HP Reverb G2 impressions in Elite Dangerous

Just fired up elite briefly (no time to play properly) to test out my reverb G2 mod. (Removing the faceplate and replacing with velcro and an odyssey VR cover. It really is impressive both how good it is and how comfy it is now.... And mind boggling how much FOV is wasted in the supplied faceplate. Very very pleased with it now. Initially FOV was on a par with quest 2. Now it is noticably larger.
I have 1000s of hrs in EDVR using a DK2 and CV1 and maybe 20hrs.combined using quest 2 and ReverbG2 using stock faceplate and......

With the mod and the increased FOV I instantly notice increased presence and appreciation of the scale. I love it and it kills.me that I just don't have the time to play. So many toys and no time to use them and Back to work tomorrow :(

Btw I have an MSI 570 tomahawk on latest beta bios (16/11 iirc) and it didn't detect my G2 using the usb a-c adapter but does seem to work ok (albeit not tried it that much) in the usb c

When... If... you do get the time. And you can access an AspX.
Will you do an Elite Dangerous FoV test, using the G2 mod for me please?

If you don't mind doing it:
  1. Hop into an Asp Explorer,
  2. Reset view,
  3. Try to center the view so you can see as much of those two vertical side lights as possible,
  4. Make a mental note of how much (if any) of those two lights you can see.
I appreciate people faces are different but your face is the same!

With my faceshape, I have found the following:
  • Quest 2 - about half, maybe a smidge more, of each light
  • CV1 - slither of each
  • Rift S - just the glow of the each light (presumably fresnel glare)
  • Quest 2 (with 5mm gasket extender for glasses) - as Rift S, slightly dimmer glow.
Thanks!

I am having a go on elite today as it happens. Do any of the training missions have an asp? If not I will see if I can access one . With a bit of luck mine is only a few jumps away ..... I will just finish my Weetabix and have a go (I have a few hrs of work free child free time - 1st time really since before Xmas)

So I'v been playing with the Reverb G2 for something like 2 weeks.
My graphic card is a 1060. I'm still waiting to get a 3060ti, 3070 or 3080.
To my surprise, I've put the resolution at around 100% (something like 2188x2160 I think), with the game at medium settings and while it's not always smooth, it's very playable, and really waaaay better in terms of quality compared to the Vive I had a year ago. I had some crashes at the beginning but since I disabled virtual monitor pre-allocation I have a smoother experience and 0 crashes.
At first I thought I HAD to get a 3080. Seeing how playable the game is with my 1060, I'm now thinking that a 3060 ti will be plenty powerful enough.

Ok so that is a good test.
With the default gasket. Can't see the lights at all . Not even close. Which shows how bad it is if you have s big head.....
With the vr cover.... And it fit properly... Can see both lights fully but that is literally as far as the FOV goes.
I would be interested to see what the results are of this with an index

Yeah!
You are probably 100% in frame reprojection territory, but, so what??
The entire point of this ASW (or whatever it is called) is that it should look OK!
In fact, if you don't mind ASW, you can even increase graphics settings. As long as you don't allow the frames to go below 45. :)

Brilliant!
Thank you very much for doing that. :)
I know headshapes differ but I think that defo puts the G2 up there, when compared to the 'standard' FoV headsets.
Nice!

How would you rate confort? Does the VR Cover have nay drawbacks in the long term? I'm hesitating to do this mod.

For me it's a no brainer. More comfy bigger FOV. Only downside for me is there is light at the nose. But this is easily fixable. To be honest I missed being able to peak out at my keyboard so I am going to keep it as it is. It's no worse than my rift cv 1 so even that is a positive. Only negative then is it's another £30 (or mine was) but it's money well spent. Also the standard gasket still fits on just fine. Just don't cover the magnet /mounting holes with velcro.
But that is just me. Other headshapes may differ.

I just came out of a 3 hr session. I did get some audio cutouts which I assume is related to the known issue and I hope will be fixed with driver update.

I did this registry mod and his other tips and i'm now almost running everything in Ultra with less reprojection ratio and fewer droped frames wile turning up my graphics settings. I just recently got a 3080 and was having some issues. I also caught my monitor getting changed by windows/wmr to 60hz from its native 144hz and this also gave me issues with the G2 set at 90hz.

Thanks for this. I created the recommended DWORD and set it to 0, and the performance boost is staggering. I've bumped up some Graphics settings, and am getting ever such smooth play. I'm not sure how many people know about this; I didn't after nearly three years using WMR (Lenovo Explorer). Perhaps create a thread about this?

Cheers.

Steam VR is crashing randomly. It puts me back in WMR and Elite keeps running on the background. Often when I interact with the Reverb G2 controllers, but sometimes it's completely random. Logs are not very useful...
With Serious Sam I never have this problem.
I tried reinstalling steam vr, deleting all old vive drivers and programs but that didn't work.
I'm now trying to reinstall elite dangerous.

I've tested the 3070, 3080 and 3090.
Here's my opinion, if your thinking about the 3070 for a upgrade i would get a 2080TI instead, the extra mem will help. I used up almost all 8g of the 3070 most all settings were on the low to have any kind of performance. The 3080 is a good card the extra mem helps, i would fill about 10g of mem and most settings on ultra.
If you want the best experiance 4320x2160 ULTRA settings your going to want the 3090 and then you better have a good cpu to go with it, i am on a 8700k running 5.2ghz and i'm getting 85fps (cpu)
And even the 3090 has its limitations I lag when AXI combat at the very beginning with the lightning or large swarms

Meanwhile I have tested the AMD Radeon RX 6800 (non-XT) and the RX 6900 XT with the G2. I'm nowhere near any inhabited systems, but I tried planetary landings in 6K downsampled to 4.3K and at near-native resolution of the G2, as I seemingly can't set the exact resolution in SteamVR, it's always a few pixels off.

In essence, the RX 6800 cannot drive the 6K res, and while 4.3K mostly works, there are some stutters here and there when on planetary surfaces. Unfortunately - as said - I can't test space stations or combat situations.

The RX 6900 XT had no issues whatsoever with 4.3K in my tests, but 6K is pushing the card to its limits. Some slight stuttering can be seen sometimes, still much better than the smaller card though. I'm thinking I'll probably go for 5K or something, keeping the 6900 XT.

I'm playing with 4K textures and I've seen VRAM use of up to 7.8GiB (Edit: In 6K). Processor is a Ryzen 5 3600X at stock settings, soon to be upgraded to a 5600X. All ingame settings at maximum. Downscaling was done via SteamVR, not the ingame render scale.

Ah right, the card's power targets where set to +15% in both cases with no other tweaks applied.

Just a quick note to say I had to return my G2 to HP yesterday for a refund due to numerous issues, some of which HP couldn't fix. That's not to say it's a bad headset. There's a lot to like, but some issues may be deal breakers for some. I fully intend to write up a detailed account here when I have more time.
