Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

But how to align point 1 and 3? Mission impossible.

Don't say CIG haven't added lots of stuff this year!

But also don't mention all the things that backers are still waiting on and don't mention the new roadmap that was prioritized at the start of the year. Don't mention all the things the game still needs before it can be released. Look, just agree with Jared and buy more spaceships!

Fans are making a lot of fuss about the new SC video, but man, its beyond a homage to Star Wars, they've basically copied everything about Star Wars, from sounds, to style, to set pieces. And of course the stormtrooper level of incompetence from the bad guys. And tropes... so many tropes.

CIG once again demonstrating they can do pretty, but also don't have an original creative bone in their collective body.

For those who haven't seen it (and i'd say it is worth watching, just pretend you're watching Star Wars and you'll be good to go)

Impressions:
  • the rock field is pretty neat
  • countermeasures spread in a parabolic trajectory.....in space
  • no thruster assistance on turns or direction change because cryengine operates in an atmosphere by default
  • character models from 2015
  • facial expressions at the basic tier
  • constant and extreme trajectory changes enabling people to walk around normally or not being secured
  • "I think we lost them" lol on the level with "silent or the bad guys will hear us"
  • in SC fashion ships in floating mode have artificial gravity even tho the world at large doesnt demonstrate that level of technoloigcal advancement (is AG a lore thing by chance? I dont remember)
  • planetary surface looks neat, I m feeling PoIs coming that look exactly like that
  • I m actually shocked at how bad characters look
  • artisitic cutsecene removes explaining the 2 day foot trip to the wall without any kind of survival gear...cheap but effective
  • character animations equally bad as the avatars

And of course the stormtrooper level of incompetence from the bad guys.

LOL I see what you mean ^^

  • no sign of mass or velocity while driving
  • ramp didnt kill them :D

Overall it explains all the reactions. SC ultras will of course be renewed in their faith, whales take this as additional "help material" to continue dreaming, the whole clip allows for some future ship sales and of course the whole thing is absolutely brutal in driving home the point that all of this is several decades away from release. But even if what the vid showed was reality today...it would be already severely outdated and outshined on a visual level by the competition coming out as we speak.

On the other hand, I m glad to see that CIG still can do this kind of videos. Even tho it probably takes YEARS now compared to the severel vids a month at the beginning. Cant ve been cheap too. Good use of backer money I suppose :) Anything to keep the fish on the hook eh? :)

The video isnt supposed to portrait development progress because the characters and assets are basic, well known and dont show any level of fidelity that would be new/enhanced to what we already know. Its also not furthering the lore or story in any way. Its a random pick of "emergent gameplay" (currently im-)possible to make backer slobber over the potential. I would understand this kind of videos coming out close to release as it helps to increase hype and market awareness but at this stage of the development it seems to be a complete waste. Additionally maybe it could ve been impressive from a technical point of view several years ago but in 2020 its showing its age or rather the age of the game engine and the game world at large. If your goal was to create a cool gameworld video than again, the bar is much higher today in terms of video quality or even content but maybe I m unfair. Most games have a rich lore to dab into allowing them to create all kinds of cool videos.

My most recent "awesome" moment in this regard are the Astartes Videos from the Warhammer 40.000 Universe. Not only are the videos showing a very high level of fidelity/realism, they are also on point regarding the gritty reality of that universe and transporting the fascination of said universe. I had shivers running down my back watching it for the first time and have watched them a lot since. The impressive part is that these videos were made from a fan, are a single-man production and they show that Chris Roberts is a toddler in regards to articstic creativity, dramatical awareness and also for combining action and music/sounds.

Star Citizens video is "okay" I guess but its nothing special and in no way provides any kind of answers surrounding the project. Its not a confirmation about it going strong and it doesnt help to progress story or lore. Its a random piece of action that you could have in any other game just as well if not for the SC related assets. I couldnt help but think "just stop with the fluff already CIG and get on with the development". I guess there has been a reason to release the video and what it shows now, maybe to gloss over the current development drought? From all the possible explanations as to why CIG released the video now a lot of them are actually pretty bad/negative but I m sure the ultras will cling to the good ones only dismissing anything else just like the did the years before ^^

I assume most of you know the Astartes Videos already but just because they are so awesome take this as spport for the creator, maybe he ll find Star Citizen equally cool to create another series of vids about it :)

  • "I think we lost them" lol on the level with "silent or the bad guys will hear us"

Not surprising though. The Wing Commander movie had a weird 'rig for silent running' scene that could have been ripped straight from the guts of any Submarine movie, and more depressingly it had Jurgen Pronchow (the skipper from Das Boot) in it as well, which hurt my soul.

  • in SC fashion ships in floating mode have artificial gravity even tho the world at large doesnt demonstrate that level of technoloigcal advancement (is AG a lore thing by chance? I dont remember)

I'm sure it is. For his many faults, that's the sort of attention to detail Chris focuses on.

SC ultras will of course be renewed in their faith

Ultras? Come on dude, that's not cool and a bit of ridiculous name calling.

Did CIG put something else on sale recently? Big spike in funding.

I thought the whales would have splurged themsevles enough recently.

Flyable in 3.12 and for sale again.

Ultras? Come on dude, that's not cool and a bit of ridiculous name calling.

This term is sitting between "fanboy" and "fanatic" and I was thinking calling people who simply like the idea so much that they are willing to look over all the issues fanatics is a bit much. I wasnt aware "ultras" is worse? Either way I just wanted to express a superlative to fanboy as I felt that that term wasnt sufficient enough. Nothing more sinister or trying to demonize people--honest. But people call me hater so I feel justified in coming up with some equal terms.
