Those who got their second/third/fiftieth account - what's the plan?

So the new player process is pretty smooth and the tutorial is mostly excellent. Combat feels way too bullet spongy though. I'd have hoped for the first mission targets to be Sidewinder or maybe Eagle ships but they were Vipers. The fight took quite some time as the AI easily out ran me to recharge shields and return. Didn't pose any risk and I like the AI doing that but for a brand new pilot?

You'd want those harmless missions giving you softer targets. And 7 is possibly too many too. 3 might be a better way to gently introduce the new player (it's enough of a challenge just to find your targets after all).

I went to a low res and it was somewhat fun. Though I engaged a competent target and you can really see engineering kicking in already. Sidewinder target but massively more powerful. I don't particularly mind that I'd struggle to kill it in a stock sidey but the disparity is far too great. The multiple system security (including Anaconda) struggled to hit him. So much so that he focused on me. I had to run and just made it away with 14% hull left. System authorities finally learned to aim and he died but no credit.

Handed in bounty vouchers (a nice 87k for a brand new player) but only managed 2/7 on the mission. I'll try the mission USS again next time. I need to log off for the night.

One other thing. After getting my bounty reward and repairing, that would have been a perfect time for the game to prompt me to outfitting or the shipyard to potentially upgrade. Yet, the station had neither. A quirk of the game I'm well aware of but I'd suggest fdev add full services to these systems, across all locations. And better stock (at least for the small ships). The stuff on offer at Coelho was awful.

That would have soured the night for me had I been new. It was mostly good fun but having no opportunity to access the upgrade game loop after my first foray out was a missed opportunity. Had I been able to buy a new shield or weapon before logging off, I'd have felt a much bigger sense of a completed loop.

As it is, I'll head back out and pew pew some more with my little tickle guns tomorrow to try to compete these 7 kills.

Just curious what you have in mind for your alt CMDR... FC fuelling slave, role-playing, ironman playstyle, etc.?
I'm curious too because in a couple of months you are probably going to have to upgrade all these new 'free' accounts to Odyssey...??? I have two ED accounts (the alt has been around for a year or two) but only my main ED account will get updated to Odyssey, and even then I'll probably wait a few months until it's on sale 🥳😎

Same here, got my main Frontier account and bought the alt during a sale on Steam.

I won't buy Odyssey twice, and it's another reason why I don't actually want a third one... I find that once I get to a certain level in the game I start to get bored (usually when I achieve a reasonably well engineered ship) and I don't simply want to replicate the same gameplay as on my main account.

Having said that at least an alt account without Odyssey can still add some value in the form of extra pip while keeping company in the cockpit, or shoveling Tritium on carriers.

I originally said that I wouldn't bite with this free Epic store offer, I already have an alt account bought during a xmas sale a couple of years back & he's just been hitching a free ride on my Carrier since June......I'm still only using my main account, so what's the point??............

.......Yeah OK:sneaky:, I've just got the Epic launcher sorted & downloading the free copy as I type:whistle:.......just hope it doesn't mess with my 10000+hrs main account, I'd be miffed!

My alt account happily remained base game until fdev upgraded it for free. I'm not buying Odyssey twice (or three times). It's been fun to do the new commander thing again but I still feel this should be supported by extra slots.

I think some might buy Odyssey more than one time, definitely, but I firmly believe the main objective of this giveaway is to entice new players to the game and hope they buy Odyssey. I think it'll work.

13A is my original account. Grinding for the final Elite (combat) but currently on hold until Odyssey drops.

24B is out in Colonia

13D is my explorer and tends to stay out in the black.

I have three accounts and roleplay all of them.

I bought my first alt in a sale while Akarana was out in the middle of nowhere on an expedition. This was meant to be a resurrection of my original Elite commander from 1984. A thoroughly nasty piece of work, he made his less than honest living exclusively from narcotics, weapons and slaves. It turned out to be great fun having a character based in the bubble while my primary remained out in the black for many months. Alt #1 also hitched a ride on the Gnosis for that Canonn expedition to the top and bottom of the galaxy.

My second alt followed the next year, again from a sale. I wanted to try out the new player introduction and starter zone (both well worth doing by the way; they are excellent) and thought it would be interesting to have a female commander. Originally my plan was to use this character for testing and wipe periodically, but she became rather successful in both rank and earnings so is now a continuing character.

Both alts have been riding around on my carrier for the last few months and doing some mining and logistics. I have limited engineering for the alts to purely unlocking a G5 FSD as I really didn't want to go through that grindfest again.

I always had a vague idea of three characters, so I could have one aligned to each superpower but didn't see any purpose for more.

That said, Alt #3 has just joined the fun thanks to the Epic launch. Not sure what path this one will take yet. Maybe a testing account, but if I get a good story idea in my head...

For five years, I had only my primary account. Almost four years ago, I got a second account so that I could host the international private group that flipped Wolfberg 4 years ago. With that private group, after flipping Wolfberg, we flipped Orrere and held it for a year against laughable attempts by Code to reclaim it. About a year ago, I got a 3rd account to use as a 2nd wing anchor for wing trade missions, boosting my wing trade mission earnings up to 300-400M/hr per account for a net 1B+/hr. Now I'm adding a 4th account to further boost my earnings. I expect that, with 4 accounts, I'll be able to boost my earnings to net about 1.4B/hr with wing trade missions. This is why I've stated on many occasions that earning credits for the 15m/wk carrier maintenance cost is trivial.

In addition to serving as wing anchors, my alt accounts have allowed me to be in several systems at the same time. This proved very useful when flipping player-controlled systems by myself. In this capacity, the alt accounts provided current system status merely by logging into the accounts. They served as spies, especially for systems where the player factions were located, systems that were not getting updated in eddb on a regular basis. These accounts also let me keep spy on BGS players that traveled in open.

Before the introduction of carriers, my alt accounts helps with storing commodities for engineering and for sale to other pilots who needed them for engineering. This has since been superseded by the incredible storage capacity of carriers.

I'm sure there are other uses for alt accounts. However, for now, the uses described above have been well worth their cost and effort.

Got to say this sounds like actual work and makes me glad I'm not really into the BGS (even though I like the principle on paper).

Will be interesting to see if the above will still be possible after the rebalancing, it does sound a bit obscene if I'm honest. What are you doing with all those credits?

One of the reasons I'm not bothering with the third account (even if it's free) because I won't use it in the future, similar to my existing alt as I won't be buying Odyssey twice. At least my alt would still be useful for multicrew shenanigans though.
Odyssey one day will become free or very cheap like the rest. ;)
