Looking forward to intense fighting in FPS Odyssey

Seriously.

Yes... I love the flight sim and the galaxy model. I STILL enjoy mining, and fighting with ships, space trucking and exploring... love it all.

BUT....

I also play Fallout 4 A LOT... with mods that make fighting very intense.. WOTC for instance on hardest levels.
I also play Call of Duty.

So for me... adding FPS is a win win. When the reveal came out... the fighting was more intense than expected... for ME that was a plus

All this being said... anyone else looking forward to it for real?

Yup, I'm looking forward to shooting people in the face, teabagging their corpse, and drawing a member on the floor, with bullets, between their legs if they die in the right position. !!
Jet-packing across dangerous terrain on a bleak moonscape while under constant attack by ground and air forces (Like that FANTASTIC moon battle scene in 'Alita - Battle Angel')...
Infiltrating bases and, maybe, just maybe, hacking into terminals to extract data or crash vital systems...

And then looking quietly out at a sunrise on a world untouched by humanity for billions of years...and drawing a giant Winky-Woo on a mountainside with my gun.

But only if it fits within some arbitrarily pre-deffined idea of what does or doesn't constitute someones else's idea of what level of reality I should be experiencing in a game where people complain about travel times in a universe that lets you bend the laws of physics over, jam a fiver in it's mouth and pound up to 50x the speed of light in less than a minute.

How dare you.

I'm not that into combat, it is a means to an end for me (I want those bounties for their inf, or kill in a CZ to win the war) and I don't see that changing.

But I am interested to find out how FDev will implement zero G. I don't mean mag boots & a clomping noise, I mean the 'flight model' of walking.

The ship flight model is ED is brilliant, born from a compromise between true 6DoF and having the game be accessible & fun enough to appeal to players more familiar with normal atmospheric flight in flight sims & other machine based combat games. It feels like a genuine learned skill at every level of ability, satisfying to do well & never truly perfected. The SRV achieves something similar with it's own 'flight model' while off the ground.

I hope there is an on-foot equivalent to FA-off in zero-G and very low-G environments where it will be possible to use suit-thrusters to manoeuvre in those same 6DoF the ship (and the SRV to a lesser extent) can.

I hope FDev are working on this, and I hope they get it good enough to be included in the initial release of Odyssey.

Similarly... i am curious how gravity plays out with grenades... on a very high G world... do they drop to your feet like the meteorites do when you crack them... do grenades fly hundreds of feet in low G?

Inquiring minds want to know many of these things and yes... the flight model is most enjoyable

FDEV have already stated that gravity will affect the trajectory of thrown grenades, and also that walking will be limited to below a certain gravity, so for low grav yes, for very high grav you will not get the chance to test it.

All these things are beside the point though, FPS game play in Elite will never be as good as FPS game play in a dedicated FPS game, it's as if COD suddenly decided to add space ships and interstellar travel to their game, it's always going to be a second rate experience! So if I wanted to enjoy some mad FPS game play I would play a game designed for it!

The FPS game play is designed FOR ELITE and its world... thats more than good enough for me... you see.... i want MORE in the game... and THIS is more. more to do... more emersion and maybe... just maybe it will surprise you.

No it won't, I have played FPS's for well on 40 years privately and in national tournaments. There are already space based FPS's, I can't see Elite FPS being anywhere near as good. Oh sure it will light some peoples candle, but that's them, not me.

Hehe.. more power to ya.... though i hear they have increased ground to air defenses... so watch out and happy bombardment to ya

That would be great, provided they make them like 4x deadlier with at least 4km of range. Planetary assaults, or whatever they're called, are so easy it feels like an exploit.

I'm of the same mindset as @varonica. I don't think it'll be bad, but FPS has been honed by thousands of games to the point where it is and few ever do good enough to even show up on the radar as a momentary blip because it is such a competitive genre. EDO FPS is destined to be a blip, and even then only a blip because it is strapped to an already successful game. Were it on it's own, It'd be more than likely one of those games you never heard of. It's not a pessimistic take, it's just the truth. I am hoping that the range of dirt-leg activities stretches far beyond FPS because, as much as I am not all that interested in dirt-legs itself, I absolutely love ED and know that I will end up feeling EDO's success/failure.

FDev answered this already.

Grenades will be impacted by gravity.

But we won't be playing on "very high g worlds". There will be an upper limit based on what's safe for humans to exist in. No word on what that limit is.

But grenades will float or sink depending on gravity.

I'm looking forward to it very much though I'd not expect it to play anything close to CoD. Short, hand picked clips might suggest it's quite high octane but I'm not expecting it to be that busy and I'm expecting motion/navigation to be much slower paced than the sprint, slide, jump, mount, climb, jump-prone, lean style of CoD, which is fluid and twitchy.

There is no lean, confirmed, likely no prone. Sprinting might be a thing but how does that work on low g?

I think it'll be measured and more tactical. Damage models look good (no bullet sponges by the looks of it but we'll see). So combat might be punchy and I hope it is. Just don't expect Quake 3 Arena...

(though we're getting an FPS version of CQC so who knows how that will play?)

Actually I hate the combat in this game. I find it to be lame, dull and plain boring. For me the "parking ticket mindset" of the AI isn't exactly helping either. 1 accidentel friendly fire hit in the heat of the fight, immediately turn "allies" against me. Getting fined for venturing 1 cm into the no firing zone while defending myself yields a fine. F that. I sincerely hope Odyssee will bring more to the table than lame pewpew-ing. I don't feel like getting executed because my jetpack accidentally scrapes of some paint from a station in danger when I take cover.
I.o.w. I gladly leave the fighting to the people who like that. I'll deliver the weapons.

I’ll try the combat, to see how it plays. I especially want to try ‘no-ship’ legs combat to see what this mythical ‘dropship assault’ looks like, even if it’s just an on-rails taxi to the ground CZ or whatever.

But mostly I just want to vanity cam my new legs in pretty space settings and social hubs, and I’m stupid enough to pay for that privilege.

Something I noticed in the dev diary the AI seems to be quite 'immobile'.

From the limited clips we saw the AI (I'm assuming it is AI although it's possible it's other players) just stands in the open getting shot. I didn't see the AI take cover or try to avoid incoming fire. I'm hoping it's just set up to demonstrate the weapons rather than the AI.

I know the AI in ED can be made to be very dangerous but was toned down to cater for the average player. It's logical that the soldier AI could be the same though that does require slightly different parameters like pathing and recognising what is and isn't cover etc...

On another note, something the dev said was Odyssey and ground combat could be where small ships will shine...it does seem like they will be preferable for surface combat and I'm looking forward to their new role. All dumbfire missile builds, frags, PAs...should be interesting.

I have to admit... my Chieftain is looking very good for this... highly maneuverable, tankie and already set up with frags

I love FPS games....Bring this to ED will be a win win for me too BUT some players dont like it at all.

Hope there´s more things to do while off combat...Exploration, prospecting, salvageable missions or mats to collect and so on.
