Unfair punishment

Or just be rank 5 with the Kumo. All fines and bounties are 0 and instantly forgiven once you leave :D*

Yeah true it might be at some situations better to just go through rebuy screen if it is cheap enough and missions are not that heavy fined, too much cargo lost or reputation loss too bad, than bother to fly back from detention facility or try find IF especially if at edges of bubble and detention centers ("prisons") thus far away.

I've experienced that first hand. Was shooting some NPCs in HighRES. By accident shot the cop, 7 ships turned against me right away. No chance to run away with the fire I've received. Lost the ship, got thrown 27 jumps away from "home". Cost me nearly 7 mil for making the mistake of trying combat... Never again.

Rules of gun safety:-
  1. Always treat the gun as loaded.
  2. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  3. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
  4. Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.
  5. Never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy.
  6. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
  7. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the gun you are using.
  8. Always use proper Ammunition.
  9. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading and shooting.
  10. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unload the gun.
  11. Don't rely on the gun's safety to keep it from firing.
  12. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don't trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything.

I'd like to take this opportunity to draw the OP's attention to rules 5 & 6, and suggest they apply to shooting stuff in ED too. ;)

At the risk of stating the obvious, try moving so there's nothing friendly directly behind what you're shooting at.
Problem solved! (y)

Starbuck was a military pilot working for Galactica, the OP is just a private person interfering in a police action! People employed for the express purpose of keeping the law or fighting usually get exemptions for certain types of accidents in the heat of battle. There's one thing I can guarantee, if you turned up in your private ship and shot the Galactica Starbuck would be chasing you down and blowing you to scrap!

But be that as it may, when discussing death penalty for what seem minor infractions for pad loitering people disregard a few things, one is that you are flying a spaceship with a reactor powerful enough to propel your ship through interstellar space, loitering over a pad and causing a collision could potentially kill thousands of civilians, they don't model that in the game because that's a bit difficult, but consider it the same as unnecesarily landing a 757 on a busy highway just because you could.
I think you're taking my analogy too seriously. :)

Except in certain states of the US. :D :D

Perhaps we could make a CG of getting to 'visit' every correctional institute in the game:

I helped Sagan class tourist ship from a pirate attack. I shot down pirates worth of 1,4 Mililion credits. In the fighting I managed to hit the tourist ship by mistake few times gaining a bonunty on 200 credits. Later I messed things up with silent running (I didn't find the button to turn it of as I never use it) and I crashed on a nearby planet. Instead of being treated like a local hero for wiping out scores of pirates I get put in prison for a debt on 200 credits. What kind of logic is that? Frontier need to fix this and fast.

Aside from the obvious quote "No good deed goes unpunished..." ;) This is the world of ED, which funnily enough, totally mirrors the unfair world we live in too! Suck it up Friend! Suck It Up!

Unless your a noob, you received a fine when you committed the crime of "Friendly Fire". And chose not to deal with it, until you got caught.
It's also against the law to drive without a licenses, but a fine and or other punishment only takes place, if and when one actually gets caught.
In either case, committing the crime will only get you a fine and or cause you to do time, is if and when your caught.
You obliviously knew of your crime and fine and deliberately chose not to take the time and go to a Interstellar Factor and deal with it. Hence your choice, man up and learn from your lesson.

Not a lot of sympathy for OP in this thread. I hope this helps: ED is a game, not real life. It has rules, like in football if you pick the ball up and run with it, you get sent off, so you have to follow the rules whatever they are or whether you agree with them or not. You'll never get any sympathy on this forum if you break the rules then complain about the punishment.

Here's what you should have done to follow the rules:
1. As soon as you get the red /orange writing telling you that you've been charged with assault, boost away and get into supercruise.
2. Use your galaxy map to find the nearest low security system wuth a station or outpost that you can land at.
3. Go there and find the Interstellar factor under contacts.
4. Pay off your bounty
5. All is forgiven and you can carry on as if nothing happened.

Things you shouldn't do:
1. Hang around to shoot more ships.
2. Go to the local station or planetary base.
3. Go anywhere where the police might be.
4. Shoot any ship that interdicts you on the way to the IF.
5 Anything that might get you killed while you have the bounty on you.

There's no need to get blown up, no need to hand yourself in and no need to end up on the prison ship. That's all down to you not following the rules.

That is all fine and cool but we both know that NPCs have a nasty feature of flying into the line of fire way too often...

When they do that, take your finger off the trigger.

Seriously, this thread...I've been playing since 2015 and I think I've been fined for hitting clean NPC's maybe TWICE, for a grand total of 800 credits or something. It's so easy not to hit NPC ships, and the consequences are so low when you do....we're really stretching for things to complain about now.

This is actually very simple. Increase the fine - 200 credits is laughable. And either pay the fine (assuming you did not kill anyone) to clear your account or go to jail if you can't afford the fine. Jail will be mandatory if you kill a clean pilot... Simple as that. Punishing player TWICE is not a right thing to do.

Also this:

I explained this already, fines aren't replacement for prison, they never have been, if a crime attracts a prison term then that's what you get, and you may also get a fine, this is the way it works in the real world. I forget where I read it but it goes like this, "to rich people, fines are what you pay to do illegal things."

While I sympathize with the OP's plight (having been there myself at least once) - I gave up long ago expecting "sensibility" from the C&P system in this game, lol. As a previous poster noted, this is a game where loitering is punishable by death.
