Well I guess the first thing I would do is whine incessantly that the creator dared to make the content in the first place to the point that constructive conversation was impossible.

In retrospect reading The Pilot's comments: what appeared to be a sloppy unprofessional Original Post was intentional click bait. Not cool if he is trying to create a favorable reputation.

Of course this is intentional click bait if you must phrase it that way. Content creators make money for their efforts, been that way for years now. That's no secret, it's not some sinister plot, everyone knows that going in. You all knew that the second he posted the thread, it's not a secret. I rather support these guys by clicking a video than buying a stupid coffee mug about Limpets, but that's just me.

I feel Elite Dangerous is well served by The Pilot and those like him. I mean if you love and care about the game, what's wrong with making these videos? I am literally HERE playing this game because of YouTube videos about this game and I know I'm not alone. Getting the word out on a game can't be a bad thing in my opinion.

COULD this have been a good discussion despite that well-accepted fact? Sure, but a few people decided to play "get off my lawn" about the way the modern Internet has evolved and a few others decided to blatantly scream for attention (look at meeee, I refuse to watch!!!) and here we are: a big toxic mess.

As far as his reputation, well the Internet runs on confirmation bias more than anything. If you already like The Pilot, you're going to like him. If you decide you don't like The Pilot, there's NOTHING he can say or do that's going to change that mindset. I have no problem with him defending himself with some of the absurd hate being thrown at him for posting a video.

I am new to the game and watch a lot of streams/Youtube to help me in better understanding it. I had no opinion of The Pilot before reading this thread because I had never seen anything of his. I watched the thread video, made comment and would have left it at that - except I forgot to do the 'unwatch' thingy :p

However, The Pilot has not done himself any favours - was he right in being disappointed with some of the negative comments made? Why not, if you work to put something out there that you think is a help to the community, why wouldn't you feel disappointed if it is met by negativity!

But some of his responses, use of memes and some of his supporters that have brought nothing but toxicity itself to the thread he started, has now afforded me a front row opinion of whether I feel like him and his followers or not.

And as a new player I will not be rushing to view his output. I don't say this in a toxic way or trying to wade into the middle of the battlefield the 2 sides have set up on this thread - I merely say that for someone who looks to make content for the community - he has shown a very negative and disrespectful approach to members of that community.

It's quite telling that you haven't responded to any of my other posts where I was still trying to be polite and constructive. You seem to have a certain soft spot for the more toxic stuff, don't you?
I was actually making fun of someone (who is not involved in this thread) who obviously didn't realise he was playing in Open - after a whole year of playing. But in general, I'm making fun of a certain type of modern players. All my grouchiness comes from the fact that these players shape the nature of modern mainstream games. I guess you haven't noticed, but I'm almost 65 and telling someone of that age to "grow up" is quite ironic. And that's the most polite response you can expect from me. 🤪

How would I "notice" that you are 65? And how would I get that you were making a reference to another obscure player not even in this thread, and not me in your reply?

For someone who loves text, you don't appear to be a very good communicator.

I'm 43 myself and I have no interest in making enemies here. I didn't read every single post here and I'm sorry if I missed yours. But in my opinion, when I remove nostalgia, gaming has gotten better overall.

When I was younger I never could have imagined something like Elite Dangerous, running on a PC costing a few hundred bucks, was even remotely possible. Because it was not.

I actually listen most of my ED news while driving. I've got a 40 minute commute to work so I've got time; but reading is getting harder for me to find time to do lately.

When I feel like reading I have probably hundreds of books here at home. Yes, real ones with paper, I know I'm such a luddite :p

Do I want to read thousand-page essays about a video game like some here seem to want? Heck no.

I've been a passionate gamer since 1986, where it all started for me with a C64. And I'm by no means referring only to the development of Elite, you're certainly right about that. It's all the softened MMO crap that bugs me, because it's getting harder and harder to find a really challenging game. Unfortunately, this softening has also left its mark on ED. Over the years, there have been attempts to make the NPCs more poisonous, for example. Which was then very quickly cut back again because the mountain of tears simply became too big. I have been playing ED for 7 years and have 11,000 hours in the game. Just so you don't think I'm pulling all this out of my sleeve.

An MMO like elite is so massive there's no need to force anything on anyone. This sounds like a lack of Dev imagination, but instead you demean your fellow players for not having your same standards of what is a challenge.

There should simply be systems that contain your uber end-game mobs that give you that sufficient challenge, and a checkbox to route around those systems in the plotter for players who don't want to die to them. Problem solved?

This game would be nothing (probably shutdown) without Youtubers and other content creators, and yet 90% of this thread is just:

I would heartily recommend watching The Pilot's videos looking at the ships of the game (particularly the Cobra Mk IV!) as they are both informative and light-hearted. The remainder of his content I do not consider myself to be in a position to suggest action.

I appreciate the info, thank you.

I wasn't 'picking' a side in this thread, but merely stating that if I went looking for ED content on YouTube, I am more likely to pick someone else's review as opposed to The Pilot's, because of his interaction on this thread.

I'm certainly not going to purposely avoid his content, or bad mouth him in any way -that would be silly. It's just he wouldn't be my first choice now.

I did view the MkIV/Corvette review on your recommendation and found it was well put together - but I probably didn't get as much out of it because, in the background, I was thinking 'yeah, this is the same guy from the forum'. This is why I stated he didn't do himself any favours with his interaction on the thread (with me anyway). Maybe in future.

Thank you again. <O

I don't think @The Pilot did a ship review for the Cobra IV!.

X3 would let you salvage or claim derelict ships.

It's a nice mechanic.

Methinks the big problem would be balancing it.

Suppose I managed to claim a panther clipper. Assume that sucker is worth two billion credits. A new player could go from low born dirt munching
sidewinder pilot to a nouveau riche aristo in a couple of hours.
I love that feature in X3.
Then again, for someone starting fresh, grab the list of free ships, go and fetch and then flog for credits.

I reckon implementing abandoned ships would add some value. But there would have to be some kind of roof on what you can find. Maybe up to a T6? Great for a fresh pilot.
For bigger ships, you could only salvage some parts, maybe the FSD or a weapon, something that didn't blow up in the explosion that disabled the ship in the first place.
Then you'd have to haul it to an engineer so they could fit it to your ship. The salvaged item wouldn't have any value (100Cr) but it would have unique engineering to it, like double or even triple engineered stuff. Long range efficient beams anyone?

I didn't watch it, not interested. So, when is the new ship coming out? The last new ship was the Mamba in 2018?

On further reflection, I still don't hate the idea, but I'm not sure how you'd make it work without breaking some existing systems. Although I can see a way around some of it via a FC, it means it requires having a FC.

And if you just get to the point and type it out it would probably take less than 30 seconds. On the other hand, you'd miss out on a few cents, so there is that to consider too.
30 seconds, the usual length of time you usually have to skip at the beginning (and often at the end) of many YT videos if you want to avoid in-video promotions, pointlessly lengthy intro sequences/branding, the request to LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE and pimping channel-specific merchandise tat :p

Edit - forgot a special bugbear of mine, wasting minutes on lavishing the viewership with praise and gratitude for watching their videos ... GET TO THE POINT I JUST WANT TO SEE HOW TO DO XYZ

Like who? Nobody of note does serious ship review videos except Yamiks guy and if you can stomach listening to him for more than a few minutes at a time, god love ya lol.

Elite Astronomy guy all he does is break down the stats from the Wiki and.....that's it. The Pilot communicates the "soul" of the ship, what it's actually good at etc etc, how fun it is to fly. Unique setups etc etc. Nobody else does that.
