Odyssey gameplay worries

If it replicates Bristol Airport then I know its going to be excellent. Burger bar up top, lots of nice views :D
I originate from Bristol (someone has to!) and shamefully admit I have never visited the airport... (but when I moved out it was called Lulsgate Airport and was just a hive of scum and villainy)

Before the End Times™ I'd be through there quite a lot on my way back to my old home town to see parents. I know all the best places to wait so I get ahead of the RyanAir Apex scrum :D

No worries, I've learnt that much about Elite these last 2 1/2 years ;) It's basically the game that made the expression "close, but no cigar" into an own form of art. At the moment I only expect what I've seen, which is a first-person shooter attached to the Elite universe. That's also why I haven't pre-ordered Odyssey yet 🤷‍♂️
I'm quite looking forward to Odyssey as I've never played a first person shooter, and what better time to start than in my favourite game.
Most of all I'm just loving the fact we can land on thin atmospheric planets and can't wait for future updates to land on full atmospheric planets, then Elite would be complete for me.
Oh and an outright war between the major super powers would be good.

This, 100%. I started playing Elite because I want to fly spaceships. If I want a FPS, there are a hundred options that are a hundred times more mature and well developed than Odyssey will be. Pass. Wake me up when Fdev is interested in making a space game.

As one who's got no interest in space legs, I'm wondering if it will be a mandate thing to do. I mean where as I land at a station and just click on the menu that allows me to choose a particular mission or get paid for one just completed. From the comfort of my bridge. Why do I need to leave my ship and appear somewhere and thus taking the risk of being shot in the face by someone when rounding a corner on my way to a terminal to choose or get paid for a mission. I mean even now that Horizon's has been melded into ED as one. One isn't mandated to ever utilize the features of Horizon, if and when one chooses not to.

I believe FDev have said you can continue playing the way you do now, meaning you’re not going to be required to get out of your ship if you don’t want to. It sounds like your experience will be limited if you go that route, but it also sounds like that is your preferred play style, so it shouldn’t matter much.

It's going to be great ... and you know it.
If some folk could discard their CoD in space line of thinking and 'assume' what the 'in-game footage' and other video footage we have been shown to date are reasonably accurate, Odyssey looks like it will have plenty of 'content' for consumption...

What we have been shown to date changed my mind from 'probably not' to 'certainly', but I do seem to have less aspiration (or possibly less dislike of Frontier) for what 'could be' rather than 'will be' - perhaps that helps 🤷‍♂️

I'm making a different point. Obviously no one is forcing anyone to do anything. My point is that - ED being primarily a game about flying spaceships - I would have preferred to see those dev resources get spent on improving the core of the game, namely the part having to do with space. There are so many opportunities to take this from a good space game to a great space game...and instead they chose to make a first person shooter. We already have a million great shooters. We don't have (m)any great space games.

No one can haz my stuff, I'll still fly my space cruiser. Looking forward to the day when Fdev is interested in that again.

Maybe this has been aserwed and I miss it but...

I'm reading news, Q/A about Odyssey and I get the impression that Odyssey is mainly focused on walking and shooting over settelments PVP/PVE. Maybe lot of players will enjoy that but I'm not one of them and for sure there are lot of CMDRs like me...
So I wonder what about rest of the gameplay which is exploration? Ok... there will be new: planet textures and thin atmosphere and I can will leave mine ship to walk arount but what else? In deep space I will leave mine ship and walk kilometers doing what exactly; walk around and admire new views? :)

(in purpouse I did not mention mining because mining gameplay was updated in past; trading well sort of too)

Elite has always been primarily combat-focussed. From the very first Elite in the 80s, to the novels to ED. If combat is something that doesn't appeal to you you are missing out on a pretty central part of ED. Which is fine, to each his own, but the 'complaint' is very much like asking "what will there be to do in FIFA2022 besides kicking a ball?". Sure, many people do not like kicking a ball in a computer game, but the more sensible conclusion would be to find a game that is less focussed on kicking a ball.

In any case, there will be a few things you can point a scanner at to get credits/data for exploration, so there will be that.

Except ED is only a game about spaceships because they havent been able to do the non-spaceship parts yet. But they have been very open about wanting to do this since 2012. They said they wanted to do this for years, asked money for it and then they did it. You may not appreciate it, but you are essentially saying you wish FD would flat-out break Kickstarter promises because you personally aren't interested in it.

Guns. In space. Why would anyone have a problem with that? "Uhh ok I have a gun, now what do I do guys?"

Shoot your name into the ground, pitch a tent on an asteroid and practice your target shooting, go Rambo on a settlement with a friend. Stop expecting people to hold your hands, the galaxy is your oyster...

Gasp! My moral bankruptcy is reprehensible, I know. But yes, I am guilty of wishing FD would make stuff I care about.

No need to be dramatic about it. But your "I wish a company would stop making a product they sold to people because I want other things!" statement isn't particularly interesting or useful to anyone. I just noticed the dude in the kebab store down the street is making a chicken durum for a customer, but I dont want a chicken durum myself. Think I should spread the news far and wide about how I wish the dude would ignore his customer and make me a pizza instead?

Except they have .. with SRV's being a case in point, though before ED (FE2, Elite) I'd have believed you.

@Pat Healy .. I think one of the reasons FDev are going down to the foot scale at this stage is to force the development of granular details (which you want) while keeping the game optimisable (which I do). And if for example you wanted to get into hand repairs, on your ship in space (I don't know what you're after exactly) first you need hands .. etc.
