Looking for some sort of base or city building game - slow placed, relaxing

My wife is a huge Tropico fan. But she says Tropico 6 is not as good as 4 and 5 have been. There is no story in Part 6, you just play island after island, whilst there where story campaigns in the prior parts. I played Tropico 4 and yes, I have El Presidente in good memory, it's quite humorous too.

To be honest, i'm quite fine without a story.

I'm a big fan of Kingdoms and Castles.

Simple relaxing fun, cute looks and some funny touches. It's still in development but is already a great little game with more to come.

True Tropico 6 has no campaign, only sandbox/free mode and missions. But I always preferred the sandbox mode anyway, pick a big map and set up for a whole day of island developing. :)

Tropico 6 is the most polished of the series, it also features for the first time small arquipelagos instead of individual islands, and has noteworthy AI improvements, especially concerning the transportation of goods between your production buildings and how workers reach their job locations. Tourism is now finally a valid way to make money in the game, especially later on.

Must admit, Tropico is the one i'm leaning most towards. I do like humorous games as well.

I've looked into the Anno series more and it looks good, but i just can't bring myself to install uPlay, not even for something i might enjoy. So many negative reviews from people about their experiences with uPlay, and while some of them are clearly idiots, it overall reinforces my view of Ubisoft and their launcher.

Despite the light-hearted tone, it's also quite deep and rich in features, you have to juggle economy and politics, production and diplomacy, some features you might not even realize you can use them until after quite some time playing, and they allow for some quite out-of-the-box approaches to the game. Enormous replay potential, as you can play on the very same map lots of times, each focusing on a completely different strategy, and it will always feel fresh.

Probably my favorite city builder / economic sim of all time.

I've been running uplay for years with no trouble. It's no more obtrusive than Steam.

To be honest, i'd rather not have Steam, but too many games i've got on there now. I really don't like all these stores and launchers. On the up side though, you can at least get games from a wide range of developers on Steam and its a good platform for small development studios to launch their games on. Unlike launchers like uplay and origin which are purely launchers for specific publishers. They do nothing but get in the way of the game itself.

Vote 2 for Conan Exiles. Limitless construction, can play solo, pve, pve-conflict (pvp during certain hours), or full on pvp. At 4k it is a very pretty gritty game. Hidden lore and loot to discover, combat is fairly easy to manage, pets, mounts, companions, etc.

Well, technically they also function as gateways to games you can't get anywhere else;)

Is Conan Exiles the one with the ding dong slider?

Rimworld is one of the best imho. Head and shoulders above everything else apart from possibly Dwarf Fortress which inspired it, and even then, I'd argue that Rimworld's graphics, UI, and just-enough systems simplifications possibly make it the better game in many ways. Plus there's a giant mod scene to it taking it even further. Not on the relaxed side though, and involved a fair amount of micromanagement so maybe not your thing.

For the chill/relax experience, my goto in the builder genre these days is Aven Colony. It's absolutely splendid, and is on the by-the-book easy side of the spectrum.

I just picked up "Oxygen Not Included" and I am allready loving it! Thanks @Navigare, good hint. The animations of the "Dupes" are really sweet, I could watch them for hours, just doing theire thing.

Unlike in RimWorld, I have an immediate relation to those littel guys and theire personalities. It's great I don't have to manage each of them individually, but can guide them as a group more easyly.

It's just a lovely design! Now enough, I need to install more toilets, and clean up the mess Abe made - again ; )

Oh, and if you're into retro gaming, there's always this lovely oldie: Utopia: The Creation of a Nation.

Sadly it's not available on GOG, so you'll likely have to pick it up from abandonware sites. It's lovely looking (imho), relatively relaxed, and has a neat spying system which progressively clues you in on the indigenous species, their biology, their society, their customs... They are off map so you never see their place, but they inevitably end up hostile so you will see their military units when they come and visit.

I am yet to find a modern space colony building game that I enjoy as much as I enjoyed Utopia back in the 90's. Not only it had a great resource management / trading layer, as well as research etc, but it also had mistery, and loved the little details like ship units actually spending fuel while airborne, meaning that not only we had to find and extract fuel deposits, but also make responsible use of fuel.

If you’re looking for a fun, slow paced base building game, I can’t recommend Surviving Mars enough. Not only is the game fun, with decent depth, but it’s as slow paced, or intense, as you want it to be, based on where you set up your colony. Plus the game has about half a dozen “radio channels” which, while fairly short (I think they start repeating themselves after an hour), have decent music and some rather quirky personalities.

Suggestions?

Not something with too much micromanagement like Cities Skylines or Cities in Motion.

Ideally Medieval or Fantasty setting, although modern or sci-fi might be ok.

Maybe something Settlers like. Or maybe more focused on bases than cities, like Ark.

First person, third person, top down, all options.

Try Frostpunk!

Oh yes it is. You can also make and drink a potion of "endowment" to temporarily be more "manly".

It is possible to turn off nudity settings.

I have only encountered one player after a few thousand hours that insisted on playing in the buff. Quite a character. He did sport warpaint though.

Try Fallout 4. That has a bit of everything you need with the settlement building system, also includes a campaign if you get bored of the settlement management.
