Elite Dangerous: The 2020 Review

My meter wide Lego Asp Scout disagrees with you. I think all those Imperial smack downs at CGs has made you.....bitter :D

You know what's bitter? The sauce (or whatever the heck it is) in those Kumo burgers you praise so much. Are those things ever going to pass the Imperial Health and Safety Consumption test? ;)

I believe it's time for a fight - Sisko vs Lego Asp Scout - playground at 12.30 today!

Dunno about you lot, but as a grown adult, I have much more mature things to do in my busy schedule:

11:00: Posting on a forum about a video-game and discussing how a vessel in that game sucks so hard, even light can't escape from it.
12.00: Playing Gears Tactics
13:00: Shifting some gold via my T9.
14:00: Buying Arx
15:00: Food?
16:00: Replaying Wasteland 3 (easily one of the best games I've played).
17:00: TBA

 ;)

Sounds like the fight is on for 1700 then, as you're free then... ;)

well I came back half way through the year and for me it's just got better as the months rolled on, joined here and noted the need for more in game stuff and we soon got galnet back, then there was a need for more communication and that's another big tick, Odyssey is shaping up to be a worthy DLC and the promise of a code refresh will hopefully mean bugs are easier to sort
hell even that has seen a better outcome has it not? the PWA, Azure PJ's and twitch drop bugs have been sorted and we got communication from the team letting us know the progress

In all honesty I see the game being in good hands and progressing well throughout 2021, of course there will be new bugs, of course it wont have everything each/all of us want but the fact that they are listening and it could have some as well as bugs being looked at and communicated, what more can we ask?

Yeah, communication has vastly improved. Frontier deserve credit for that. I still have concerns about Odyssey, but those concerns will be answered in the coming months, one way or another. There's been a heavy focus on mining this year (how many hotspot updates???) and I'm hoping other professions see some serious TLC, piracy and smuggling especially.

Crime should offer serious pay and offer serious consequences for those careless enough to be caught, but at the moment, its more profitable to rob from rocks in ice rings and that's......wrong. Odyssey has been in development for 2 years, it would be nice if a month or 2 could be allocated to crime and the related professions.

Don't get me started on Powerplay. Promised much love, but its an abandoned child at this point.

Banter aside, this rings sadly true yet again for another year.

So-2021? I expect some tweaks, but I really hope FD suddenly don't think thats enough.

Yeah, am I right in saying that all that's been done is some changes to calculations etc? Sandro had some great suggestions but they haven't been added. Sad to think that Mining hotspots got more updates this year then Powerplay has received since its launch.

Nothing has been changed to add gameplay since.......actually no gameplay has been added at all. The most recent change was to sort out ambiguity in overlaps.

All those words I crafted, chosen with care, typed in.....and all people are talking about is the last line in my OP. Guess I've ruffled a few feathers eh? (with the ironic exception of Old Duck)

ANYWAY.......

......what do others think of 2020 as far as Elite Dangerous was concerned?
Anything connected with 2020 is on auto-suppress. No option to remove Elite from that filter. :(

I think powerplay is getting such a huge overhaul that its akin to a new dlc, with Odyssey out and settled this will be the next big thing
they need to let the current stories play through and we'll see what's left, no point starting on PP if some of those characters are gonna get chopped (up)

Wasn't there a demotion or turmoil feature planned for Powerplay? Shame that hasn't happened. I was hoping for a situation like in Stargate SG-1, where the bad guys (the Goa'uld System Lords) would get killed off now and then, but other bad guys would rise up, claim the now-unoccupied territory for themselves and potentially become an even bigger threat to nearby leaders and little old Earth.

Powerplay is too static, even the portraits haven't changed. At this point maybe some of the characters should be chopped up and end up Kumo-burgerised! I'm hoping this on-going narrative results in bigger changes for PP.

Yeah, 2020 can [bleep] the hell off, I think most of us will be glad to see the back of it.

You're preying on XBoxes?

MS thinks so, brought 2 of the things this year ;).

If you look at the amount of work that went into Powerplay you'd see that FD had big plans for it- I really want to know what changed that opinion. Nearly every tweak they have done could have been done as a point update like with FCs (which had loads) and not left to fester.

Maybe it's just me being a "glass half full" kind of guy speaking here, but I've certainly seen the last half or quarter of this year as promising for ED, especially compared to the months of "maintenance mode" that went prior to it (yes, I know, low bar to clear, but I try to be a positive guy as much as I can).

The revival of GalNet, CGs, things happening, the overdue balance pass, what seems to me to be a rekindling of the enthusiasm of the dev/CM team, it's all good.

Are we there yet? Nope. There are still a number of things that need to happen in my opinion, lots of ancient bugs that need to be ruddy well addressed at long last, the balance passes being better than things used to be but not quite there yet, you name it, I don't disagree with that, but I find it extremely encouraging that we're seeing movement at last, so there's that. I like it. All I would say, because I can't ever get enough of a good thing, is Faster, Please!™.

But what it is now is still better than the "maybe, no plans, can't say, what bugs" or just plain radio silence that we had for so long, and I welcome it.

I'll take what I can get, and I do declare that I'm getting a lot more than I used to these days so, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

It has improved for sure- ED certainly had a very damaging fallow period where FD left things too long IMO. But things have certainly turned around reminiscent of the Ed years.
