I was wrong about FDL. Of a samurai who resisted using a katana and fought with a kanabo mace instead.

FDL this, that, best combat ship, FDl and nothing else - that praise about FDL in every discussion forum was one thing. Those muppet gangs in FDLs were other thing, diverting my anger from them to the ship, in my head FDL was a personification of a muppet ganger. I even built me a MINER FDL to humiliate this ship even more. I resisted FDL to the point where I became a hardcore Mambist even I hated Mamba's terrible pitch rates - sweet lemons rationalization.
But not so long ago I decided to remove that mining junk and geared the FDL into fully engineered combat ship with prismo shield, force shell cannons and plasmas with same projectile velocity paired on one trigger. I wont start praising FDL as a zealous neophyte, instead I'll humbly put my newest ship into work in space battlefields.
And this is how I felt after leaving Palin workshop, he is always a last stop when I work on a ship. Everything turned out to be well balanced and deadly.

This read like I wrote it, up until to the point you built one you fell in love with!

I believe twice now I've given it an honest attempt, and it is still one of the last ships I'd pick for combat. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I hate its flight model. Maybe it's time for another go!

I haven't mentioned off-centered seat and the infamous strut :D I spent many hours flying Adder so I got used to these quirks, but I think the most meh factor may be stalling and losing momentum during turns. I'm able to control it during slower paced res fights and using drift as an advantage, but in pvp engagements during recent CG's I was losing my head due to aggressive handling I have from FAS and I stalled with every turn, FDL is a different animal and it will take time to master the combat flight.

I am another who has tried and tried with the FDL and I simply don't get it. Perhaps because so many of my PvP fights turn into jousts, no matter my efforts to circle and orbit. But I've found in my Mamba I do passably well. As a joust ship with huge beam and frags (Meta Mamba build?) the Mamba doesn't need too much pip management nor really snazzy flying to be a tough nut to crack.

I love my Gunship and enjoy my Krait. But my FDL? I just don't get it!

Fair play OP, fly dangerous!

I just fly the Mamba with 1 pip in shields.

Two large Gimballed beams and a gimballed muticannon with two shortrange railguns.

The real killer though is NPCs seem to ram into the front mandibles more than any other ship for some reason. And its not anything Im doing, they will do with while Im not even moving.

It has a dead drift spot but engineered and flown right it's a beast. I use it for my fun kill platform when my murder wagon vette is in the shop. With the right paint job and decals, it's become my 1st choice for picking fights in PvE. Before I learned how to properly FA/off with it and outfit it properly, I probably bought and sold it half a dozen times.

Don't own a FDL and have thought about getting one to try out, but all the builds I have seen so far have crappy jump range and no fuel scoop, relying on ship transfer service or FC to transport it to different star systems. I hate that. I like all my ships to have a fuel scoop to be self-sufficient when travelling around the Bubble. Any other build suggestions?

I can never get past the asymmetric pilot chair ...so I do not fly my FDL, or Python or Cobra, or any of the other ships with asymetric placement of the pilot chair

Probably only fussed over asymmetry if you want the best aiming in a combat ship, in other ships it's not a big deal.

I hope if you drive a car, your driver seat is in the centre line, not sitting on left or right side (depending on your country)

I used this for a while, but don't really need it with the carrier being my main mode of jumping larger distances. Being in Colonia I still have a size 1 or 2 scoop for emergencies on most of my FdLs. It's the ship with the best flight model and I use it most of the time.

I've never liked the FDL and Mamba until I got my fleet carrier. Now I can quickly put them in any system in the bubble quickly. Makes a big difference.
I've been using my Corvette more lately for the same reason.

Thanks, however with that Prismatic shield, I don't suppose it is built to fight in a CZ or taking on successive elite NPC Anaconda pirates who are interdicting you right? That shield takes ages to regenerate.
