New aircraft cant jump out of system - cant upgrade FSD, stuck!!

Hi, having done trading for a while, I eventually saved up for a Python. I bought it at Ross 842 and it came with a 5E FSD with around 8ly range, but the station I bought the ship from (Vela Dock) did not sell any better FSDs. I found I could only reach one nearby star (Long Mu) and go no further! I was stuck! There was nowhere within range to get a better FSD.

I stripped out EVERYTHING from the ship but still couldn't jump to another star to upgrade the FSD!!

Eventually I went back to Vela Dock, bought a small Hauler, upgraded to a 2A FSD (which gave a 25 ly range), flew to a major station (Trinar, McClintock Terminal) then got the Python delivered (ship transfer) to that station!! Makes me wonder how the NPC delivery team got it there with a 5E FSD with less than a 8ly range!!

Surely there is a better solution within the game, i.e. the ability to buy a FSD (or other kit) remotely and get it shipped to the system you are currently in (with appropriate wait time and costs as is done with ship transfer). Or, don't sell ships that cant go anywhere!!

Am I missing something?

p.s. I used a lot of exclamation marks in this post but that is how gobsmacked I am on this issue, on an otherwise excellent game!!!

Yep, this is probably the one, single, aspect of the game that is pretty unforgiving.

Back when I was a noob (before ship transfer was a thing), I went to Fehu in some ship, flogged it and bought a Viper 4 (the "best" ship available from any station in Fehu) and then realised that it couldn't actually jump out of Fehu again and there were no upgraded FSDs for sale anywhere in Fehu.
Went back to the stations and found that none of the ships for sale in Fehu were actually capable of leaving the system or could be refitted in a way that'd allow them to leave.
At the time, Fehu was the place to go to farm Imp' rank so I stayed for 4 days, ranked up to King then suicided out of there so I could go and buy my Cutter.

If you have an elite rank, Jameson Memorial is the one-stop shop. If not, look for a station on EDDB that sells your wanted ship as well as the most important modules - preferably in LYR space.

Just buy a 5A FSD somewhere else then transfer it to the python station - alternatively you can downsize everything else as much as possible (powerplant 3D, etc)

Sadly couldn't buy one somewhere else as I couldn't get anywhere else (till I bought the small Hauler then did ship transfer). Or can you book on a flight as a passenger and get a lift elsewhere? Haven't done that yet

Thanks all. As many of you have said, I did find a solution but I now have many other solutions in future (although quite a few need 'stuff' to be prepared in advance)

As I read all your collective excellent advice I note the following ways to get out of this predicament:

Buy a small long range ship (as I did), fly somewhere which sells decent modules then ship transfer the ship which is stuck
Inject various materials (Niobium etc) into FSD for super jump.
Buy FSDs in advance and module transfer them to you
Get a lift from a friendly fleet carrier
Downgrade all your modules which will then reduce weight and give longer range jump
Check in advance that the station sells the right kit!
Remote engineering (really need to read more on this topic)
Get a trip as a passenger (soon...)

Right, time to get exploring :)

Notwithstanding all the above, I still think we should have the ability to order modules for delivery to a different system (even if it takes a while in game time and they charge you lots for the delivery / premium prices). They could even make that part of the game, delivering modules to people (real and NPCs).

Just a minor point in an otherwise great game

Looking forward to ED Odyssey...

Now I pretty much go straight to an A drive as soon as I buy the ship, but of course you need to have the spare credits to be able to do that.
I bought a 'cheap' T-10 for my Epic account, equipped it with a 7A FSD and discovered I was flying a delivery mission (unshielded !) with only 950 credits left last night ! Fortunately, the ship is still good at beating interdictions.

According to EDDB Vela Dock in Ross 842 sells every FSD up to 7C, but completely skips sizes 4, 5 and 6 FSD, rather strange. You can get it up to 12ly with a 5E though, you couldn't get out with that range?

Another solution is to buy your ships at high tech stations which usually have a decent supply of most modules.

Once you unlock the system Shinrarta Dezhra and Jameson Memorial station you can get every ship and every module there and a discount on ships.... to gain access to that system you need to unlock Elite rank in one area...combat, trade or exploration.

The game gave you a problem and you solved it, lesson learned.
The Game Sim's harsh to make the rewards more valuable. Easy isn't what they were going for, challenge and discovery is.

I have a lightened E size FSD in my 15M vulture. It's a local killer, if I need the one with the juice I just transfer it to where I am.

If you're desperate commander I could come and pick you up in my fleet carrier and deposit you somewhere within 500 ly :)
this offers way too much content and gameplay to be viable. Just imagine your first experience with the Sidey, you're trying to get out of the system and someone drops in with a carrier and hauls you off to a permit locked system (is that even possible?)

Carrier cannot enter permit locked systems as far as I know.
