HP Reverb G2 impressions in Elite Dangerous

Yep, I was surprised that the 1080 gave me the clarity that I got. It's pretty good in MSFS2020 too! Really surprised. Maybe my eyesight is too forgiving.

I intend to upgrade when I can, but the cards are just not available at the moment. Probably a 3080, but maybe a 3070 as my PC isn't that new and there are likely other bottlenecks, and either will be a pretty big step up from the 1080.

I did this registry mod and his other tips and i'm now almost running everything in Ultra with less reprojection ratio and fewer droped frames wile turning up my graphics settings. I just recently got a 3080 and was having some issues. I also caught my monitor getting changed by windows/wmr to 60hz from its native 144hz and this also gave me issues with the G2 set at 90hz.

I try to integrate all this "Hacks" into my WMR TrayTool. The Main Idea to write it was that annoying behavior of WMR Portal to start when you do not want it, even a simple switch Monitor back on result in start WMR Portal. I fixed that with this Tool:

https://baltools.de/WMR_TrayTool_V0.3_Beta.zip (needs Admin rights to start/stop the headset).

Good program! It would be nice to add an additional SteamVR launch to it.
To do this, it will be enough to initialize OpenVR

// Example code
#include "openvr.h"
{
long overlayHandle = 0;
EVRInitError eError = EVRInitError.None;

OpenVRInterop.GetGenericInterface(OpenVR.IVROverlay_Version, ref eError);
CVRSystem system =
OpenVR.Init(ref eError, EVRApplicationType.VRApplication_Overlay);
}

And make WinY change to an arbitrary button.

Hello. Been a while since I played Elite and everything has changed. Took me ages just to sign in to comment here.
I have a question. I used to run this briefly on the Rift S, which worked fine.

Now I have the G2, after getting rid of the Rift S, but I can't get Elite to run in VR mode. The version I have of Elite is not the Steam version.
How do I get this game to see and run with my G2?
Thanks in advance.

Update edit:
It's ok, figured it out. I'm in the cockpit and niiiice.

You need to install WMR for steam from the steam store. Then launch steam VR before launching Elite dangerous from the standalone Elite launcher.

I’m will be conducting an expensive experiment tomorrow and will post if it works. I am getting sucky frame times with my set up which is particularly hampering my efforts to get a reasonable experience in MSFS 2020 with my G2 and RTX 3090.

It’s not limited to MSFS but in that I’m always limited by the main thread or render thread when the CPU doesn’t show any signs of that. Having looked at performance others are getting my theory is that my RAM speed has a bigger impact on VR than normal gaming. So as not to make it a complete waste of money I’ve bought RAM I can use to upgrade to a Ryzen 5900X and am going from 3000 to 3600.

If it doesn’t make any difference, which is quite likely I shall have proper sulk but I’m going to take this one for the VR team! 😬🤞

Hope it works out for you...

Just in case you haven't seen this, take a look at this thread from the MSFS forums, it has some pretty useful info in it. And from what I understand you want to be on old drivers with the 30 series cards. (Apologies if you already know all of this.)

I'm still on an old 1080, so I'm far from getting great graphics (have ordered a new PC which will give me a huge boost), but even so I am getting pretty smooth performance despite what I imagine are atrocious frame rates, probably only in the teens, certainly no issues flying for hours at a time. Likewise in Elite, while my fps is typically only around 45, I'm getting pretty smooth and very sharp performance, a few stutters opening menus in the station, but flying and fighting, even on planets seems really good to me.

As I've said before, I may not be setting myself the highest expectations, but I'm having an absolute blast playing both ED and MSFS in VR on the G2, a huge improvement on my old Rift. :)

Thanks for the link I’ll take a look. I’d heard of people rolling back drivers but not looked into properly because I’ve been having similar issues with x plane since before I even got a 3090. It’s certainly worth a try though.

I’ve managed to get MSFS playable but not running as well as others on similar hardware.

Definitely worth a look. I followed some of the suggestions and even with my underpowered setup felt there was a definite improvement in the smoothness of the VR experience and that was despite actually increasing some of the graphics settings in the sim. When I get my new PC (3080), I'll be going through it again, although hopefully Nvidia will have sorted out the driver issues by then.

Gone through it all and rolled back the drivers. Will have a little play tonight and see how I get on. I’m very interested to see how disabling motion smoothing pans out. I won’t fly anything with propellers because the motion smoothing is so terrible. Which is odd because the implementation in steam VR is fantastic. I find Elite looks far better in the G2 when reprojection kicks in than ASW on my Rift S.

OMG!! Thank you so much for that link. I’d done about half of it already but combined what a difference! I’m gone from 25 -29 FPS to 35 - 40 FPS in my test scenario and finally my GPU is going to 100% and not being throttled by main thread. Also the propeller isn’t a wobbly mess. 👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁

No I’ve got to decide if I want to send that RAM straight back when it comes tomorrow lol

I’ve just played Elite and it’s miles better than before. I expect nearly all the improvements in MSFS are because of rolling back the driver.

Elite on the 3090 was unplayable with the steamVR render resolution set to auto. It’s now running better in auto than at 80% baring in mind that the default is 150%.

Nvidia should be ashamed of themselves having released multiple drivers that mess up VR that much for 30xx cards apart from the launch driver.

I installed SteamVR from Steam store and installed Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR also from Steam store.
Before that, the helmet and controllers were configured in Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality.

I start the computer. Then start SteamVR and Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR.
In the game, in the graphics settings, everything is configured as for the helmet. But when I start the game Elite - starts Windows Mixed Reality Portal from Microsoft (game space type room and view from the window and etc.). But the Elite game is not displayed in the helmet. It starts and works separately in 3D mode on the monitor screen. Although the sound of the game can be heard in the headphones of the helmet.
I tried disabling the Portal with the utility that is laid out in this topic above - but then the helmet detection is disabled in SteamVR as well. Without running Windows Mixed Reality from Microsoft - the helmet is not detected at all in SteamVR.

So - my question is:
How do I get a game Elite Dangerous (that I bought a long time ago but not through Steam) to run in the HP Reverb G2 helmet?

Everything started to run normally after changing the program start sequence.
1. First, I launch the Windows Mixed Reality Portal from Microsoft. I turn it into a tray.
2. I start SteamVR and also turn it into a tray.
3. I start the game with pre-set settings for the VR helmet.
Everything started running normally. However, sometimes the image in the helmet disappears for a few seconds (black screen), but the game works and the sound of the game in the helmet headphones continues.
This happens rarely – about once every half hour.

I was going to say you also need 3D set to HMD [headphones] in elite but looks like you have that sorted.

The screens going black is a bug with the G2 related to the volume being too high (ridiculous as that seems). Make sure the volume is 95% or less.

Also once you have everything setup you only need to launch steamVR before elite and everything else will run automatically

I haven't seen this mentioned, but with my Reverb G1 I have to add Elite to NoInterEyeRotation list for it to look correct.
Is this still same with G2? I would think so since it is also a WMR device.

In MixedRealityVRDrivers default.vrsettings file add Elite:

Code:
"NoInterEyeRotation" : {
        "battlezone_dx11.exe" : true,
        "battlezone_dx12.exe" : true,
        "DOOMVFRx64.exe" : true,
        "Fallout4VR.exe" : true,
        "EliteDangerous64.exe" : true,
        "EliteDangerous_Executable.exe" : true,
        "EliteDangerousExecutable.exe" : true
    }

I haven’t noticed any rendering issues without this setting added. Let me know the particular visual issue this setting corrected for you, and I’ll keep an eye out for it and post any findings in this thread.
