3. Interdict
  4. Thermals for dropping shields
  5. Use my [BLANK - can't be packhounds] to take out the targetted point defences, then engines, and then the target's collector limpet controller
  6. Somehow steady the drifting ship
  7. Use Cannons for hatches
  8. Scoop the loot [EDIT - I am planning to manually scoop the loot]
  9. Take to Black market
Questions:
What is the best, non-PH weapon to take out engines or point defence?
Do I need the hatchbreaker limpits - if so what is the point of the cannon? Is it for targets that are spinning too much?

Something like this?
I know! I know! What do you want the Class 1 fuel scoop and the SRV for?? I just do.

I have put a C1 and C2 beam on the left side and a C2 cannon on the right side. Not sure what to put on the right side's small slot?

Thanks again!

  • best non powerplay weapons to take oput point defense and engines are seekers imho --- if you are not really good with dumbfire missiles. both do splash damage and are great for stripping internal moduls.
  • taking cannons for the hatch isn't a good idea imho - npc don't have a lot of health, so you are more likely todestroy them. a suboptimal alternative instead of hatchbreakers is a single beam. the "rate of fire" triggers malfunctions often.
  • manually scooping is a bad idea imho. but by all means try it and learn from it! you gonna destroy cargo scooping while under fire for exampel. so it you are not going for single t, bring a collector.
    - there is a learning curve ---- best you can do is giving it a try asap :)

Since the mission target is in a handy mission SS, I do it more like
3. drop into mission SS, find and target the mission target
4. match speed
5. find underside (where the hatch is located)
6. fire hatch breaker
7. check the drops against the mission requirements
8. pick up the cargo (I use targeted collectors)
9. if mission requirements are fulfilled, scram. Otherwise, go to 6.
10. mission cargo goes to the mission giver, I don't bother (so far) with random drops, but yes, those woud need to go to a Black Market

If the target starts shooting, check its impact against my hull strength. Maybe go silent and/or drop a heatsink.

That's so helpful! Thank you very much.
I think I will go for the seekers because I am not very good with projectiles. I fly 100% FA-off and prefer fixed over gimballed weapons. Unfortunately I am not consistant enough mixing thermals and projectiles so yeah, seekers it is!
I will also take your advice and use the hatchbreakers too.

Replaced the cannon and added two seekers

Regarding manually scooping.
I think automating everything takes some of the fun away
Even 100% FA-off I think I am getting pretty consistent and speedy with manually scooping.
Skip to the 3:45 minute mark if you are interested enough to see me FA-off scooping.

Brilliant! Thank you very much. Proper excited. Just need to wait for hangover to diminish now...

Sweet!

Use missiles to destroy the engines.

Cannons - I don't use, I just use hatch breaker limpets.

I'd personally swap out the cannon with a missile rack, and put a c1 cannon in the 1 slot if you really want a cannon. (I'd probly just fit a multicannon)

Also, you might not need to take out the point defences - if you do, missiles might be tough as point defence is for taking out missiles! (which is where packhounds come in)
Try and snipe them with your lasers or cannons (but cannons can easily breach the hull and do other damage, to things like powerplants, which could cause a big boom so watch out)

Sorted
I have removed the class 2 cannon, I am going to have the class2 with fixed beams because they still converge nicely and will have the class 1 with seekers for the engines once I have dealth with any PDs.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to packhounds, are burst lasers any good for taking out modules like point defences? Or is it beams all the way?

Should let you see my viper mk4. Nothing flash, but works great.
Why Viper4 over Cobra 3?
Do you find the class 1 beams sufficient?

I find it has better stats for shields and hull, plus an extra military slot, which all I lose is some boost speed, which to me is minimal. But I love the viper mk 4 so if you enjoy the cobra, and many do, use that. It does allow you to see the pretty generic npc piracy set up, which will port straight over to a cobra.

Taking out big shields, I use the missiles in combination with the lasers on the shields. It can be done, but you are hampered on amount of cargo you can carry in the small ship, so its not often a target in this. Asps (explorer and scout), T6 and keelbacks are my favoured foes here. They will usually fill my hold just nicely with ltds. T7 usually have the toxic chemicals of all ships, and so corrosive racks are fitted on mine, just because.

I really do like the V4. I took both Cobra and Viper4 thematically fit the pirate role :)
I think the V4 even takes the biscuit for most pirate looking!
The Cobra can multi-crew though and I am hoping my misses will join me in some shenanigans one day.

most still do not on this forum as google skills needed are lacking

Oh poor you.. You are so great.
You can belittle me all you want but I searched for hours and past months I never found a ltd T9. Put it down to luck or whatever you want.

The Phantom also makes for an extremely good upgrade if you start to look at medium ships. Its like a cobra on steroids.

And the slot sizes on the Phantom are quite therapeutic for the ocd inflicted amongst us...

I started to do political prisoners/diplomatic bags missions. They are quite fun and diverse. My favourite scenario: hatch breaker limpet, cargo dropping, the robbed ship and I racing and ramming each other to be the first to catch the stuff manually (both ships have point defence, so collector limpets are dying immediately after release). :D

I found it much better and more effective to not use any guns before all mission cargo is scooped.

They are still out there. Just got to be lucky to come across them.

Here is the spoils from a T6 (had 42 ltds in it) from today that I found in my Viper Mk4, just to show there are sweet prizes still available :

I see the regular market buy price in the same system is at 1MCr, you are getting 700k. Is that due to demand ("volume tax"), or do black markets in general only buy at 70% of the local buy price (or do BM prices have their own rules, independent of local system prices)?

Black markets do pay less than legal values, and it is quite a high percentage drop off. from the wiki:

Prices on the black market can vary greatly, depending on the goods and system. Generally, the black market subtracts 25% from the normal commodity prices. For example, if a station offers 1,000,000 CR per unit of Low Temperature Diamonds in the normal market, the black market will offer 750,000 CR.

Hi all.

I have never been able to bring myself to do it! Even to AIs. But want to give it a go.
Briefly:
  • I am not into min:maxing
  • I prefer ships with character.
  • Happy to call it a day after 2 or 3 successful... acquisitions?
  • Defo don't want to destroy target, even AI.
  • Don't mind running away if I bite more than I can chew

So I would really appreciate some tips to get me started e.g.:
  1. Most thematic ship?
  2. How should I equip said ship?
  3. What systems to aim for?
  4. Basic strategies?
  5. Things to watch out for, be wary of?
  6. Do I need to wear a funny hat?
Any advice, gratefully received!

There is nothing really worth pirating. Even A.I. pirates get enthusiastic if all you carry is a load of fish or human waste. That should tell you enough about the state of piracy.

Regarding political prisoners/diplomatic bags missions: don't do them in wing! The risk of getting "stolen" stuff which is not considered mission-related skyrockets!

No idea why, most likely a bug. Those missions are bugged as hell, but I like them anyway. :D
