So, opinions on whether or not Odyssey is going to bump up the system requirements?

Well, this current system that will be going to my friend has a 1st gen i7 in it and some pretty old hard drives so I am a bit worried about it being able to handle the new expansion. As I said in a previous post, it does tend to bog down in areas where there are a lot of ships flying about shooting at each other. Not sure whether it's the hardware or the internet connection though. I am just hoping my friend will be happy with it. Oh, and I do apologize. I didn't actually mean to be sarcastic. I really did think that Frontier would have at least some sort of NDA attached to their alpha test. I am very surprised and pleased to find out from Zieman that Frontier does these things differently than other companies.
My laptop, despite being 'high-end' for its generation (I7 @4GHz & 1070 8GB) will slow down in particularly busy (normally stations) scenes where my PC will just drop a frame or 2...

I misinterpreted your response and will modify my reply - with an apology to yourself!

The current console delay is probably because they are struggling to get it to run on the archaic hardware. Will it run on the hardware listed, probably. Would you want to play it that way, probably not.

Since none of us have it yet, I suppose nobody knows for sure whether or not Odyssey is going to push our systems a bit, but does anyone have any educated guesses as to whether or not it will? My current system tends to bog down in areas where there is intensive combat going on. Not sure if it is due to my computer or my connection. I have a new rig that has been built and hopefully will be able to reduce some of these problems but I am just wondering if Odyssey is the beast that would have broken my current rig.

I believe that FD have stated their intention is not to do so - however, they obviously want to make Odyssey as good as it can be, so I expect it will come down to a balancing act where they try not to push the system requirements past what ED needs, but who knows in the advancement of the Odyssey mode what will be needed?

With PC, one thing they can do is try to keep to similar requirements to ED, but allow those with monster rigs to also benefit from having a better machine - possibly. :)

Guess the best thing we can do is have fun with the speculation, but also be patient and wait for the facts. <O

I believe Frontier has announced no new changes to their engine, other than adding new code, which would not increase your graphical requirements.

Well, if they don’t, I imagine Odyssey looking like this on the minimum spec machines to maintain a playable frame rate 😛

Well, the old beast is now about to be retired. The new one has a ROG STRIX Z490-E motherboard, a 10th Gen i9 CPU, two Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB SSDs, one 8 TB regular HD, 64 GB of Trident Z DDR4 Ram, a ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3090 video card, a ROG Thor Platinum 1200 W power supply, a ROG STRIX Scope RX keyboard, a ROG CHAKRAM mouse, a Fractal Celsius+ S36 Prisma water cooling system and a Fractal Define S2 Vision RGB case. This new one should probably do the trick for a few years. ;)

All that money spent and all you could come up with was a 290 quid MB.

Sad.

Well, as long as it can keep me going for the next few years, I'll be happy. It's certainly an upgrade from the old machine that I had. ASUS has never done me wrong. Why would you be sad? If this machine gets the job done, why do you worry so about the money I spent?

Im sure you'll have no issues for the next 4-5 years if not more and who knows by then Intel might do something interesting in the cpu market.

Hihi...

you mean these minimal system requirements (taken from Steam, Odyssey page)

Yea a GTX470 is a less potent potato than the Jag in the last gen consoles.

FDev have clarified the experience you can expect with the minimum requirements here. With minimum specs, FDev are targeting 720P 30FPS in most situations (Note: They don't say what quality settings are selected for this target either). You could run it with that hardware on PC, but the experience isn't going to be what I would call... good.

I think console manufacturers and players have a different expectation regarding performance for games running on those platforms. Currently ED Horizons runs at 1080P and hits 30FPS or greater in most situations. If FDev had to reduce the resolution to 720P and/or strip all detail from the visuals to get the game working at 1080P 30+FPS on last gen consoles, there might be some blowback from those console players. On PC, you already know you're not going to get modern AAA game visuals and high performance with a GTX 470.

I think it's reasonable to think consoles and the bare minimum PC requirements are giving FDev some issues with being able to provide the experience they desire. I would also find it reasonable to believe FDev care more about the console experience than they do about the minimum PC experience which is why they're pushing it on PC sooner than console.

Obviously this is all speculation because it's fun to speculate :D

Well, i do play ED on XB One S and it's a decent experience. And i'm aready doing it for the last 2 years raking in more than 2500 hours.
I expect to have it running as good in Odyssey - and i'm pretty sure FD will make it happen. After all, they released JWE on Switch - so their fabled Cobra Mk4 engine is versatile enough

I'm curious about the experiences of console players, Northpin. Do you go through Steam to play your game or do you access it through Microsoft or maybe even direct with Frontier?

To play on PS4 the game is launched directly on the PS4, through Sony, in order to play multiplayer games (including ED), I pay a subscription to Sony - Xbox players would also pay Microsoft for online play.

Naturally on PC there is no online participation fee, unless one chose to play a subscription based game.

On PC I launch just using the Frontier launcher, with duplicates of the launcher with the correct switches for VR.

No, it's a separate game, purchased separately from XB Store. There is no connection to the Steam/PC version except for the galaxy we all share.
I also play on PC and for that i had to buy the game from Steam, separate account, email and stuff.

Lowest. It's always the lowest.

On XB One|S / PS4 there is a single setting - performance. Everything is fixed.
On XB One X / PS4 Pro there is an additional setting called quality - which was toned down when Carriers were launched in June 2014.

So, as expected, they don't limit the PC version, they are simply toning down the settings for consoles.
