So are you saying Scott of the Antarctic was ganked?
I was thinking more of explorers like Hanno, Zeng He, and Magellan...who either suspected they'd encounter other people, or who didn't have good reason to expect they wouldn't. Magellan was almost ganked by his own expedition early on, and was eventually counter-ganked by some natives he tried to forcibly convert.
Scott was exploring lands that were uninhabitable, of no economic value, and were unlikely to encounter anyone.
It happens regularly when there’s a point of interest(like the North Pole),people are drawn to it and the gankers are also.
Fixed points of interest generally aren't unexplored. They're tourist destinations, not unknowns.
It should also be noted that the history of
arctic exploration is riddled with violence. The arctic is not entirely uninhabited and is also home to potentially dangerous fauna. Plenty of expeditions suffered from mutiny or attacks by natives. There was also much potential for conflict over what was presumed to be economically viable sea routes and natural resources.
Conversely the antarctic is desolate. No one expected to find anything of economically exploitable value there and the race for the south pole was largely sporting and a matter of pride.
In ED, you aren't likely to be ganked trying to reach a new 'galactic north pole', because such areas are not well trafficked. However, if you're going to Sag A*, beagle point, or any other place popular enough to have a station, tourist beacon, or collection of FCs; or traveling with a massive, publicly announced, expedition that is following a route designed so anyone can keep up and tag a long, you'd have to be a fool to not expect and prepare for trouble.
