Yup. You guessed it. We Want Cross play.

I'd just like some bug fixes!

I've been playing on PC since the game was released (a laptop, then a second-hand desktop with a GTX 750ti). In the last couple of months I've decided my hardware is now too aged to continue for modern games - it has never been able to run Elite higher than medium/low settings comfortably...

But, I cannot foresee a time when I'll be able to afford to build a new PC, or even upgrade the one I have within my budget (or whether that is even worth it).

After being gifted a 1440p monitor by a friend at Christmas (I am so lucky), I've decided to buy an Xbox Series S to compliment it; mainly as that is the only thing remotely within a reasonable budget for me. As it stands, I know I can transfer my assets in credits to Xbox by submitting a ticket, but that is, frankly, quite a demotivating prospect; to lose my engineered modules, carrier, ships, friends - everything I acquired over the years.

Edit: I forgot to add that I am also not thrilled about the prospect of losing all my combat ranks (I possess access to the Corvette and the Cutter...) and Elite ranks (I am Elite in trade and exploration...)

If crossplay were possible (and clearly it is, based on the increasing number of other games that do it, for example Destiny 2), I'd rejoice.

You’ll regret transferring and losing all of your time invested. Credits come and go.

I think the main problem for FD with x-play is that then ties all their releases to simultaneity. And from a PC standpoint I'm not sure I want to wait for the console approval process. This is also good for console users since PC gets to be the guinea pig.

Except this is not the case at all. They have released all major feature updates on PC and Console platforms simultaneously since at least the PS4 release. Minor updates to fix platform specific bugs have been released per platform separately, of course.

There is a thread about cross play every few months. Devs are aware it is wanted.

We can only speculate as to why they can't/won't do it. Could be to do with agreements. Could be to do with time/resources. Could be to do with technical issues. Could be something else.

We don't know.

That's the problem, I think. Going back the last 2-3 years whenever they are asked about it they simply say we are aware of it, but have nothing to announce at this time. Then another year passes. The lack of clear communication feeds such cyclic threads and questions.

So we have to go on the evidence. One large factor is the fact that FDev are unwilling to commit to any enhancements for the new PS5 and XBox Series X/S consoles. They've said this both in the press, and on the AMA's on this site. This I think demonstrates an apathy for Elite on consoles generally. So rather than some technical reason behind it, I think it's a simple case of they don't want to expend the effort. Elite is and always will be primarily a PC game. Sales of the game on console are a bonus. A nice to have.

Sony and Microsoft implemented backwards compatibility on PS5/XBox Series X/S, and that is the only reason Elite has a presence there. As a result PS5 is artificially hobbled to 1080p, Xbox has 4K but low-res textures, and yet FDev have stated on multiple occasions that they have no plans at all for the new consoles.

So will they implement Crossplay? "NOthing to announce".

Well, in this case, if they have nothing to announce, then there is nothing to announce.

I would like more active CMs on the forums, responding to suggestions and stuff, but this might be one case where nothing is served by them repeating themselves, as within a couple of weeks there will be another thread on the same topic.

Nonsense. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Not only should we be badgering them for crossplay, we should also be fighting for cross progression. I'd like to be able to switch from PC to console on a whim and play the same account.

It is all about Sony with the PS4 and Microsoft on the Xbox going with cross play. Basic it is all about money and protecting patents. Even if this works out with all the aftermarket toys a PC player has Frontier will not go with it having a serious gaming advantages over the consoles. It is a balance thing.

I purchased a PS4 Pro because of ED hoping I could go with their Sony VR. Well that never happened.

Play on the consoles making many great friends. Never add PC players to the mix.

Regards

Ooof, that's a big ask. Cross play might be realistic, cross progression probably not.

All i want are small seismic charges, not cross play.

besides PC vs Console players would be an unbalanced mess.

dont see why PS/Xbox could not crossplay with some licensing agreements etc. other games do it successfully.

I'd like to see stable non-cross-play first. Instancing is terrible, if playing with more than a wing in size, we often have to go through bizarre hoops of swapping wings to get the game to instance us all together. And then somebody from each active wing has to be in the same place at all times to avoid it getting out of sync again. Even then ghost ships etc still exist.

I suspect in all reality, the reason that cross-play is tricky is purely down to release management. The patching and release cycles on closed platforms is constrained.

Good luck with that. Lemme know how it works out for you. Check back in a couple years.

No, seriously.

Agree. Like Destiny, for example, or NMS. For multiplayer games it's becoming quite a common place feature. It'll be odd in comparison if Odyssey doesn't introduce it.

Last I heard was Microsoft was more onboard with this, but Sony was not, so I don’t think it will happen which sucks. I believe Microsoft has some cross play with fortnight I think...not sure I don’t play that game.
