Newcomer / Intro Why not a second Galaxy?

Second galaxy you say... you find a Guardian FSD boost that tells you it'll show you such wondrous things if only you'd give it access to route plotting, so you do. You jump, and then you're looking at alien stars in an alien skybox, and you haven't a clue in all creation where you are. The Guardian AI is silent, and you're now lost far beyond the known frontiers of human exploration... yeah I'd be down for that :geek:

Didn't the original Elite have eight galaxy's?

How long would that take to fully explore? Certainly not by the end of the week :D

Just to give a fuller explanation. When the original Elite was launched computers ran with 8bit processors and operating system, 256 is the largest number possible in an 8 bit system so the maximum number of objects they could have in memory at the time was 256. The intergalactic jump was essentially a loading screen where they dumped the existing data from memory and loaded an entire new set, so you could never jump from a star in one set of data to a star in a different set of data, hence the decisions to call them galaxies even though they were far to limited to really be galaxies.

The current 64bit binary can represent 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 objects, so the entire galaxy and all it's planets and etc can be represented by unique ID's in a single 64bit address space. How they would implement another galaxy I don't know, but I would suggest the dwarf galaxies that orbit our own, the largest being the Magellanic clouds Large and Small would make ideal targets for such a project, you could then get a really good view of out own galaxy!

Set course for Andromeda...

Perspective, my ambitious friend. Just because you can see every star on the map doesn't mean you know anything about it. I can look at a map of the world and see Australia. I actually just looked at a map of Australia and saw a city called Bunbury. Cool, that must be where Australians bury their buns. No need to go there now. My favorite planet that I've ever discovered is Athaip XR-H D11-219 B 1. Go there and come back and then tell us how much we need another galaxy. In all seriousness, get out there and explore and you will find the game much more interesting than just looking at a map. And FWIW, I might get my avatar picture fixed SOON^tm. I actually look like I'm in Australia. Isn't everything upside down there?

Well, of course :)

I've seen a lot of suggestions down the years here that I evaluate as mostly pointless, and this is on the list. The OP is still working out training and wants another galaxy, despite the fact that a tiny fraction of the one we already have has been explored, and he himself has not found any of it. But yeah, add a second galaxy, sure. But this one will be discovered slowly, unlike the one we've been flying around for six years now.

Oh yes! And I would be right behind you! Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps ....... 🤪

Too late, Commander Blast is already there and exploring. He got bored with Odyssey.

Galaxy 3 is for the dispossed, macOS commanders, Linux commanders, offline players and those who prefer ADS.

A module that was used in the place holder version of exploration before the current system was introduced, mentioning it over in the Dangerous Discussions forum can resurrect lots of salty tears about the change.

It is gone now and not something to worry about.

My personal view is that our friendly Thargoids are coming from another Galaxy. Follwing this, the only reason I see for another galaxy is a massive campaign to destroy their homeword :)
